DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 5th November 2014 North London Collegiate School will be hosting two excellent speakers\, Natalie Haynes\, who will be talking about Greek Tragedy and her new novel The Amber Fury and Dr Gail Trimble from Trinity College Oxford\, who will be giving a talk entitled “Depicting and describing Ariadne in Catullus\, Pompeii and beyond” \nBoth talks will last around 45 minutes each and will begin 4.15pm and 5.15pm respectively. DESCRIPTION:I would like to invite everyone to two events that the Birmingham and Midlands Classical Association are holding in the coming months.  \nOur first event is a Christmas Social\, to be held at the University of Birmingham\, on Wednesday 3 December 2014 at 6pm. Professor Simon Esmonde Cleary will be speaking about recent discoveries at Chedworth Roman Villa\, and after the talk there will be drinks and canapés\, along with a chance to meet other Classics teachers\, speak with academic staff and\, of course\, celebrate Christmas and the end of term! \nTickets for this event will be £8  each and available from Hayley Graham\, our publicity officer\, at HJG328@student.bham.ac.uk. Please email her to reserve tickets by Friday 21 November\, so that we can arrange the catering.  \nOur second event is a Teachers’ Day to be held at the University of Birmingham on Saturday 7 February 2015. Sessions are planned on how to approach the 8 and 10 mark questions on both the OCR and WJEC GCSE literature papers\, how to use material culture in the classroom\, including a chance to handle objects from the Classics Department Museum\, and strategies for teaching Classics that can be taken from MFL teaching. The day\, including lunch\, will cost £50. DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Virgil’s Aeneid\nby Eva Mooney \n\nMondays\, 6-7pm \nat the East Oxford Community Classic Centre starting Monday 12th January\, and running for six weeks – free of charge (donations welcome) \n\nThe Aeneid is a monumental work written in the late first century BC about the Trojan hero Aeneas. After his city is razed in the Trojan War\, Aeneas leads a pack of refugees west and founds the Roman race; his descendant Romulus founds Rome. We will read Virgil’s masterpiece in translation\, and you will gain a good knowledge of both one of the most influential classical works and a pivotal period of human history – the Augustan Period in which Virgil wrote. The Aeneid straddles the line between fan-fiction and literary one-upmanship: Aeneas was a minor character in Homer’s Iliad whom Virgil makes the central character of the Aeneid and\, similar to the Odyssey\, goes on a journey to find a home. SUMMARY:Professor Tim Whitmarsh on Oedipus and Religion
DESCRIPTION:Professor Tim Whitmarsh\, who will begin as Professor of Greek Culture at Cambridge in September\, will be coming to Cranleigh to give a talk about atheism\, Greek tragedy and religion. This talk\, \n‘Oedipus the Atheist. New thoughts on Athenian tragedy and religion’ \nby one of the most innovative British classicists of his generation\, will be of interest to pupils studying ancient Athens or tragedy in any form\, but it will be especially aimed at those at sixth form level. The talk will also be of relevance to pupils studying ancient philosophy aspects of the Religious Studies A-level. \nTuesday 16 September 2014 7pm at  Cranleigh School \nWe would be delighted to welcome anyone who is interested in coming either individually or with groups of pupils. DESCRIPTION:St John’s College\, University of Durham\, 19th – 26th July 2014 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis summer school is for all ages over 16\, from sixth form students to lifelong learners. With accommodation in an extremely attractive college very close to the cathedral\, we enjoy working hard in a delightful environment. \nCourses will be offered in both languages at five levels from beginners to advanced with three one-hour sessions each day. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that on 3rd and 4th July the East Oxford Community Classics Centre will be holding a double-bill of Ancient Athens themed events and workshops\, which will include shows by Re-enactment specialists Comitatus! \nWe are hosting the following community events on the afternoon and evening of 4th July: \n3.30 – 4.30pm – Ancient Athenian Re-enactment show followed by outdoor workshop on Athenian weaponry \n6 – 7pm – “A visit to the Ancient Theatre” – talk by David Raeburn of New College\, Oxford\, on how the theatre of ancient Athens differed from today’s theatre. SUMMARY:Classical Schools Conference on Lesbos
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to take part in a two-week summer camp in all things classical on the beautiful Greek island of Lesbos? \nRunning from June 29th to July 13th 2014\, this course is being organised by Andrea Portante for selected students of licei classici in Italy (high schools with a certain focus on Classics and classical languages\, philosophy\, and the like). The course is run in conjunction with http://www.hyphenology.com. \nAndrea would like to get in touch with teachers\, professors\, graduate students\, PhD candidates\, who might be interested in preparing and teaching a course/worshop. The topics\, within the general theme of classics\, are open. Proposals are welcome\, based on the interests and passions of the teacher. Favourable are those which have a cross-discipline approach. The important thing\, both for the subject AND the teacher is the ability to stimulate interest and passion. \nThe standard deal is for the teacher to teach ten 90-minute classes and be available for general supervision for an additional hour or two each day. DESCRIPTION:The comedy of Aristophanes – a weekend course from 27–29 June \nThe Greeks invented comedy as well as tragedy\, and we hope\, in a rambunctious\, joke-packed weekend\, to demonstrate how\, in the 5th century BC\, Aristophanes created the hilarious template for the European comic theatre. Students will bring to life splendid scenes from his Wasps\, Women at the Thesmophoria and Frogs. A Saturday-night enactment of a notorious (but sex-free) scene from Lysistrata should set pulses racing. \nVisit www.ice.cam.ac.uk/aristophanes \nOur weekend courses begin with dinner on Friday and end after lunch the following Sunday. Meals from Madingley Hall’s award-winning kitchen are included in the course fee\, which is £240. However\, teachers from state-funded schools may be eligible for a £100 bursary\, courtesy of Cambridge University Press\, which will reduce the price to £140. \nBed and breakfast at Madingley Hall is available for course weekends for an additional £110\, or £90 per person for two people sharing. \nBookings can be made online\, by emailing admissions@ice.cam.ac.uk or by calling 01223 746262.
