SUMMARY:Cambridge Greek Play 2016: Antigone and Lysistrata
DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge Greek Play Committee are thrilled to announce that the \n2016 Cambridge Greek Play will be a double bill of Sophocles’ ANTIGONE and Aristophanes’ LYSISTRATA. \nThe committee are excited to be welcoming back director Helen Eastman and composer Alex Silverman\, the team behind AGAMEMNON (2010) and PROMETHEUS/FROGS (2013)\, for their third consecutive Greek Play. The production will take place at the Cambridge Arts Theatre from 12th to 15th October 2016 (please note these dates are still provisional). \nBooking information and details for school groups will be available in April 2016. We anticipate that the production will be appropriate for students aged 14 and over; anyone wishing for advice on bringing a younger group should contact the producer\, Dr Chris Whitton (clw36@cam.ac.uk). \nGreek Play enthusiasts will also be pleased to hear about the launch of our new website\, www.cambridgegreekplay.com. The website includes full recordings of the 2013 productions of PROMETHEUS and FROGS\, audio recordings of the schools talks given before the performances\, and educational materials from the last 15 years of Greek plays. There are also photographs and archive materials from every Greek play going back to 1882. We hope that teachers and schools everywhere will make use of these resources – and we’d also welcome feedback on the kinds of resources we could provide in future.

DESCRIPTION:News of an exciting student production of Antigone… \nA student (Years 9-12) production of Antigone will be performed at Woodford County High School (High Road\, Woodford Green\, IG8 9LA (North-east London)) in our Greek Theatre. It is happening on Tuesday October 18th at 16:30 and ending around 17:30 with refreshments provided post-performance. We are using the National Theatre’s version of the play (the one with Christopher Ecclestone as Creon)\, which has been well edited by a drama teacher\, who is also directing the production. SUMMARY:Dr Angus Bowie to speak on Greeks and Persians in Herodotus
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 16th November at 4.30 pm\, Dr Angus Bowie will be speaking on: \n‘Greeks and Persians in Herodotus: some surprises’ \nThis talk will examine the portrayal of the two sides in the Persian wars. Because Herodotus wrote in Greek it is easy to read his work as very pro-Hellenic. Dr Bowie will look at passages which allow a rather different view. He will be focusing on Book 6\, which includes the current A-level set text. \nDr Bowie is Emeritus Fellow of the Queen’s College\, Oxford\, having just retired after 35 years as the Lobel Fellow in Classics. He is the author of numerous books on Greek literature\, including a commentary on Book 8 of Herodotus. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.10 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. DESCRIPTION:Peter Jones will be giving a talk entitled ‘From angina to rheumatism: Ancient medical terminology and practice’ on Thu 10 November 2016 6.30pm. \nA Friends of Classics Memorial Lecture   \nMuch of the terminology of modern medicine derives from ancient Greek\, often via the Latin into which Roman doctors converted it\, e.g. Greek στόμαχος→Latin stomachus\, Greek καρκίνος ‘crab’→Latin cancer. This rich inheritance is fortunately not matched by any adherence to ancient medical practice\, though Greeks are credited with the invention of ‘rational’ medicine to some of whose basic principles we still adhere. \nThis talk will explore the language and practice of ancient medicine\, with many eye-opening and sometimes eye-watering examples. All Greek will be transliterated\, and (with the Latin) translated where necessary\, including that well-known Latin word git\, with its many health-giving properties. \nDr Peter Jones will deliver this talk on ‘From angina to rheumatism: Ancient medical terminology and practice’ as the first in an annual series of Friends of Classics Memorial Lectures. \nThe lectures put on by Friends of Classics were classed as seminars rather than monologues. The atmosphere was relaxed\, and interruptions\, objections and questions were welcome throughout\, indeed encouraged. Bonus points were added for stumping the speaker. DESCRIPTION:On Monday 23rd January at 4.30 pm\, Professor Stephen Oakley will be speaking on: \n‘Ovid and the fun of being in love’ \nThe talk will show how Ovid departs from his predecessors among the Latin love poets\, who emphasised the pain and passion of being in love\, by constructing a persona that was insincere and witty. Ovid suggests that one can play the game of love without much engaging the emotions; in short\, it can be fun to be in love. \nProfessor Oakley is Kennedy Professor of Latin and Fellow of Emmanuel College\, Cambridge. He has a particular interest in literature of the late Roman Republic and Augustan period. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. SUMMARY:Warwick University Classics Drama Festival for Schools - 24th January 2017
DESCRIPTION:The students and staff at the University of Warwick Department of Classics and Ancient History would like to invite teachers and students to our annual ancient drama festival for schools on Tuesday 24th January 2017.  \nThe day will focus around a special schools’ performance of Sophocles’ Antigone\, directed by Ed Villers. The play will be produced by the Classics students at Warwick (translated into English by Clive Letchford\, Teaching Fellow in the department)\, and will be performed in the Main Theatre of Warwick University’s prestigious Arts Centre. \nSupporting the performance\, the Department is offering a series of lectures and seminars specifically for school students to link in with Latin\, Greek\, Classical Civilisation\, Ancient History\, Drama and English syllabuses at GCSE and AS/A2 (no previous knowledge of the subject area or play will be expected). These include: \n– Dr Michael Scott (Associate Professor of Classics)\, on burial practices and the cult of the dead in Antigone and in Greek tragedy. \n– Dr David Fearn (Associate Professor of Ancient Greek Language and Literature)\, on chorus and character in Sophocles. \n– Dr Emmanuela Bakola (Assistant Professor of Ancient Greek Language and Literature)\, on space and the female in Greek theatre and in Sophocles’ Antigone. \n– Mr Clive Letchford (Teaching Fellow in Greek and Latin)\, on translating Antigone in the 20th and 21st centuries. \n– Ms Emmy Stavropoulou (Doctoral student in Greek Literature & Outreach Assistant)\, on the ‘Ode to Man’ in Sophocles’ Antigone(Ant. 332-83). \n– Mr Ed Villers (Play Director)\, on staging Sophocles’ Antigone. \nThe day will begin at 11am and finish at 5pm. Detailed timings will be announced in due course.
