But what were the ancient Olympics really like? How did you get there\, where did you stay and what was the experience on the ground for competitors and spectators? What might you see\, hear\, and think about? What kind of impressions of ancient Greece\, and of the ancient Greeks\, did you come away with? And as a result\, just what real links are there between the ancient and modern Olympics after all?

SUMMARY:A Moot Trial of Boudica: Terrorist or Freedom Fighter? (A Classics for All Event)
DESCRIPTION:A Moot Trial of Boudica: Terrorist or Freedom Fighter? \n\n\n\nLive from the Supreme Court \n\n\n\nThursday 14 October | 18:00 BST \n\n\n\nMother\, daughter\, warrior queen – Boudica stands on trial for terrorism. Her defence is that she is a freedom fighter in a war against foreign invaders. The Roman authorities view her as a  criminal. Will justice be served? Watch the proceedings unfold online and discover a historical heroine whose actions raise urgent questions about imperialism\, war and resistance to foreign occupation that are still relevant today. \n\n\n\nBook tickets here \n\n\n\nBoudica (also known as Boudicca or Boadicea) was Queen of the Iceni tribe in 60/61 BCE when she led a fierce rebellion against Roman rule that sent shockwaves through the empire. Some 18 years after the Roman conquest of Britain\, she succeeded in rallying an army of disaffected Britons to her cause and in destroying three major Roman settlements: Colchester\, London and St Albans. She was by all accounts a formidable leader – both Tacitus and Cassius Dio attribute to Boudica a stirring pre-battle speech – but were her actions those of a terrorist or freedom fighter? \n\n\n\nHer case is listed for hearing at the UK Supreme Court between 6-7:15pm on Thursday 14 October. The prosecution will argue that Boudica was a terrorist\, whose rebellion against Roman rule caused massive loss of life. The defence will argue that she was a freedom fighter in a war: the Romans had no right to be in Britain\, and her brutality was no worse than theirs. A crucial issue will be whether the Roman authorities were the lawful government of Britain in 60/61 CE . \n\n\n\nThe trial of Boudica will be presided over by Lord Stephens (Justice of the Supreme Court and former Lord Justice of Appeal in Northern Ireland) with Alison Morgan QC counsel for the prosecution\, and Thomas Grant QC counsel for the defence. \n\n\n\nTickets to watch the livestream are £10 standard and £5 concession*. You may also choose to give an additional donation toward Classics for All’s work supporting classics teaching in state schools. *Concessionary tickets are available to anyone who is a pensioner\, unemployed or still in full-time education.

SUMMARY:Ancient Greek and Roman Libraries: a Talk by Professor Edith Hall
DESCRIPTION:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/ancient-libraries\n\n \n\nAlthough Mesopotamian civilisations had assembled texts\, the ancient Greeks brought the idea of the universal book collection to its near-legendary consummation in the Library of Alexandria\, which edited and housed thousands of papyrus rolls on every subject and attracted brilliant scholars from all over the ancient world. But there were many other libraries\, serving also as scientific laboratories\, public record offices\, restaurants\, mausoleums and even baths. This illustrated lecture investigates their history and the continuing influence on our modern world.\n\n \n\nWednesday\, 10 November 2021\, 12 noon -1pm Barnard’s Inn Hall  or watch later. Ticketed\, free. NB please note change of time\, starts at noon

SUMMARY:Spartans on the Capitol: Recent Far-Right Uses of Sparta and Their Historical Problems
DESCRIPTION:An online talk by Professor Stephen Hodkinson\, Director of the Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies (University of Nottingham)\n \n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n \nThe Department of Classics at Loughborough Schools Foundation is pleased to invite you to attend the Autumn Term Classics Lecture on Wednesday 17 November at 5pm\, as part of our Classics Lecture Series 2021/22.\n \n\n\n\n \n\nOn 6 January 2021 a crowd of Donald Trump supporters besieged and invaded the U.S. Capitol building. Some of them bore emblems linked to modern images of Sparta as a warrior society. The insurrection was the latest of many recent occasions when the Far Right around the world has invoked Sparta’s martial reputation to add pseudo-historical inspiration and authority to its cause. Professor Stephen Hodkinson’s will illustrate some of these recent Far-Right uses of Sparta and will briefly discuss their historical roots. He will also argue that the real historical Sparta was by no means as militaristic as is normally thought.\n\n \n\nRegister via Eventbrite. Booking will close 24 hours before the event\, and registrants will receive a link to join the online event on Wednesday 17 November\, via their provided email address.\n\n \n\nPlease contact us at lgsclassics@lsf.org if you have any questions.\n\n \n\nThis event is open to all.

Penelope was premièred in the UK on 8 November 2021 to a studio audience at Cazenove Capital\, where it was filmed by Hat Trick Productions. It will be screened online for the first time on 6 December.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening commences with a lively discussion on Penelope in Homer and her reception through the ages\, chaired by Martha Kearney (BBC Radio 4 Today programme) with Sir Tom Stoppard and Dr Emma Greensmith (St John’s College\, Oxford). Stoppard has since experimented with it as a read monodrama\, and as such it will be given its first UK performance in this fundraising event for Classics for All.\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets (£10 standard\, £5 concession) are available via the link below. You may also to choose to give an additional donation toward Classics for All’s work supporting classics teaching in state schools.\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy tickets here\n\n\n\n\n\n*Concessionary tickets are available to anyone who is a pensioner\, unemployed or still in full-time education. Free tickets are available to teachers\, pupils and regional network personnel working with Classics for All’s schools programme. If you are in one of these groups\, please email events@classicsforall.org.uk to apply.\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter you have purchased your ticket(s)\, you will receive an email inviting you to sign up to the Zoom Webinar. SUMMARY:The New Testament from a Roman Perspective with John Davie
DESCRIPTION:From Classics for All…\n\n \n\nThe New Testament from a Roman Perspective with John Davie\n\n \n\nThursday 17 February | 18:00 GMT\n\n \n\nAt the time of Jesus’ birth\, the Roman empire was governed by the emperor Augustus (27 BC – AD 14). The province of Judaea came under direct Roman rule in AD 6 and increasingly strained relations between the Romans and Jewish population had an inevitable influence on the portrayal of events in the Gospels. In this talk\, lecturer John Davie roots the New Testament in its social and political context and shows how a historical approach can help us understand the problems faced by Jewish subjects and Roman authorities alike in Roman Palestine. Covering the political background to Jesus’ life and final days\, the governorship of Pontius Pilate\, and the significance of Jerusalem in Jewish belief\, this wide-ranging talk untangles a pivotal moment in history\, when classical and biblical worlds collide.\n\n \n\nThe first in our series of 2022 Lawyers Group events\, this fascinating talk by lecturer John Davie will be livestreamed from King’s College London via Microsoft Teams and hosted by Sir Rupert Jackson\, Chair of our Lawyers Group Steering Committee.\n\n \n\nTickets (£10 standard\, £5 concession) are available via the link below. You may also to choose to give an additional donation toward Classics for All’s work supporting classics teaching in state schools.\n\n \n\n\n\n \nBuy tickets here\n \n\nThis event will be livestreamed via Microsoft Teams\, but you do not need a Teams account to watch it. After you have purchased your tickets\, you will receive an email containing the link to watch the livestream. Simply click on the link and choose ‘Watch on the web instead’. You will be taken to the livestream webpage where you will see the message ‘The live event hasn’t started’ until the event starts at 6pm.\n\n \n\nJohn Davie:\n\n \n\nJohn Davie is a graduate of Glasgow University and Balliol College\, Oxford\, where he wrote his thesis on Greek Tragedy. For twenty years he held a lectureship at Trinity College\, Oxford\, where he taught undergraduates once a week. He taught Classics at Harrow for nine years and later became Head of Classics at St. Paul’s School\, where he taught until his retirement in 2010. John has translated the complete surviving works of Euripides for Penguin Classics (4 vols) and excerpts from Seneca\, Horace\, and Cicero for Oxford World’s Classics (3 vols). He lives with his wife in South Devon.\n\n \n\nIf you have any queries about this event\, please contact events@classicsforall.org.uk.

SUMMARY:‘Recent discoveries in Pompeii’
DESCRIPTION:It is our aim that all talks will be held at Badminton School\, Peace Memorial Hall. Talks will not be recorded or live streamed. Please email Barbara Bell (bmbellmini@aol.com) to register. There are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. There will be a cost of £5 for visitors. Refreshments available from 6.30pm.\n\n\n\nWednesday 2nd March\, 7pm – Dr Shelley Hales (Bristol)\n\n \n\n‘Recent discoveries in Pompeii’\n\n \n\nAfter years of poor publicity and accusations of mismanagement and neglect aimed at the superintendency at Pompeii\, the new excavations in the city have generated enormous public interest\, positive headlines\, and several internet memes! The combination of the excitement of discovery\, the promise of new technologies to aid excavation and analysis and the novelty of finds fresh from the ground has proved enchanting to the point that this has been seen as Pompeii’s ‘Renaissance’. This talk is an opportunity to take a closer look at the buildings\, objects\, decoration\, and human remains found in Regio V but also to ask whether these excavations are really so different from those of previous generations and what the longer-term consequences might be.

SUMMARY:The Great Gatsby' and 'The Dinner of Trimalchio': Decadence in New York and Ancient Rome\, Dr Emily Pillinger
DESCRIPTION:Key Stage 5 English and Classics KCL Talk – ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘The Dinner of Trimalchio’: Decadence in New York and Ancient Rome\, Dr Emily Pillinger – Thursday 3rd March\, 3-4pm online\n\n \n\nTopic: ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘The Dinner of Trimalchio’: Decadence in New York and Ancient Rome.  This talk shows how one of the greatest loved American novels of the twentieth century emerged from Fitzgerald’s reading of a much less well-known ancient Roman novel by Petronius. It explores how both novels speak to the inequality\, corruption\, and cynicism of their contemporary worlds\, and in the process demonstrates to students that the combined study of English and Classics is a rich and valuable degree focus. There is no need for students to know anything of either works before the talk\, though they may like to read ’The Great Gatsby’ in advance\, or watch the film (dir. B. Luhrmann\, 2013).
