We want to share our enthusiasm in a new initiative addressed to teachers and pupils in Key Stages 3–5: come visit us at Cambridge and experience both Cambridge and Classics hands-on! The places for each date are strictly limited\, so please be in touch early. If you are unable to make any of the dates\, we will try to find an alternative day for your visit. \n19th November 2014; 10th February\, 6th March\, 19th June\, 24th June 2015 \nWe hope the prospect of visiting the Faculty appeals to you. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 19th November\, 2014\, 10am – 5pm \n  \nThis event offers students aged 10–18 the opportunity to experience first-hand what education was like during the Roman Empire\, using the results of recent research by University of Reading academics. It is suitable for those currently studying the Roman period and for those thinking of studying Classics or History at university. \n  \nYou can find out: \n\nhow to write with a reed pen on a potsherd\, or with a stylus on a wax tablet\,\nwhat reading was like in antiquity\,\nwhat study is like in a room where every student is doing something different\, with no lectures\, no technology\, no raised hands\, and no homework – and why the ancient schools worked that way\,\nhow researchers and university students can make new discoveries about the past.\n\n  \nLecturers and current students at the University of Reading will act as ancient teachers to guide students through authentic ancient school exercises using replica school equipment and the teaching and learning methods of ancient education. All equipment and costumes will be provided. \n  \nThe event is free\, but booking is essential as places are limited: see http://beinghumanfestival.org/event/experiencing-ancient-education/. \nGroups should book a timed slot and expect their visit to take roughly 2 hours total. \nFurther information is available from E.Dickey@reading.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Evening course: Introduction to Virgil's Aeneid
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Virgil’s Aeneid\nby Eva Mooney \n\nMondays\, 6-7pm \nat the East Oxford Community Classic Centre starting Monday 12th January\, and running for six weeks – free of charge (donations welcome) \n\nThe Aeneid is a monumental work written in the late first century BC about the Trojan hero Aeneas. After his city is razed in the Trojan War\, Aeneas leads a pack of refugees west and founds the Roman race; his descendant Romulus founds Rome. We will read Virgil’s masterpiece in translation\, and you will gain a good knowledge of both one of the most influential classical works and a pivotal period of human history – the Augustan Period in which Virgil wrote. The Aeneid straddles the line between fan-fiction and literary one-upmanship: Aeneas was a minor character in Homer’s Iliad whom Virgil makes the central character of the Aeneid and\, similar to the Odyssey\, goes on a journey to find a home. We will also discuss Roman cultural attitudes\, the Aeneid’s place as a piece of propaganda\, and the mythology involved in the story. \n\nYou can book for this course at info@irisproject.org.uk

SUMMARY:'The Furies'\, Performed in Ancient Greek with English surtitles
DESCRIPTION:Who would do right\, fearing nothing? \nFollowing Agamemnon and Clytemnestra\, The Oxford Greek Play presents The Furies. \n15th-18th October \nOrestes has murdered his own mother\, Clytemnestra. In revenge\, she has sent the Furies: terrifying infernal spirits who spread poison and madness across the earth. Their vengeance is simple: kill and be killed. But things are changing. In Athens\, a criminal court has been established to end this cycle of murder and Orestes is its first defendant. \nPerformed by University of Oxford students\, The Oxford Greek Play is a rare opportunity to experience classical drama in its original language. Depicting the first murder trial ever held\, Aeschylus’ The Furies challenges the core of our own legal system. Can guilt be judged? Can justice be wrong? Are victims still victims when the case is closed

SUMMARY:A Midlands Odyssey: with Natalie Haynes
DESCRIPTION:A Midlands Odyssey: with Natalie Haynes\n\nOctober 7 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm | £8 / £6\n\n\n\nHomer’s Odyssey is often claimed to be the great founding work of western literature. Three thousand years on\, the story of Greek hero\, Odysseus\, and his epic journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War continues to inspire and enthral: shipwrecks and sirens\, revenge and seduction\, gods and mythical\ncreatures\, it’s got it all. \nA Midlands Odyssey is a collection of tales from the Odyssey\, commissioned by Writing West Midlands and published by Nine Arches Press. Each tale has been set in the Midlands\, and given new life by local writers. \nIn this unique event\, introduced by writer and Classics specialist\, Natalie Haynes\, some of the commissioned writers perform their new tales live. This is a chance to encounter the likes of Telemachus\, Nausicaa\, Calypso and Laertes as you’ve never seen them before… \nNatalie Haynes is a writer and broadcaster\, and former stand-up comedian.
