SUMMARY:The New Testament from a Roman Perspective with John Davie
DESCRIPTION:From Classics for All…\n\n \n\nThe New Testament from a Roman Perspective with John Davie\n\n \n\nThursday 17 February | 18:00 GMT\n\n \n\nAt the time of Jesus’ birth\, the Roman empire was governed by the emperor Augustus (27 BC – AD 14). The province of Judaea came under direct Roman rule in AD 6 and increasingly strained relations between the Romans and Jewish population had an inevitable influence on the portrayal of events in the Gospels. In this talk\, lecturer John Davie roots the New Testament in its social and political context and shows how a historical approach can help us understand the problems faced by Jewish subjects and Roman authorities alike in Roman Palestine. Covering the political background to Jesus’ life and final days\, the governorship of Pontius Pilate\, and the significance of Jerusalem in Jewish belief\, this wide-ranging talk untangles a pivotal moment in history\, when classical and biblical worlds collide.\n\n \n\nThe first in our series of 2022 Lawyers Group events\, this fascinating talk by lecturer John Davie will be livestreamed from King’s College London via Microsoft Teams and hosted by Sir Rupert Jackson\, Chair of our Lawyers Group Steering Committee.\n\n \n\nTickets (£10 standard\, £5 concession) are available via the link below. You may also to choose to give an additional donation toward Classics for All’s work supporting classics teaching in state schools.\n\n \n\n\n\n \nBuy tickets here\n \n\nThis event will be livestreamed via Microsoft Teams\, but you do not need a Teams account to watch it. After you have purchased your tickets\, you will receive an email containing the link to watch the livestream. Simply click on the link and choose ‘Watch on the web instead’. You will be taken to the livestream webpage where you will see the message ‘The live event hasn’t started’ until the event starts at 6pm.\n\n \n\nJohn Davie:\n\n \n\nJohn Davie is a graduate of Glasgow University and Balliol College\, Oxford\, where he wrote his thesis on Greek Tragedy. For twenty years he held a lectureship at Trinity College\, Oxford\, where he taught undergraduates once a week. He taught Classics at Harrow for nine years and later became Head of Classics at St. Paul’s School\, where he taught until his retirement in 2010. John has translated the complete surviving works of Euripides for Penguin Classics (4 vols) and excerpts from Seneca\, Horace\, and Cicero for Oxford World’s Classics (3 vols). He lives with his wife in South Devon.\n\n \n\nIf you have any queries about this event\, please contact events@classicsforall.org.uk.

SUMMARY:‘Recent discoveries in Pompeii’
DESCRIPTION:It is our aim that all talks will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall. Talks will not be recorded or live streamed. Please email Barbara Bell (bmbellmini@aol.com) to register. There are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. There will be a cost of £5 for visitors. Refreshments available from 6.30pm.\n\n\n\nWednesday 2nd March\, 7pm – Dr Shelley Hales (Bristol)\n\n \n\n‘Recent discoveries in Pompeii’\n\n \n\nAfter years of poor publicity and accusations of mismanagement and neglect aimed at the superintendency at Pompeii\, the new excavations in the city have generated enormous public interest\, positive headlines\, and several internet memes! The combination of the excitement of discovery\, the promise of new technologies to aid excavation and analysis and the novelty of finds fresh from the ground has proved enchanting to the point that this has been seen as Pompeii’s ‘Renaissance’. This talk is an opportunity to take a closer look at the buildings\, objects\, decoration\, and human remains found in Regio V but also to ask whether these excavations are really so different from those of previous generations and what the longer-term consequences might be.

SUMMARY:The Great Gatsby' and 'The Dinner of Trimalchio': Decadence in New York and Ancient Rome\, Dr Emily Pillinger
DESCRIPTION:Key Stage 5 English and Classics KCL Talk – ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘The Dinner of Trimalchio’: Decadence in New York and Ancient Rome\, Dr Emily Pillinger – Thursday 3rd March\, 3-4pm online\n\n \n\nTopic: ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘The Dinner of Trimalchio’: Decadence in New York and Ancient Rome.  This talk shows how one of the greatest loved American novels of the twentieth century emerged from Fitzgerald’s reading of a much less well-known ancient Roman novel by Petronius. It explores how both novels speak to the inequality\, corruption\, and cynicism of their contemporary worlds\, and in the process demonstrates to students that the combined study of English and Classics is a rich and valuable degree focus. There is no need for students to know anything of either works before the talk\, though they may like to read ’The Great Gatsby’ in advance\, or watch the film (dir. B. Luhrmann\, 2013). SUMMARY:Classical Association Teaching Board CPD event: ‘Post-Lockdown Civilisations: Classical Civilisation back in the classroom’
DESCRIPTION:March 12\, 2022 11:00 am – 2:30 pm \nLessons from lockdown: reflecting on the teaching of Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A-Level\, both in the classroom and online. \nAbout this event \nThe Classical Association Teaching Board presents a free online event which offers teachers the opportunity to reflect on and share best practice of the teaching of Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A-Level\, both in the classroom and online. \nParticipants will be given links to pre-recorded materials and will then be invited to join two sessions where the contributors\, led by Rob Hancock-Jones\, will facilitate the sharing of teaching strategies and resources\, and answer any questions on their respective topics. Participants will be encouraged to share their teaching resources\, which will then be made available to all who attend at the end of the day. \nThe event will also include an opportunity for teachers to engage with the Classical Association’s qualifications review\, following the joint CA/CfA survey undertaken at the end of the 2021. The CA’s Education Co-ordinator\, Gráinne Cassidy\, will talk broadly on the aims of the review and the outcomes of the survey\, before providing teachers with the chance to suggest practical ideas for change to the GCSE and A-Level specifications. Participants will also be able to register their interest in being part of the review long-term. \nThe day will be led by practising teachers\, but will be relevant both to experienced practitioners\, and those new to teaching Classical Civilisation. \nFurther information\, and FREE registration via Eventbrite\, is available via this link.

SUMMARY:International CICERO Competition 2022
DESCRIPTION:After a two year hiatus owing to Covid\, the 2022 UK round of the International Cicero Competition will be taking place again this year.  In view of the continuing restrictions and challenges faced by schools\, the competition will now take place online rather than in individual centres\, but as before it will consist of three parts (a team and an individual quiz on a classical civilisation topic) and a Latin translation test.  Schools will be able to complete the three tests in their own time in the week between 26 March and 1 April.  The theme for this year’s competition will be the nature deities\, from the pantheon through to strictly localised gods and goddesses.\n\n \n\nThe entry fee for this year’s competition will be £7.50 for each school.  The entry fee will help to fund prizes for the winning teams.\n\n \n\nFor further details of the competition\, and to enter\, please contact the UK organiser\, Ian Tompkins\, ian.tompkins@ellesmere.com.

SUMMARY:Classics Between the Wars with Dr Daisy Dunn
DESCRIPTION:Classics Between the Wars with Dr Daisy Dunn\n\n \n\nTuesday 12 April | 18:00 BST\n\n \n\nCoinciding with the publication of her new book\, Not Far From Brideshead: Oxford between the Wars\, Dr Daisy Dunn joins Professor Paul Cartledge to discuss the place of classics in the early twentieth century\, from the performance of new translations of Euripides by Gilbert Murray\, to the subversion of ancient history by the Nazis. What role did the classical past play in contemporary culture between the two world wars? SUMMARY:'Euripides’ Medea: barbarian\, witch\, murderer\, goddess' by Prof Edith Hall
DESCRIPTION:LSF Classics Online Summer Lecture by Professor Edith Hall (University of Durham) on Euripides’ Medea \nThu\, 5 May 2022\, 17:30 – 18:30 \nEuripides’ Medea is one of the most fascinating figures in world theatre. This illustrated talk will show how much of her impact stems from the ambiguity about her identity: she is foreign yet speaks elaborate Greek\, adheres to traditional Greek religion yet uses supernatural weapons\, claims to be sane yet commits an enraged murder\, appears to be an all-too-human abandoned wife but disappears on the theatrical machine. We can never be sure exactly who she is. \n
