SUMMARY:Aristotle’s Lyceum
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 30 May 2019\, 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall\, London \nAristotle’s Lyceum https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/aristotle-lyceum \nIn the 330s BCE\, the great philosopher and scientist\, Aristotle of Stagira in northern Greece\, returned to Athens and founded his Lyceum. The first institution in world history to encompass teaching\, research and the collection of a vast library\, the Lyceum immediately began to revive even Plato’s Academy in international reputation. This lecture looks at the archaeological site of the Lyceum\, discovered accidentally in 1996\, and asks how the remains can illuminate Aristotle’s life\, work\, and incomparable contribution across academic disciplines\, from Political Theory and Aesthetics to Zoology\, Physics and Astronomy.

You should also make your story about it as vivid as possible by thinking about touch\, smell\, sight\, taste and sounds.\n\n \n\nRules  \n\n \n\n An entry form must be completed – you can download one from here: http://blogs.kent.ac.uk/clas/2019/01/17/schools-competition-2019/\n Length – no more than 1000 words.\n Subject matter – a story about one of the artefacts in the Roman and Late Antique Artefacts from Egypt: https://blogs.kent.ac.uk/egypt-artefacts/\n The text of the script needs to be double-spaced and in a font larger than Arial 11.\n The text of the script must be written in English.\n Entrants need to be attending a school/college in the United Kingdom – Years 7 to 13.  Students in Higher Education (e.g. Universities) may not enter the competition.\n Submission must be made by email to classicscripts@kent.ac.uk on a completed entry form that has been signed by a member of staff at your school or college.\n All scripts must be received by 6pm on 5 April 2019.\n\n \n\nJudging Process\nThe prize-winning scripts will be judged in relation to their accuracy\, originality and vividness by University of Kent staff from the Department of Classical and Archaeological Studies.\n\n \n\nQueries may be sent to classicscripts@kent.ac.uk\n\n \n\n\n\nUniversity of Kent Department of Classical &Archaeological Studies Short Story Competition for Schools Entry Form 2019\n\n\nName of Script-Writer/Entrant\n\n\n\nSchool of Script-Writer\n\n\n\nAddress of School\n\n\n\nStory (no more than 1000 words)\n\n\nConfirmation of Authorship:\nI confirm that the story above is my own work based on my own original ideas (with the proviso that advice has been given by teachers and friends verbally or in writing).\n\nSigned:\n\n\nSign-off by school/college staff member\n\n\nI confirm that the entrant named above is a member of the school named above\n\n\nName and position held (please print)\n\n\n\nSignature of staff member\n\n\n\nEmail address of staff member/school\n\n\n\n\n \n\nWe look forward to receiving your story submitted on this completed entry form to classicscripts@kent.ac.uk  by 6pm on Friday 5th April 2019. SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Theatre\, Oxford High School\, Belbroughton Road\, Oxford OX2 6XA\, main telephone: 01865 559888 \n \n Wednesday 13th March 2019\n4:30 – 6.00pm \n \n\n \n\nProfessor Matthew Nicholls is a specialist in the political and social history of the Romans and the way that the built environments of Rome and cities around the Roman Empire expressed their values and priorities. His talk will introduce students to his innovative and award-winning virtual 3D model of Ancient Rome.\n\n \n\nThis model makes ancient Rome accessible to thousands of pupils and students by virtually recreating the city\, including vast public buildings such as the Colosseum. This digital model of ancient Rome has proved to be an incredible teaching tool and has won the Guardian and Higher Academy National Teaching Excellence Award in 2014. How creative is the process of a 3D reconstruction of an ancient city? How can one start making their own digital models of the ancient world? Can 3D reconstruction prompt us to ask questions about the sources that inform our understanding of ancient Rome?\n\n \n\nThe talk will be followed by a Question and Answer session and it will be of direct relevance to anyone studying a Classical subject in years 9-13 and\, of course\, to anyone who is interested in Classics\, History\, Archaeology and/or Computer Science.\n\n \n\nThere is no charge for this event. Students under 16 should be accompanied by their teacher but sixth formers are welcome to join us independently. To book your place please email Dr Niki Karapanagioti at n.karapanagioti@oxf.gdst.net with a list of names as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 8th March.

SUMMARY:Reading Classical Latin: Cicero and Ovid
DESCRIPTION:A weekend course by the Institute of Continuing Education\, Cambridge University. \nCicero was Rome’s leading orator and this weekend you have the opportunity to read one of his superbly moulded speeches: in Pro Caelio\, Cicero defends young Marcus Caelius Rufus on charges of political violence. This is no dry legal speech\, but one in which Cicero uses his acerbic rhetoric to attack his client’s lover\, Clodia – painting a vivid picture of the violent times of the Roman Republic. If you prefer myth to the reality of the court room\, then choose to read Book 3 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses\, where you will encounter mad dogs\, a fiery thunderbolt and a boy falling in love with…his own reflection. There is never a dull moment in Ovid’s witty re-writing of Greek myth. Whichever text you choose\, there will be plenty of friendly discussion as we wrestle together with the power of the Latin language. \nFurther Information

SUMMARY:The Cemetery In The Age of Pericles
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 7 March 2019\, 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall\, London \nThe Cemetery In The Age of Pericles https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/pericles-funeral-oration-cemetery \nIn 431 BCE the Athenian statesman Pericles delivered one of the most influential speeches of all time\, his Epitaphios or Funeral Oration. The occasion was at the funeral of the first Athenian soldiers to lose their lives in the Peloponnesian War. This lecture examines the history of this beautiful site\, the momentous occasion on which Pericles spoke\, and the ways in which his speech\, recorded by the historian Thucydides who was present at its delivery\, has informed subsequent epoch-making orations from Lincoln at Gettysburg to Kennedy and Obama.

SUMMARY:KCL Greek Play 2019: Antigone
DESCRIPTION:KCL brings Sophocles thrilling exploration of resistance and responsibility to life in a daring new production. Ancient questions are re-framed for the twenty-first century: when personal values clash with the government\, is duty to your beliefs or to the sanctity of the law more important? How acceptable is civil disobedience against an unchecked power? These questions play out in this battle of the individual against the state\, staged under the relentless scrutiny of twenty four hour news. Following the success of last years acclaimed production of Medea\, which played to over a thousand audience members across its run\, the 2019 Greek Play celebrates another defiant woman of Greek tragedy and will again be performed in a combination of ancient Greek and English. \nThe play will be performed at the Greenwood Theatre (55 Weston Street\, SE1 3RA) on the following dates and times: \n13 February – 2.30pm and 7pm\n14 February – 7pm\n15 February – 2.30pm and 7pm \nThere will be pre-show talks and discussions featuring leading scholars at 6pm every evening\, free to that evening’s ticket holders. \nPLEASE NOTE: School & further education groups wanting to book should email Sophie Norgate\, this year’s Business Manager\, directly at greekplay@kcl.ac.uk. Teachers accompanying their students go free – please contact Sophie to arrange.

SUMMARY:‘Song of Arms and a Man’\, Readings from Virgil’s Aeneid
DESCRIPTION:Reception Room\, Wills Memorial Building \nThe ‘Song of Arms and a Man’ tells the story of Aeneas’ escape from Troy\, his stay with Dido and his struggle to fulfil his destiny as founder of Rome. These readings from Virgil’s Aeneid are selective\, but tell the whole story of the poem\, rarely heard\, in a unique presentation of the original verse\, echoing the ancient culture of public performance of poetry. \nGeorge Sharpley’s adaptation of the poem is read by Emma Kirkby\, Matthew Hargreaves\, Elizabeth Donnelly and Llewelyn Morgan. The event is organised by The Latin Qvarter\, in collaboration with the Bristol Classics Hub and the Institute of Greece\, Rome\, and the Classical Tradition at the University of Bristol. \nTickets for this event are now on sale. Further information can be found here. \nIf you would like to bring your students to this event\, please contact Richard Cole at classics-hub@bristol.ac.uk
