SUMMARY:LATIN CAMP 2024 (Mon 22nd July to Sat 3rd August)
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \n\n\n\nI am delighted to announce that we have now opened for applications to join us this summer – please visit www.latincamp.co.uk for full details and simple online application. 2024 dates are Monday 22nd July to Saturday 3rd August\, once again at Harrogate Ladies’ College. The website has full details on all our different courses suitable for school students and how we feel each age group will benefit. It also contains details on such things as our costs\, our tutors (who come almost entirely from teaching backgrounds and usually at highly regarded UK schools)\, the facilities and accommodation\, our typical programme of events\, our policy on U18 students and hopefully a feel for “Camp life” generally. \n\n\n\nThe usual minimum age is post-Y10 but we will consider post-Y9 students if they have studied Latin for at least three years or wish to join a beginners’ group. I attach the 2023 daily routine and programme of lectures\, grammar clinics\, trips and events which will give you an immediate idea of what we are about. I also attach my own report on the 2023 Summer School. (Hard copies of fliers will reach schools shortly.) I would be grateful if you pass all this on to anyone at all who might be interested. \n\n\n\nWe also have various bespoke courses for teachers so if you know someone new to Latin teaching (this could equally be an NQT or an experienced teacher of another subject)\, please do pass this onto them. (We can usually secure at least partial funding for places on these courses.) \n\n\n\nAt our core is the intensive preparation and reading of Latin texts. This happens formally in small teaching sets of very similar ability and experience but far more unquantifiable learning happens in all the “in-between” moments\, be they in groups between lessons sat out in the sun\, or at night in the boarding houses. That said\, Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff\, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz\, the site visits\, the staff play\, the costume party. It’s about discovering\, identifying with and joining a wider community of classicists\, making contacts and friends for life. \nProgramme | Director’s Report\n\n\n\nPlease do not hesitate to email me (d.stephenson@warwickschool.org) if you have any questions or indeed suggestions – I would love to hear from you. \n\n\n\nYours sincerely\, \n\n\n\nDavid Stephenson Director JACT Latin Summer School

SUMMARY:UCL Summer School in Ancient Philosophy 2024
DESCRIPTION:University College London (Some courses are available in an online format)\nMonday 08 July to Fri 12 July 2024\n\n \n\nWhat are the origins of the world? How can we achieve happiness? What is the best form of government? Is democracy good? These are only some of the questions which ancient philosophers tried to answer more than 2\,500 years ago. Their bold and unprecedented enterprise prompted an intellectual revolution\, the relevance of which has not since faded. The Summer School in Ancient Philosophy aims to follow the steps of the ancient philosophers in their enquiries on the world and human life\, and explore their continuing importance today.\n\n \n\nThe Summer School offers a five-day programme covering the major themes and thinkers of Ancient Philosophy. There will be four classes each day\, between 10:30 am and 3.30pm. Courses will be held in person unless otherwise specified. For more details about the modules’ format\, please see below or get in touch with us. Students will have access to a variety of online material before and throughout the course. The fee is £160. The course is not residential.\n\n \n\nStudents will be assigned to teaching groups of normally not more than 15-20 people. Groups will comprise students with similar levels of knowledge of the subject. Classes will consist of lectures\, close reading of texts\, and debates and will touch on a variety of themes\, including ethics\, metaphysics\, and theories of knowledge. Texts will be studied in translation\, though some classes will be offered in the original language. The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding. Students are expected to actively participate in classes\, and they will be invited to discuss and critically engage with texts along with other students and teachers. Our tutors include some of the most talented and passionate teachers of ancient philosophy in the London area and beyond.\n\n \nFurther Information and Booking

SUMMARY:’In Ithaka’ at the Greenwood Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Teachers and students are invited to join us at KCL’s Greenwood Theatre on Friday June 28\, 6.30-8pm for a free performance of ‘In Ithaka’. ‘In Ithaka’ is an operatic work-in-progress\, co-developed and sponsored by the Penelope’s Web creative research project. The performance will include a Q&A with creative artists\, performers\, and academics.\n\n\nPenelope’s Web is an opera project that stems from Homer’s ancient Greek epic\, the Odyssey. It explores the motivations of Odysseus’ wife Penelope\, the great exemplar of feminine endurance and cunning\, and the other characters left behind in Odysseus’ palace on the island of Ithaka. Cheryl Frances-Hoad (composer) and Jeanne Pansard-Besson (librettist and director) are creating a work that questions how Penelope’s story has been told in the past\, and reflects on new ways in which contemporary music can give voice to the minor characters of the Odyssey.\n\nInspired by the setting of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad\, ‘In Ithaka’ takes place in a Greek Underworld where shape-shifting characters recall and retell their past lives. Two mezzo-sopranos will sing the role of Penelope\, and the Choir of King’s College London will sing the part of her suitors and the enslaved palace workers. This première of ‘In Ithaka’ in the Greenwood Theatre shows how the collaborative work of Penelope’s Web is giving a twenty-first century afterlife to the lost soundworlds of ancient Greek epic.\n\n\n\nAll Classics teachers and students may find this event of interest\, but year 12 students of Class Civ are likely to find it particularly helpful for exploring a novel dimension to ‘World of the Hero’.\n\nThe event is open to the public to turn up on the night\, but we would appreciate people signing up at the following link to give us some idea of numbers:\n\n\nhttps://www.tickettailor.com/events/kingscollegelondon56/1292323a

SUMMARY:'Having a Queer Old Time with Tibullus'\, an Online Talk
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 25 June at 5.30. Registration on this link (and below).\n\n \n\nTo celebrate Pride Month and Diversity Week\, LSF Classics Lecture by Dr Joe Watson (Teaching Fellow in Latin Literature and Language\, University of Warwick)\n\n \n\nTitle: ‘Having a Queer Old Time with Tibullus’\n\n \n\nAbstract: The Roman poet Tibullus (c. 55 BCE–c. 19 BCE) wrote two books of love poems in the elegiac genre\, most of which were addressed to two women named Delia and Nemesis. However\, a short cycle of three poems (Tibullus 1.4\, 1.8 and 1.9) chronicles the poet-lover’s affair and break-up with a boy called Marathus. In this lecture\, Dr Joe Watson will explore how Tibullus connects this homoerotic relationship with the themes of time and cyclicality. Through the use of some contemporary queer theory\, we will explore the connections between homosexuality\, queerness\, time and poetry.\n\n \n\nThe talk will be held on Teams and it is a free public lecture.\n\n \n\nTo register for the talk please follow this link.\n\n \n\nIf you have any queries\, please contact Dr M Gonzalez Rodriguez at m.rodriguez@lsf.org‘

SUMMARY:KCL Greek Play 2024
DESCRIPTION:The KCL Greek play is taking place on 19-21st June. The play is an adaptation of Lysistrata. There will be a 30 min presentation by a distinguished scholar before each evening performance\, starting at 6pm\, free to evening-ticket-holders. \n\n\n \n\nJune 19: Professor Edith Hall  (Durham University).\n\n\n\nJune 20: Dr. Nick Lowe from Royal Holloway.\n\n\n\nJune 21: Dr. Naomi Scott from the University of Bristol.\n\n\n\n \nFurther information can be found via the QR code on the poster. \n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n \nA script unsuitable for Victorian sensibilities. A growing gender revolution. A student theatre group. What could go wrong?   \n\n\n \nNear the end of the nineteenth century\, a group of students gather to put on their 6th annual Greek Play- a performance of an original ancient text. However\, (recent) tradition is disrupted when they find out that not only are they to stage the seemingly unstageable Lysistrata\, but that female students from the separate Ladies Department will participate for the first time.   \n\n\n \nUsing a mixture of new material and original text from Aristophanes\, Lysistrata in the Wings explores the reinterpretation of ancient theatre and how it takes on new meanings for each generation.’

And of course\, a lovely opportunity to meet other Latin/ Classics teachers and perhaps forge some connections. SUMMARY:CLASSICS FOR ALL: Key Stage 3 Classics and English CPD: Using Classical Heroes and Mythology in Key Stage 3 English
DESCRIPTION:CLASSICS FOR ALL: Key Stage 3 Classics and English CPD: Using Classical Heroes and Mythology in Key Stage 3 English\n \nWednesday 24th April 2024\, 4–5pm\, Online\n \n\nAlastair Thorley is an experienced Classics teacher and A Level examiner. He has produced resources for the Classical Association on the Classical Civilisation GCSE syllabus and has trained teachers new to the subject through both Classics For All and Keynote. He also contributed to two of the A Level Classical Civilisation textbooks.\n\n \n\nAlastair has created resources based on the Mary Beard video on “Heroes” and will be discussing how these resources can be used by teachers.\n\n \n\nThe idea of what it means to be a hero is always interesting and endlessly evolving. The media prematurely and ironically announces the death of superhero movies in every weekly review of the latest contributions to the genre in the cinema or on the television. We have been\, are and always will be fascinated by what it takes to be better than ourselves.\n\n \n\nThese resources have been designed to enable pupils to look behind the superhero and consider how these characters are created and made interesting and relatable. Neither the pupils nor the teacher needs to have any knowledge of Classical myths and all are encouraged to draw from their own personal experiences. The myths are told in the form of short\, impactful videos. The resources could lead to the pupils producing a longer piece of creative writing but are also designed to be self-contained.\n\n \n\nTo register for the CPD please complete this form by Monday 22nd April. Zoom details for the event will be sent out on Tuesday 23rd April.

SUMMARY:ELCSS 2-day GCSE Easter Latin Revision Course 2024
DESCRIPTION:Two full days of intensive Latin Language learning and consolidation in direct preparation for the GCSE examinations in the summer. Candidates will be coming to the end of Year 11 and will be readying themselves for examination. We will be revisiting aspects of the language specification that students generally find difficult\, like the indirect statement\, the ablative absolute\, and the uses of the subjunctive. These set-pieces feature in every GCSE examination paper and it is important that the grammatical knowledge of them is secure. We will look at these constructions in isolation\, and then also disguised in unseen passages of Latin\, GCSE past papers\, where they can be more difficult to identify.\n\n \nInformation Brochure\n \n\nBy the end of two days\, students will not only be able to comfortably understand the core linguistic grammatical detail of the Latin syntactical constructions\, but also be able to recognise and translate them with confidence. The course will directly improve public examination performance as they will have readied themselves for the content.\n\n \n\nBook with their online booking form!

SUMMARY:National Latin Spelling Bee 2024
DESCRIPTION:After a long interruption due to Covid\, this unique and exciting event is making its return.\n\n \n\nIt will take place on the 27th March 2024 and last time we had over 25 schools taking place. It will be great to get as many schools as possible on board.\n\n \n\n \n\nWishing to keep it simple\, please see below some of main rules of the competition.\n\n \n\n This event will open for KS3 (ideally Year 7-8) students and promises delightful surprises and valuable prizes from esteemed authors and organizations in the classics field. It is also a day of celebration\, uniting schools in their reverence for Latin.\n \n Each school is required to conduct knock-out rounds within their institutions\, based on vocabulary booklets provided to them. Each school will select the top 5 students who will represent their school in the big final. It is essential to adhere strictly to the specified group number to ensure equitable scoring among all participating schools.\n \n The spelling bee will focus on CLC book 1 and Suburani up to chapter 10.
