DESCRIPTION:Classics – the study of ancient Greece and Rome\, of Latin and Greek\, and of the tremendously rich ‘afterlife’ of the ancient world in Western History and Culture – is for everyone! We want to share our enthusiasm in a new initiative addressed to teachers and pupils in Key Stages 3–5: come visit us at Cambridge and experience both Cambridge and Classics hands-on! You do not currently need to study Classical Civilization\, Ancient History\, or the ancient languages – an interest in doing so is enough! It is possible to learn \nGreek and Latin at Cambridge regardless of one’s A-level subjects. \nAn example programme for the day: \n(We can also accommodate later start and end times or half-day visits) Around 10:00:   Arrival at the Faculty \n10.00 – 10.30:    Welcome and settling in \n10.30 – 11.15:    Talk by a Cambridge academic on a Classical subject\, tailored to the age and background of the group \n11.15 – 11.30:    Break \n11.30 – 12.30:    Tour of the Museum of Classical Archaeology \n12.30 – 14:00:    Lunch in either the Faculty or one of the Colleges\, hosted \nby one of our ‘student ambassadors’\, fielding questions \nabout studying at Cambridge \n14:00 – 15:00:    Optional supervision-style class with a Cambridge academic \nThe initiative is addressed to schools in the maintained sector\, and we are pleased to be able to offer help with travel expenses and provide refreshments and lunch here in Cambridge free of charge. SUMMARY:‘Ancient Greek Pop’\, a lecture by Dr Armand D’Angour
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 4th February at 4.30 pm\, Dr Armand D’Angour will be speaking on: \n‘Ancient Greek Pop’ \nIn the fifth century BC a new style of music captivated listeners in ancient Athens. Associated with the dramatist Euripides\, some of whose music survives on papyrus\, it was hugely popular and led to the rise of star musicians. Because critics like Plato disapproved of it\, the ’New Music’ was ignored for millennia; but this ancient equivalent of pop music has recently become the focus of exciting new scholarship. What did it sound like\, and how did it affect its audiences? \nArmand D’Angour is Associate Professor in Classical Languages and Literature and Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Jesus College\, Oxford. He has a particular interest in reconstructing ancient Greek music\, and is also a well-known concert cellist and pianist. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. DESCRIPTION:“Today has taught me that Greek theatre is still just as important in today’s society.” “Well done to all involved -­ the students said they haven’t laughed so much in ages!” Testimonial from students attending the Ancient Drama Day 2014 \nThe students and staff at the University of Warwick Department of Classics would like to invite teachers and students to our annual ancient drama day for schools on Tuesday 27th January 2015.  \nThe day will focus around a special schools’ performance of Aristophanes Thesmophoriazusae\, produced and directed by the Classics students at Warwick (translated into English by Clive Letchford\, Teaching Fellow in the department)\, to be performed in the main theatre of Warwick University’s prestigious Arts Centre. This event will be part of Warwick University’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. \nSupporting the performance\, we are organising a series of lectures and seminars specifically for school students to link in with Latin\, Greek\, Classical Civilisation\, Ancient History\, Drama and English syllabuses at GCSE and AS/A2 (no previous knowledge of the subject area or play will be expected). These include: \n–     An introduction to the world of ancient theatre \n–     An examination of the main themes of the Thesmophoriazusae \n–     A comparison of the different forms of ancient comedy \n–     Close analysis of several ancient comedies and their relationship to tragedy \n–     An investigation into the links between ancient drama and modern drama \n–     A study of the place of women within ancient Greek culture \n–     A workshop on the problems and opportunities of producing ancient drama in \nthe modern era \nThe day will begin at 11am and finish at 5pm. DESCRIPTION:I would like to invite everyone to two events that the Birmingham and Midlands Classical Association are holding in the coming months.  \nOur first event is a Christmas Social\, to be held at the University of Birmingham\, on Wednesday 3 December 2014 at 6pm. Professor Simon Esmonde Cleary will be speaking about recent discoveries at Chedworth Roman Villa\, and after the talk there will be drinks and canapés\, along with a chance to meet other Classics teachers\, speak with academic staff and\, of course\, celebrate Christmas and the end of term! \nTickets for this event will be £8  each and available from Hayley Graham\, our publicity officer\, at HJG328@student.bham.ac.uk. Sessions are planned on how to approach the 8 and 10 mark questions on both the OCR and WJEC GCSE literature papers\, how to use material culture in the classroom\, including a chance to handle objects from the Classics Department Museum\, and strategies for teaching Classics that can be taken from MFL teaching. The day\, including lunch\, will cost £50. Speakers and workshop leaders will include: Prof. Kevin Butcher\, Dr Suzanne Frey-Kupper\, Prof. Alison Cooley\, Dr Jane Masséglia\, Dr Zahra Newby\, Dr Dan Orrells and Dr Clare Rowan. SUMMARY:Experiencing Ancient Education
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 19th November\, 2014\, 10am – 5pm \n  \nThis event offers students aged 10–18 the opportunity to experience first-hand what education was like during the Roman Empire\, using the results of recent research by University of Reading academics. It is suitable for those currently studying the Roman period and for those thinking of studying Classics or History at university. \n  \nYou can find out: \n\nhow to write with a reed pen on a potsherd\, or with a stylus on a wax tablet\,\nwhat reading was like in antiquity\,\nwhat study is like in a room where every student is doing something different\, with no lectures\, no technology\, no raised hands\, and no homework – and why the ancient schools worked that way\,\nhow researchers and university students can make new discoveries about the past.\n\n  \nLecturers and current students at the University of Reading will act as ancient teachers to guide students through authentic ancient school exercises using replica school equipment and the teaching and learning methods of ancient education. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 5th November 2014 North London Collegiate School will be hosting two excellent speakers\, Natalie Haynes\, who will be talking about Greek Tragedy and her new novel The Amber Fury and Dr Gail Trimble from Trinity College Oxford\, who will be giving a talk entitled “Depicting and describing Ariadne in Catullus\, Pompeii and beyond” \nBoth talks will last around 45 minutes each and will begin 4.15pm and 5.15pm respectively.
