SUMMARY:GCSE Classical Civilisation Training Day at Warwick School
DESCRIPTION:From David Stephenson …\n\n\n\nDear All\,\n\n\n\nI have arranged for OCR to deliver two training / feedback days at Warwick School:\n\n\n\n Thursday 6th February – A Level Class. Civ.\, 10.00-16.00\n\n Thursday 27th February – GCSE Class. Civ.\, 10.00-12.30\n\n\n\nRefreshments will be served from 9.15 then at various points including a full hot and cold buffet lunch on both days – I’m not kidding when I say our kitchens are really rather good at catering for events like this! I am also hoping that Hellenic Bookservice will be with us for at least the full day on February 6th.\n\n\n\nThe format will be exactly the same as you would get if you went to one of OCR’s centrally organised training days. Quoting their CPD website: “uses past series’ assessment materials\, including new candidate exemplars\, to help equip you with the knowledge and understanding to optimise your delivery of all externally assessed components. The event will support you to develop an in-depth understanding of the assessment expectations\, marking criteria and outcomes from past series. You’ll have opportunities to practice marking real candidate responses; receive guidance on how and why candidate responses secured a range of marks; interact with an expert trainer and explore ideas to enhance teaching and learning for future preparation and delivery.”\n\n\n\nWe ask for a contribution towards the overall cost (per school – send as many teachers as you like) of £120 for the full A Level day\, £60 for the GCSE morning or £150 for both. Please use this Microsoft Forms link to sign up for either or both events. https://forms.office.com/e/10iwN27WJc?origin=lprLink\n\n\n\nPlease do tell me if you wished to be removed from my mailing lists.\n\n\n\nYours sincerely\,\n\n\n\nDavid Stephenson\n\n\n\nPS I will take this (and any!) opportunity to plug the JACT Latin Summer School – full details and online application on www.latincamp.co.uk including bespoke courses for people new to teaching Latin. I attach our flier and I am always happy to post hard multiple hard copies direct to anyone who would like them\, though they should make it round most schools anyway. I am also always very happy to talk to anyone about “Camp” so do let me know if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:The Minotaur's Maze: Encountering Neurodivergence in Classics
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cora Beth Fraser (The Open University)\n \nThursday 6 February 2025\, 12pm\nSt Luke’s Chapel\nFree\, but registration is required\n \nRegister via Eventbrite\n \n\nThe social model of disability describes people as being disabled by barriers in society\, rather than by our own impairment or difference. Barriers can be physical\, practical\, structural\, social or conceptual.\n\n \n\nBut barriers aren’t always negative. Some we choose to build ourselves\, for very good reasons.\n\n \n\nThis talk will explore the imagery of barriers and walls\, looking at how they are associated with neurodivergent – and particularly autistic – people\, both in teaching and learning and in popular culture. How do we differentiate between barriers and boundaries? When does ‘inclusion’ become a trap? And how does environment shape our experience of neurodivergent anxiety\, even online?\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n \n\nCora Beth Fraser is an Associate Lecturer and Honorary Associate in Classics at The Open University\, where she works with adult distance learners. Her teaching-related scholarship focuses on practical interventions to recognise and support neurodiversity in online learning. At The Open University she created and developed the Relaxed Tutorial Project\, which has helped to roll out autism-friendly adjustments to thousands of students. Beyond the OU\, in 2021 she founded a national organisation called Asterion\, dedicated to celebrating and supporting neurodiversity in Classics. In 2024 she was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship. Cora Beth also researches neurodivergence in the reception of classical myth\, and is currently working on a book on Autism and the Minotaur\, exploring representations of isolation and monstrous difference in popular culture.

SUMMARY:Online Lecture by Professor Helen Lovatt on 'Grief and Narrative in Aeneid 2'
DESCRIPTION:Online\nWed 27th November 2024 5:30PM \nBOOK NOW! \nProfessor Helen Lovatt (University of Nottingham) will be presenting part of her current research on The Power of Sadness in Virgil’s Aeneid which draws on trauma and grief studies to explore possible ‘post-traumatic growth’ in the Aeneid and their relationship to power structures. \nIs negative emotion a ‘cost of power’ or a cause of power? How does grief experience and behaviour characterise the Aeneid and what effects do trauma have in the narrative? This talk will explore the nature of grief narratives as potentially therapeutic or retraumatising. How is the narrating context of Aeneid 2 portrayed\, and how does that context shape the emotions expressed and created? How is grief experience portrayed in the narrative and to what extent is emotional experience a catalyst for action? Is the grief narrative of Aeneid 2 gendered and in what ways? How much is trauma a single transformative event\, and how much an ongoing process of insecurity in the Aeneid? \nThe event will be held on Teams.\nPlease note: the link to the event will be shared via email to those registered.

SUMMARY:Euripides' Orestes\, Keble College\, Oxford
DESCRIPTION:From the folks at OALS…\n\n \n\nDear all\,\n\n \n\nThe Oxford Ancient Languages Society is delighted to invite you to an exceptional opportunity this Michaelmas term: a full production of Euripides’ Orestes. Directed by Nicholas Romanos and Andrew Raynes\, the play will be performed from 27th to 30th of November at the O’Reilly Theatre\, Keble College\, Oxford\, with evening performances and an additional matinée on the 30th.\n\n \n\nIn Argos\, Orestes\, with the help of sister Electra and their friend Pylades\, has committed the worst crime imaginable: he has killed his own mother\, in vengeance for her murder of his father\, and is now tormented by the Furies. But what will happen next? Can Orestes and Electra escape death at the hands of the Argives\, who see them more as criminals than as heroes? And can they rely on the help of their uncle Menelaus\, who has just returned from Troy with his wife\, the much-despised Helen?\n\n \n\nAs the play unfolds\, we are forced ourselves to face some difficult questions: are Orestes and his friends in fact heroes or criminals? How far can the heroic ethic stretch before it becomes little more than self-parody? And above all\, can we even attach a meaning to this vivid high drama?\n\n \n\nThe Orestes is one of the most exciting of Euripides’ plays\, and the most popular in antiquity. It displays the height of his dramatic innovation\, and—rarely for Greek tragedy—while its characters and framework are drawn from traditional mythology\, the plot itself is entirely Euripides’ invention.\n\n \n\nThis production\, a unique collaborative project led by the Oxford Ancient Languages Society\, will stage a complete dramatic recreation of Euripides’ play\, demonstrating the vivid dramatic fruits of meticulous\, interdisciplinary scholarship.\n\n \n\nIt will be performed entirely in the original Ancient Greek (with English surtitles)\, with authentic costumes and masks. Crucially\, it will restore Euripides’ drama to its full musical glory. All the sections of the play that were originally sung have been set to music\, newly composed in the ancient Greek modes\, using all available evidence about Euripidean music\, and incorporating an ancient fragment of music from the play that may be by Euripides’ own hand. The chorus and our talented solo singers will be accompanied on the aulos (ancient double-pipes) by the renowned aulete Callum Armstrong\, resulting in a transformative audience experience\, closer than ever to the Athenian stage.\n\n \n\nSave the date for this extraordinary experience! Tickets will go on sale from 14 October. For any inquiries\, please write us at oxfordancientlanguages@gmail.com. We hope to see you there!\n\n \n\nBest wishes\,\n\n \n\nOALS Committee

SUMMARY:Summer School in Homer 2024\, UCL
DESCRIPTION:University College London\, UK\nMonday 29th July to Friday 2nd August 2023\n\n \n\nThe Summer School is now running its 11th year and it offers five days of intensive teaching in Homer. There are five language and literature classes each day (between 10.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.) as well as lectures and other events after the classes. The fee is £160. The course is not residential. Bursaries and travel grants may be available for certain categories of students.\n\n \n\nStudents will be assigned to teaching groups of 15-20 people. As far as possible groups comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, and they will find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. Some classes concentrate chiefly on reading texts\, while others offer a mixture of grammar and translation or commentary practice. Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Homer in the London area and beyond.\n\n \n\nThe Summer School in Homer will cater for a wide range of interests. It is expected that a substantial number of students from both schools and universities will apply\, but also mature students who wish to learn Homeric Greek or learn more about the Homeric world. Our principal concern is to provide a thorough programme of language and literature learning in a lively university environment.\n\n \n\nWe offer a full five-day course in one the following classes:\n\n \n\n Greek for Beginners\n \n Intermediate Greek\n \n Advanced Greek\n \n Homer in Translation\n \n Modern Novels and Homer\n \n Gender and Homer\n \n Ancient Philosophy and Homer\n \n Comparative Literature and Homer\n \n The Victorian Homer\n\n \n\nFor application forms click here\, and for other enquiries\, please email the Director of the Summer School:\n\n \n\nhomersummerschool@ucl.ac.uk\nThe Director\, Dr Antony Makrinos\nSummer School in Homer 2024\nDepartment of Greek & Latin University College London

SUMMARY:The East London Classics Summer School 2024
DESCRIPTION:GCSE Latin intensive course in language skills over 5 days to any student who\, having completed 1\, 2 or 3 years of study\, is preparing for the GCSE level qualification or equivalent. We would expect candidates to have just completed Year 10\, and are due to sit their GCSE examinations in June 2025. The course is ideal for any student who is finding some aspects of the language component of the course difficult\, and is keen to tighten up and refine their grammatical knowledge.\n\nOn offer are some full/half bursaries\, and an Early Bird 10% discount if forms come in by the end of May.\n\n \n\nThe sessions are delivered by highly qualified Classicists who are also experienced teachers\, keen on making Latin accessible to more people\, and to refine and secure Latin understanding through disciplined rigour and fun!\n\n \n\nBy the end of the course\, students will not only be able to comfortably understand the core linguistic grammatical detail of Latin syntactical constructions\, but also be able to recognise and translate them when disguised in a GCSE Latin unseen passage. Students will leave with a considerably greater confidence in reading the language which\, among other things\, will directly benefit public examination performance as well as a greater alertness to a wider range of aspects of the Classical world.\n\n \n\nThis will course run from Monday 29th July through to Friday 2nd August 2024.\n\n \nBrochure\n \n\nDetails here | Booking here

SUMMARY:LATIN CAMP 2024 (Mon 22nd July to Sat 3rd August)
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \n\n\n\nI am delighted to announce that we have now opened for applications to join us this summer – please visit www.latincamp.co.uk for full details and simple online application. 2024 dates are Monday 22nd July to Saturday 3rd August\, once again at Harrogate Ladies’ College. The website has full details on all our different courses suitable for school students and how we feel each age group will benefit. It also contains details on such things as our costs\, our tutors (who come almost entirely from teaching backgrounds and usually at highly regarded UK schools)\, the facilities and accommodation\, our typical programme of events\, our policy on U18 students and hopefully a feel for “Camp life” generally. \n\n\n\nThe usual minimum age is post-Y10 but we will consider post-Y9 students if they have studied Latin for at least three years or wish to join a beginners’ group. I attach the 2023 daily routine and programme of lectures\, grammar clinics\, trips and events which will give you an immediate idea of what we are about. I also attach my own report on the 2023 Summer School. (Hard copies of fliers will reach schools shortly.) I would be grateful if you pass all this on to anyone at all who might be interested. \n\n\n\nWe also have various bespoke courses for teachers so if you know someone new to Latin teaching (this could equally be an NQT or an experienced teacher of another subject)\, please do pass this onto them. (We can usually secure at least partial funding for places on these courses.) \n\n\n\nAt our core is the intensive preparation and reading of Latin texts. This happens formally in small teaching sets of very similar ability and experience but far more unquantifiable learning happens in all the “in-between” moments\, be they in groups between lessons sat out in the sun\, or at night in the boarding houses. That said\, Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff\, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz\, the site visits\, the staff play\, the costume party. It’s about discovering\, identifying with and joining a wider community of classicists\, making contacts and friends for life. \nProgramme | Director’s Report\n\n\n\nPlease do not hesitate to email me (d.stephenson@warwickschool.org) if you have any questions or indeed suggestions – I would love to hear from you. \n\n\n\nYours sincerely\, \n\n\n\nDavid Stephenson Director JACT Latin Summer School

SUMMARY:UCL Summer School in Ancient Philosophy 2024
DESCRIPTION:University College London (Some courses are available in an online format)\nMonday 08 July to Fri 12 July 2024\n\n \n\nWhat are the origins of the world? How can we achieve happiness? What is the best form of government? Is democracy good? These are only some of the questions which ancient philosophers tried to answer more than 2\,500 years ago. Their bold and unprecedented enterprise prompted an intellectual revolution\, the relevance of which has not since faded. The Summer School in Ancient Philosophy aims to follow the steps of the ancient philosophers in their enquiries on the world and human life\, and explore their continuing importance today.\n\n \n\nThe Summer School offers a five-day programme covering the major themes and thinkers of Ancient Philosophy. There will be four classes each day\, between 10:30 am and 3.30pm. Courses will be held in person unless otherwise specified. For more details about the modules’ format\, please see below or get in touch with us. Students will have access to a variety of online material before and throughout the course. The fee is £160. The course is not residential.\n\n \n\nStudents will be assigned to teaching groups of normally not more than 15-20 people. Groups will comprise students with similar levels of knowledge of the subject. Classes will consist of lectures\, close reading of texts\, and debates and will touch on a variety of themes\, including ethics\, metaphysics\, and theories of knowledge. Texts will be studied in translation\, though some classes will be offered in the original language. The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding. Students are expected to actively participate in classes\, and they will be invited to discuss and critically engage with texts along with other students and teachers. Our tutors include some of the most talented and passionate teachers of ancient philosophy in the London area and beyond.\n\n \nFurther Information and Booking

SUMMARY:’In Ithaka’ at the Greenwood Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Teachers and students are invited to join us at KCL’s Greenwood Theatre on Friday June 28\, 6.30-8pm for a free performance of ‘In Ithaka’. ‘In Ithaka’ is an operatic work-in-progress\, co-developed and sponsored by the Penelope’s Web creative research project. The performance will include a Q&A with creative artists\, performers\, and academics.\n\n\nPenelope’s Web is an opera project that stems from Homer’s ancient Greek epic\, the Odyssey. It explores the motivations of Odysseus’ wife Penelope\, the great exemplar of feminine endurance and cunning\, and the other characters left behind in Odysseus’ palace on the island of Ithaka. Cheryl Frances-Hoad (composer) and Jeanne Pansard-Besson (librettist and director) are creating a work that questions how Penelope’s story has been told in the past\, and reflects on new ways in which contemporary music can give voice to the minor characters of the Odyssey.\n\nInspired by the setting of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad\, ‘In Ithaka’ takes place in a Greek Underworld where shape-shifting characters recall and retell their past lives. Two mezzo-sopranos will sing the role of Penelope\, and the Choir of King’s College London will sing the part of her suitors and the enslaved palace workers. This première of ‘In Ithaka’ in the Greenwood Theatre shows how the collaborative work of Penelope’s Web is giving a twenty-first century afterlife to the lost soundworlds of ancient Greek epic.\n\n\n\nAll Classics teachers and students may find this event of interest\, but year 12 students of Class Civ are likely to find it particularly helpful for exploring a novel dimension to ‘World of the Hero’.\n\nThe event is open to the public to turn up on the night\, but we would appreciate people signing up at the following link to give us some idea of numbers:\n\n\nhttps://www.tickettailor.com/events/kingscollegelondon56/1292323a
