SUMMARY:Hippolytos at the Cockpit Theatre\, London: 24-7th February
DESCRIPTION:News of this forthcoming production\, from Yana Zarifi-Sistovari\, the Artistic Director… \nThiasos Theatre company is performing the Hippolytos at The Cockpit Theatre in London 24-27th February. \nThe Hippolytos was first presented at the Triennial Classics Conference held at Cambridge University in 1998 and had toured in several countries up to 2004.  This ‘revival’ was prompted by an invitation to Iran’s Fadjr Theatre Festival which was postponed for 2016 (as they did not give us enough time to replace the female singer/dancers of our production with males…).  This production will feature an all dancing/singing chorus (singing in the original Greek)\, an English narration and scenes performed in full (Balinese) masks. \nWe have also been invited to perform in Warsaw and in Gardzienice in Poland this May. \nEdith Hall is appearing in conversation with the Artistic Director (me) on February the 26th after the interval which we hope will attract students and others interested in Greek theatre performance. \nMore information \n

SUMMARY:Tom Holland to speak on the Julio-Claudian court
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 10th February at 4.30 pm\, historian Tom Holland will be speaking on: \n‘Truth and Slander in the Julio-Claudian Court’ \nThe lurid glamour of the Julio-Claudians has resulted in them becoming the very archetypes of feuding and murderous dynasts. No other period of history can compare for sheer unsettling fascination with its gallery of leading characters: Caligula\, Agrippina\, Nero. But are the stories told about them actually true? And why the particular animus that Roman historians seem to have had against powerful women? \nTom Holland is the well-known author of Rubicon\, Persian Fire\, In the Shadow of the Sword and\, most recently\, Dynasty: the Rise and Fall of the House of Caesar. He has adapted Homer\, Herodotus\, Thucydides and Virgil for BBC Radio. Rubicon was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and won the Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History 2004\, and Persian Fire won the Anglo-Hellenic League’s Runciman Award 2006.\n \nThe talk includes some sexual content and may not be suitable for younger pupils. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Singing Hall. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with expected numbers as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday 8th February. \n

SUMMARY:INSET for Classics teachers\, Saturday 6th February 2016\, 9.30 to 4.00
DESCRIPTION:Liverpool College is hosting this one-day event at which we hope to provide a forum for Classics teachers in the North to meet\, enjoy lectures and exchange teaching and learning ideas. \nThe day will be friendly and informal with two short lectures in the morning and two teacher-led workshops in the afternoon. \nOur speakers will be Dr Jason Crowley and Dr April Pudsey\, who run the UK’s newest Ancient History degree programme at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Dr Crowley will speak on Spartan Warfare and Dr Pudsey on Childhood in Roman Egypt. \nOur workshops will be teacher-led; the idea is not to learn from a single expert\, but to share the expertise we already have\, exchanging solutions to common problems and building connections among schools in the region. \nThe exact format and topics of workshops will depend on the number of delegates\, but I envisage arranging them either according to subject matter (language vs civilisation teaching) or popular teaching and learning themes (differentiation\, resources and activities\, new exam preparation\, etc.). I shall canvass opinions at the time of booking. \nThere will be a cost of £12 to cover lunch. If your school cannot cover this or other travel expenses\, please do let me know as we may be able to provide some bursaries. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please contact Joanne McNamara at jmcnamara@liverpoolcollege.org.uk to request a booking form. \n

SUMMARY:Perspectives on Greek History: A Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day on the history of ancient Greece and its teaching
DESCRIPTION:Perspectives on Greek History: \nA Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day on the history of ancient Greece and its teaching \nUniversity of Leeds\, 10am-4pm\, Saturday\, 21st November 2015. \n  \nThe teaching of classical Greek history is rewarding – for both teacher and student — at every level of engagement: it gives its practitioners the opportunity to explore\, within a single historical era\, the workings of exciting subjects like identity\, warfare\, democracy\, and social memory. But it entails also profound challenges: how do we teach the ‘history’ of a period for which the chronology is flimsy and the sources are deeply moralistic\, often fragmentary\, and sometimes intertwined with political and mythographical perspectives? In this INSET day\, lectures and workshops will assess the relationship between Greek literature\, historiography\, political philosophy and history. We will discuss the image of Greek history in modern media; we will\, in association with the Leeds Museum\, explore the perspectives that material evidence can introduce to the study of Greek history. There will also be a forum for discussion of the future of ancient history and the prospects for the new OCR specifications. \nThe event is designed to support those who already teach or would like to teach Greek history topics in the classroom (at any level: Key Stage 2\, GCSE\, A-Level\, Continuing Education)\, and we anticipate that it will offer something to established\, new and prospective teachers of Ancient History and Classical Civilisation. \nRegistration for the event is free\, and includes coffee and lunch. All those who sign up for the event will be required to confirm their attendance at the start of November. Owing to the generosity of Leeds University and the support of the Classical Association Teaching Board\, we are able to offer a small number of (limited) travel bursaries. \nTo register for the even\, please do so electronically: https://greek-history-inset.eventbrite.co.uk/ \nIf you wish to apply for a travel bursary\, please email Dr. Peter Liddel at Peter.Liddel@manchester.ac.uk\, who will supply an application form. The deadline for bursary applications is Thursday October 1st\, and preference will be give to applicants who have no access to institutional support (e.g. from their school or other employer). \n  \nPlenary sessions: \nDr Emma Stafford (University of Leeds): ‘The curse of 300? SUMMARY:Electra: A Production at St Mary's College\, Crosby
DESCRIPTION:News of a forthcoming production… \nWe are setting the play in the slums of New Orleans with a live Jazz band accompanying the Choral Odes and we have been strongly influenced by the horror genre in our approach. \nThe play will be performed at St Mary’s College in Crosby on the 20th November and in the Stanley Theatre at the University of Liverpool on the 23rd November. Please email electra@stmarys.lpool.sch.uk for details. \nI am very confident that bringing students to this play would have a positive effect in the classroom regarding the key themes and the situation on stage. We even have a severed head!
