SUMMARY:St Albans Cathedral Latin Summer School
DESCRIPTION:Latin Summer School for beginners and post-beginners \nDates:  Week 1—Monday 28 July-Friday 1 Aug \nWeek 2—Monday 4 Aug-Friday 8 Aug \nTime:  10.00am-4.00pm \nCost:  £120/week (plus students will be asked to purchase a textbook) \nVenue:  St Albans Cathedral Study Centre \nTutor:  Dr Clare Coombe \nOver two weeks\, students will be taken through the fundamentals of Latin grammar\, leading up to reading simple or adapted texts by the end of the second week.  The first week will be suitable for those with little or no Latin\, whereas the second week would be suitable for those with a basic grasp of Latin grammar.  Students may enrol for one or both weeks\, and are encouraged to consult the tutor if they are not sure which level is suitable. \nThe course would provide an ideal basis for anybody who wants to learn Latin to support future studies in Classics\, Theology\, or Medieval Studies\, but is also suitable for those who just want to learn for fun.  During the course\, which is taught in venues in and around the Cathedral\, there will also be opportunities for students to learn a little about the history of the Abbey and the use of Latin in Church\, in these most fitting surroundings! \nThere is no accommodation at the Cathedral\, but if you will require accommodation in St Albans during the Summer School\, please contact us and we will try to assist you. \nFor more information\, see our website:  http://www.stalbanscathedral.org/learning/study-centre/summer-school or email studycentre@stalbanscathedral.org.

SUMMARY:Classical Schools Conference on Lesbos
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to take part in a two-week summer camp in all things classical on the beautiful Greek island of Lesbos? \nRunning from June 29th to July 13th 2014\, this course is being organised by Andrea Portante for selected students of licei classici in Italy (high schools with a certain focus on Classics and classical languages\, philosophy\, and the like). The course is run in conjunction with http://www.hyphenology.com. \nAndrea would like to get in touch with teachers\, professors\, graduate students\, PhD candidates\, who might be interested in preparing and teaching a course/worshop. The topics\, within the general theme of classics\, are open. Proposals are welcome\, based on the interests and passions of the teacher. Favourable are those which have a cross-discipline approach. The important thing\, both for the subject AND the teacher is the ability to stimulate interest and passion. \nThe standard deal is for the teacher to teach ten 90-minute classes and be available for general supervision for an additional hour or two each day. In turn\, we provide air ticket and hospitality for the whole period. \nFor more information\, please contact Andrea Portante (a.portante@gmail.com\, +39 335 5994204).

SUMMARY:The Comedy of Aristophanes
DESCRIPTION:The comedy of Aristophanes – a weekend course from 27–29 June \nThe Greeks invented comedy as well as tragedy\, and we hope\, in a rambunctious\, joke-packed weekend\, to demonstrate how\, in the 5th century BC\, Aristophanes created the hilarious template for the European comic theatre. Students will bring to life splendid scenes from his Wasps\, Women at the Thesmophoria and Frogs. A Saturday-night enactment of a notorious (but sex-free) scene from Lysistrata should set pulses racing. \nVisit www.ice.cam.ac.uk/aristophanes \nOur weekend courses begin with dinner on Friday and end after lunch the following Sunday. Meals from Madingley Hall’s award-winning kitchen are included in the course fee\, which is £240. However\, teachers from state-funded schools may be eligible for a £100 bursary\, courtesy of Cambridge University Press\, which will reduce the price to £140. \nBed and breakfast at Madingley Hall is available for course weekends for an additional £110\, or £90 per person for two people sharing. \nBookings can be made online\, by emailing admissions@ice.cam.ac.uk or by calling 01223 746262.

SUMMARY:Reading Classical Greek
DESCRIPTION:Reading Classical Greek – a weekend course from 16–18 May \nThis series of weekend courses is for those who want to learn Classical Greek. The Beginners’ levels are based on Reading Greek (CUP) (i) Grammar\, Vocabulary and Exercises (ii) Text. Over a series of weekend courses\, students are introduced to the basic elements of grammar through reading passages adapted from ancient Greek authors. At Intermediate level\, students move onto collections of passages selected from major Greek writers\, and finally\, in the Advanced groups\, students read what they choose from the whole of Greek literature. \nPlease note that students who wish to begin studying Greek must attend the November course\, as this is the only weekend suitable for complete beginners. \nVisit www.ice.cam.ac.uk/maygreek \nOur weekend courses begin with dinner on Friday and end after lunch the following Sunday.
