SUMMARY:CLASSICS FOR ALL: Key Stage 3 Classics and English CPD: Using Classical Heroes and Mythology in Key Stage 3 English
DESCRIPTION:CLASSICS FOR ALL: Key Stage 3 Classics and English CPD: Using Classical Heroes and Mythology in Key Stage 3 English\n \nWednesday 24th April 2024\, 4–5pm\, Online\n \n\nAlastair Thorley is an experienced Classics teacher and A Level examiner. He has produced resources for the Classical Association on the Classical Civilisation GCSE syllabus and has trained teachers new to the subject through both Classics For All and Keynote. He also contributed to two of the A Level Classical Civilisation textbooks.\n\n \n\nAlastair has created resources based on the Mary Beard video on “Heroes” and will be discussing how these resources can be used by teachers.\n\n \n\nThe idea of what it means to be a hero is always interesting and endlessly evolving. The media prematurely and ironically announces the death of superhero movies in every weekly review of the latest contributions to the genre in the cinema or on the television. We have been\, are and always will be fascinated by what it takes to be better than ourselves.\n\n \n\nThese resources have been designed to enable pupils to look behind the superhero and consider how these characters are created and made interesting and relatable. Neither the pupils nor the teacher needs to have any knowledge of Classical myths and all are encouraged to draw from their own personal experiences. The myths are told in the form of short\, impactful videos. The resources could lead to the pupils producing a longer piece of creative writing but are also designed to be self-contained.\n\n \n\nTo register for the CPD please complete this form by Monday 22nd April. Zoom details for the event will be sent out on Tuesday 23rd April.

SUMMARY:ELCSS 2-day GCSE Easter Latin Revision Course 2024
DESCRIPTION:Two full days of intensive Latin Language learning and consolidation in direct preparation for the GCSE examinations in the summer. Candidates will be coming to the end of Year 11 and will be readying themselves for examination. We will be revisiting aspects of the language specification that students generally find difficult\, like the indirect statement\, the ablative absolute\, and the uses of the subjunctive. These set-pieces feature in every GCSE examination paper and it is important that the grammatical knowledge of them is secure. We will look at these constructions in isolation\, and then also disguised in unseen passages of Latin\, GCSE past papers\, where they can be more difficult to identify.\n\n \nInformation Brochure\n \n\nBy the end of two days\, students will not only be able to comfortably understand the core linguistic grammatical detail of the Latin syntactical constructions\, but also be able to recognise and translate them with confidence. The course will directly improve public examination performance as they will have readied themselves for the content.\n\n \n\nBook with their online booking form!

SUMMARY:National Latin Spelling Bee 2024
DESCRIPTION:After a long interruption due to Covid\, this unique and exciting event is making its return.\n\n \n\nIt will take place on the 27th March 2024 and last time we had over 25 schools taking place. It will be great to get as many schools as possible on board.\n\n \n\n \n\nWishing to keep it simple\, please see below some of main rules of the competition.\n\n \n\n This event will open for KS3 (ideally Year 7-8) students and promises delightful surprises and valuable prizes from esteemed authors and organizations in the classics field. It is also a day of celebration\, uniting schools in their reverence for Latin.\n \n Each school is required to conduct knock-out rounds within their institutions\, based on vocabulary booklets provided to them. Each school will select the top 5 students who will represent their school in the big final. It is essential to adhere strictly to the specified group number to ensure equitable scoring among all participating schools.\n \n The spelling bee will focus on CLC book 1 and Suburani up to chapter 10. A special vocabulary booklet has been designed and it will be sent to those schools\, once confirmation is received.\n \n Participation fees for each school are set at £35.\n\n \nPlease do not hesitate to reach out to Pantelis Iakovou at p.iakovou@harrischaffordhundred.org.uk if you have any further questions.

SUMMARY:‘How to End a Book According to Ovid’ - Llewelyn Morgan and Bristol CA
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to our first Bristol CA talk for 2024\, which will take place on Wednesday 13th March. Professor Llewelyn Morgan (University of Oxford) will deliver a talk titled ‘How to End a Book According to Ovid’.\n\n \n\nRegistration for this event can be made via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/how-to-end-a-book-according-to-ovid-professor-llewelyn-morgan-oxford-tickets-838689642297\n\n \n\n‘How to End a Book According to Ovid’ – Professor Llewelyn Morgan (University of Oxford)\, 13th March 2024\n\n \n\n \n\nAbout the talk: Ovid’s Metamorphoses is an extremely mischievous poem written by a super-sophisticated poet. One consequence is that we find humour generated in this poem from some quite technical aspects of poetry. How can the way in which the fifteen books start or end be a source of amusement or poetic impact? To discover this is to appreciate the essence of Rome’s most influential (and funniest) poem\, Ovid’s Book of Change.\n\n \n\nAbout the speaker: Llewelyn Morgan is University Lecturer in Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford and Tutorial Fellow in Classics at Brasenose College. He has a special interest in Roman literature\, and has published on Virgil\, Ovid\, Horace\, satire\, historiography and metrical form. SUMMARY:Key Stage 3 History CPD - ‘Why was ‘rex’ such a dirty word in Ancient Rome?’
DESCRIPTION:Key Stage 3 History CPD – ‘Why was ‘rex’ such a dirty word in Ancient Rome?’\n\n \n\nWednesday 28th February 2024\, 4–5pm\, Online\n\n \n\nDelivered by Gem Adams\, and organised by Classics for All (contact anna@classicsforall.org.uk if you have any questions)\n\n \n\nGem Adams is a Head of Classics at a state school in Leeds and is also a former Head of History. Gem has created a Key Stage 3 History scheme of work centred on Ancient Rome. The scheme\, titled “Why was ‘rex’ such a dirty word in Ancient Rome?” explores Roman attitudes to monarchy using source evidence and the scholarship of Mary Beard.\n\n \n\nIn this CPD session\, Gem will discuss the unit\, including introducing students to substantive concepts such as monarchy\, tyranny\, political authority\, and legitimacy. She will explore how we can enhance students’ confidence in reading and engaging with academic scholars\, while also developing their disciplinary knowledge of history. This will involve examining causation\, consequences\, significance\, source interpretation\, and evidential issues.\n\n \n\nGem will support history teachers in developing their own knowledge of Ancient Rome by exploring the core and hinterland knowledge required for this unit. The unit covers Rome’s foundation\, the establishment of the Roman Republic\, the assassination of Julius Caesar\, and the ascent of Augustus as Rome’s first emperor.\n\n \n\nTo register for the CPD please complete this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScNIaOLf5VAvpyxwEnfFm2xxGx8MBIuTwqZPptIBeeDbihmAQ/viewform?usp=sf_link by Friday 23rd February.  Zoom details for the event will be sent out on Tuesday 27th February.
