All welcome\, no charge. \nA BRIEF HISTORY OF ATLANTIS: Plato’s Ideal State \nThe Atlantis story remains one of the most haunting and enigmatic tales from antiquity\, and one that still resonates very deeply with the modern imagination. But where did Atlantis come from\, what was it like\, and where did it go? \nAtlantis was first introduced by the Greek philosopher Plato in two dialogues the Timaios and Kritias\, written in the fourth century BC. As he philosophises about the origins of life\, the Universe and humanity\, the great thinker puts forward a stunning description of Atlantis\, an island paradise with an ideal society. But the Atlanteans degenerate and become imperialist aggressors: they fight against antediluvian Athens\, which heroically repels their mighty forces\, before a cataclysmic natural disaster destroys the warring states. \nHis tale of a great empire that sank beneath the waves has sparked thousands of years of debate over whether Atlantis really existed. But did Plato mean his tale as history\, or just as a parable to help illustrate his philosophy?

DESCRIPTION:GREEK DRAMA DAY 2018 – 8 FEBRUARY – STRAND CAMPUS \nArrival is from 10.30am for refreshments and an informal Q&A with KCL students. The first talk will start at 11.30am. \n“Choruses: Ancient and Modern” \nAn annual tradition\, the Greek Drama Day offers a range of talks and workshops from leading scholars and theatre professionals. Past attendees have found the day useful for engaging drama and classics students\, learning more about the ancient world\, and getting a taste of how current theatre professionals approach Greek tragedy and comedy. \nThis year the theme of the day is “Choruses: Ancient and Modern”. Speakers include Dr Lucy Jackson\, an expert in the ancient chorus and academic adviser on high profile productions of Greek tragedy at the National Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe\, and Professor Michael Silk\, who has composed music for a number of comedies and tragedies at KCL\, including this year’s Medea. Our workshop leaders include actress Kristin Hutchinson\, who has worked with acclaimed theatre makers such as Katie Mitchell and Emma Rice\, and has an intimate knowledge of working with the Greek chorus on the modern professional stage. Although there will be repeated reference to Medea\, the day’s activities will address other tragedies as well as Aristophanes\, making it ideal both for those interested in this year’s KCL play and those interested in learning more about Greek drama in general. The day will begin with an informal Q&A with KCL students involved in this year’s Greek Play\, providing an opportunity to chat to those currently studying at the college. There will also be a chance to find out more about Professor Edith Hall’s Advocating Classics Education campaign. \nThe day is completely free to all. There is plenty of time afterwards for participants to get some food before heading over to the Greenwood Theatre near London Bridge station for the evening performance of Medea\, including the pre-show talk that starts at 6pm. The talk will be delivered by Professor Fiona Macintosh\, director of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at the University of Oxford. His chief research interests are in ancient Greek poetry (especially epic and lyric)\, ancient Greek religion\, and in the interaction of these two. He has published widely on Homer and the Epic tradition\, including Homer’s Allusive Art\, (OUP) in 2016. \nSession 2: 10.30-11.10 – Dr Peter Thonemann: ‘A burning problem: Croesus on the pyre (Herodotus 1.86-7)’ \nDr Peter Thonemann is Associate Professor in Ancient History at Oxford University and Fellow of Wadham College. He is interested in most aspects of the ancient world\, but particularly in people on the margins of Greco-Roman society: peasants\, slaves\, children\, women\, the illiterate and the underprivileged. He is fascinated by ancient Turkey and wrote a history of what he considers a particularly beautiful part of south-western Asia Minor: The Maeander Valley; A Historical Geography from Antiquity to Byzantium (CUP\, 2011). \nBreak: 11.15-11.30 \nSession 3: 11.30-12.10 – Dr Ellen O’Gorman: ‘The Romans and the Exotic North’ \nDr Ellen O’Gorman is Senior Lecturer in Classics at Bristol University. She teaches Roman historiography of all periods\, Post-Augustan poetry and prose and Roman political thought. She has published on the reception of the ancient historians in translation\, historical fiction\, and political commentaries\, from the Renaissance to the present day. She is the author of Irony and Misreading in the Annals of Tacitus (CUP\, 2000). \nSession 4: 12.15-12.55 – Dr Fiachra Mac Góráin:  ‘Tragic themes in Virgil’s Dido’ \nDr Fiachra Mac Góráin is Lecturer in Classics at University College London. He specialises in Augustan poetry\, Roman authors’ use of the past and the reception to Virgil\, as well as Ireland and the Classics. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce our Festival of Imagined Worlds on Friday 9th February 2018. This event will celebrate novels set in imaginary worlds\, and explore how ancient myths and histories have often inspired these worlds. \nThe event will include author talks and book illustration workshops\, as well as a wide range of stalls\, activities and exhibitions. Visitors will be able to walk through different fictional worlds as they explore the site\, each one containing striking decorations\, workshops\, stalls\, and activities themed on novels and authors. \nThe city of Oxford has a strong historical association with fantasy fiction\, through authors such as C.S. Lewis\, J.R.R. Tolkien\, and many others. This event will also be a celebration of these local links with imagined worlds. \nThe stalls\, activities and exhibitions run from 3 until 6pm. It is free and caters for all ages. DESCRIPTION:Studying Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia at University\nA Conference for Sixth-Formers\nThe Royal Asiatic Society and The British Museum\, London \nSaturday 3rd March 2018\n \n  \nEgypt and Mesopotamia (modern Iraq; ancient Sumer\, Assyria and Babylon) bequeathed to posterity some of the most fascinating remains from all of the ancient world.  Today it is possible to learn the languages\, study the artefacts\, and reconstruct the most varied aspects of these ancient civilisations in astonishing detail. \nBut since these subjects are not offered at A level\, few sixth-formers are aware that they exist as University subjects; indeed\, many A level students might never have had the opportunity to learn about these cultures. \nThe purpose of this one-day conference is to give sixth formers an opportunity to explore what it is like to study Egypt and Mesopotamia at British Universities: to see what makes the subject area so intellectually and culturally exciting\, learn about the various degree courses\, and understand what admissions tutors are looking for. \nThe programme will include talks about careers\, information on admissions\, and the opportunity to meet current students and academic staff from many of the institutions in the UK that teach these subjects\, including: Cambridge\, Oxford\, UCL\, Reading\, Liverpool\, Cardiff\, SOAS\, UEA and KCL. Representatives of the Egypt Exploration Society will also be on hand. There will also be gallery tours (led by current staff and students) and sample lectures. \nTeachers are welcome to bring groups\, but individual students and teachers are equally welcome. DESCRIPTION:2017-18 Free Public Classics Lectures \nProfessor Edith Hall on Homer\, Sappho and Aesop \n  \nGresham College\, London’s oldest Higher Education Institution\, is delighted to announce a series by Visiting Professor in Classics Edith Hall. \nFew academic subjects have influenced the history of the world as much as ancient Greek history and culture\, yet today few people enjoy opportunities to study this important area. This series of lectures by Professor Edith Hall (King’s College London) will cover ancient Greek history by means of looking at depictions of key events and themes in film\, opera and the arts \n1)     Homer’s Iliad via the MovieTroy (2004) Thursday 23 November 2017 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall \nHomer’s Iliad\, the earliest Greek poem\, narrates the archetypal war between ‘Europeans’ and ‘Asiatics’ divided by the Hellespont. Beginning with Wolfgang Peterson’s blockbuster Troy (2004)\, the lecture describes the genesis of the Iliad  between the Mycenaean Late Bronze Age and the 8th century\, when it was first written down with the aid of the new\, phonetic script adapted from the Phoenician civilisation of the Levant. It explores the poem’s plot\, tragic perspective on the human condition\, and the despair caused by untimely death on an immense scale. \n2)     The Age of Tyrants: Sappho via Gounod’s Opera 18 January 2018 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall \nThe heroine of Charles Gounod’s French opera Sapho (1851) sings her last aria O My Immortal Lyre on a Greek cliff before plunging to her death. Sappho\, the most famous poet of the ‘Lyric Age’ of Greece\, in the 7th to 6th centuries BC\, addressed passionate love poems to women. This lecture uncovers what we know about the ‘real Sappho’\, an aristocrat who lived between 630 and 570 BCE on the island of Lesbos and socialised in the lavish courts of parvenu tyrants. But this historical context in no way diminishes her songs’ astonishing immediacy and erotic power. \n1)     Slave Stories: Aesop and Walter Crane Thursday 8 March 2018 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall \nIn 1887 the influential arts-and-crafts book illustrator Walter Crane published The Baby’s Own Aesop\, bringing the homespun wisdom of ancient Greek peasants to a new generation of children. This lecture uses these fables to tackle the least attractive feature of ancient Greece – institutionalised slavery. Beneath the semi-legendary figure of Aesop himself\, a barbarian sold to a Greek slave-owner in the 6th century BCE\, lie tens of thousands of his real-life equivalents. The lecture asks how the ancient fables address power relations in a slave society. Her specialism is ancient Greek literature\, but she enjoys putting the pleasure as well as the rigour into all aspects of ancient Greek and Roman history\, society\, and thought. \nShe has published more than twenty books\, broadcasts frequently on radio and television\, works as consultant with professional theatres\, lectures all over the world\, and publishes widely in academic and mainstream journals and newspapers. She is a world leader in the study of ethnicity\, class and gender in ancient sources\, of ancient theatre\, and of the continuing instrumentality of ancient ideas–especially those of Arisotle–in world culture since the Renaissance. \nShe has held posts at Cambridge\, Oxford\, Durham\, Reading and Royal Holloway\, and visiting positions at Notre Dame\, Swarthmore\, Northwestern\, Leiden\, and Erfurt. \n2)     About Gresham College \nThe College fills lecture halls for its four or so free public lectures every week amounting to around 130 a year. DESCRIPTION:Saturday 10 March 2018 \nBMCA Texts and Topics Conference \nSessions will be held on the A Level Latin set texts including Cicero Pro Milone\, Tacitus Annals I\, Latin Love Elegy and Virgil\, Aeneid 8 and 10. There will also be session on a variety of topics on the A Level Classical Civilisation specification\, including: Invention of the Barbarian\, Love and Relationships\, Greek Theatre\, Greek Religion and Democracy and the Athenians. There will also be both Greek and Latin Unseen masterclasses\, and a plenary on Heroes in the Iliad\, the Odyssey and the Aeneid. \nThe Conference is open to sixth formers from all schools. SUMMARY:Live-Streamed ACE Event for Classics Teachers and Students
DESCRIPTION:One for the diary… \nFrom the Open University… \nThe Classical Studies department at the Open University is pleased to announce our upcoming ACE event on the 12th of March 2018\, 2-5 pm. This event is unique in the ACE programme for being live-streamed and open to any school groups or teachers\, across the UK\, to attend remotely. \nAs part of the AHRC-funded project\, Advocating Classical Education\, this public partnership event will feature a range of talks and activities promoting the study of Classical Civilisation. We are lucky to have Professor Mary Beard\, undoubtedly the best-known Classicist in the country\, joining us: Professor Beard will speak on the importance of Classical Studies in her life and career\, and will also participate in a Classics-themed ‘Question Time’. The event will include talks and interactive sessions from Open University academics on their own research\, guidance for teachers on introducing Classical Civilisation to the curriculum\, and an introduction to the wide range of open access resources provided by the OU.
