SUMMARY:UCL Classical Play 2019: Oedipus Rex
DESCRIPTION:New of UCL’s 2019 Classical Play… \nThe UCL Greek and Latin Department and the Bloomsbury Theatre present the Classical Play for 2019: Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex. \nGripped by plague\, the citizens of Thebes petition their king\, Oedipus\, to purify a divine pollution and appease the gods. Yet as he works to uncover the mysteries of a forgotten crime\, the horrifying truth of his own sordid past is brought out into the light for all to see\, and a terrible price is paid. Widely praised as having one of the greatest tragic plots ever written\, this production will recast Sophocles’ ancient masterpiece in a more familiar context\, featuring an original score and translation. Modern audiences will be confronted with the play’s timeless question: what is the cost of truth? \nBook for the lecture taking place before the show on 6th\, 7th & 8th February\, 6-7pm Lecture \nBook for the workshop with renowned director David Stuttard\, taking place on 8th February at 11am-1.30pm Workshop \nFURTHER DETAILS

SUMMARY:The Theatre of Dionysus
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 29 November 2018\, 1 pm at Barnard’s Inn Hall\, London \nThe Theatre of Dionysus https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/theatre-dionysus \nMedea\, Antigone\, Oedipus and Lysistrata – these are just some of the characters from ancient Greek drama who still walk our contemporary stages and haunt our imagination. One of the classical Athenians’ most important inventions was the medium of theatre. From the mid-sixth century BCE they gathered to watch tragedies\, and later comedies in their sanctuary of the wine-god Dionysus on the south slope of the Acropolis. This lecture outlines the origins of Greek drama in this historic setting\, its architectural development and some of the greatest masterpieces.

SUMMARY:Medea in Exile: Origins of a Myth
DESCRIPTION:November 21\, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm\n\n“We think we know Medea\, the scorned lover and her act of monstrous revenge\, but Euripides’ tragedy was just one of approximately 19 classical plays to feature her\, and in antiquity she was also a familiar figure from epic and lyric poetry. \n\n‘Medea in Exile’ features the world premiere of a trilogy of new plays written by Tom Holloway in collaboration with Emma Cole. The staged reading\, directed by Caroline Steinbeis\, blends cutting-edge research into fragmentary plays\, epics\, and vase paintings from antiquity with creative innovation to reconceptualise the ancient heroine Medea. Touching upon Medea’s exile from her homeland\, Corinth\, and Athens\, as well as her relationship with fellow child-killer Herakles\, the project places the ancient and the contemporary in dialogue and shatters our preconceptions about Euripides’ tragic heroine. \nThere will also be a post-show Q&A featuring Cole\, Holloway\, Steinbeis\, and the cast.” \n\nFor FURTHER INFORMATION and TO BOOK

SUMMARY:Initiating Latin at KS 3 (and earlier)
DESCRIPTION:Initiating Latin at KS 3 (and earlier) \nA Classical Association Teaching Board & Manchester Classics for All INSET/CPD \nUniversity of Manchester\, Saturday\, 13th October\, 2018\, 10am-4.30pm \nRegistration and Furthermore Details \nIn recent years\, organisations including Classics for All and the Iris project have enjoyed inspiring success in promoting the learning of Latin at primary and secondary schools where provision of classical languages had been non-existent or endangered. Building on the work of the Manchester Classics for All Project and previous CATB INSET events\, this training day aims to promote the teaching of Latin (and Greek and Classics broadly) at an early stage of the school curriculum\, not only for its own intrinsic interest and importance\, but also for the transferable skills and possibilities that it makes available to young people. The event will appeal to several groups: \n• Schoolteachers of any subjects (humanities and sciences) who are interested in starting up Latin classes in their institutions;\n\n• Schoolteachers who have a desire to learn Latin with a view to introducing it to their schools; no previous knowledge of Latin is required!\n\n• Schoolteachers with experience of the classical teaching(in particular those who specialise in its history and culture) who are hoping to introduce Latin;\n\n• Those teaching – or planning to initiate— pre-GCSE qualifications (OCR ELC; WJEC Level 1 certificate) or extra-curricular classes; at KS3 or earlier\n\n• Anyone who supports the teaching of Latin in schools in any form.\n\nWe anticipate that our event will include lectures on workshops on the following themes: \n• purpose and vision: the value and importance of Latin for underpinning and enhancing other subjects from literacy to science\, and for building young people’s communication skills and hence their self-confidence and aspirations;\n• content and practicalities;\n• Latin teaching at KS 3 and earlier; \n• OCR’s Entry Level Certificate and WJEC Level 1; \n• introductory Latin-learning sessions;\n• methods of teaching Latin and classical pedagogy;\n• regular and special (enrichment) sessions\, during and after school\, on and off timetable lunchtime clubs; after-school events.\n\nSpeakers include: Steve Hunt (Cambridge University); John Taylor (University of Manchester) and other pioneering teachers of languages at KS 3. We hope that the major exam boards and publishers of classical textbooks will be represented at the event; there will be contributions from representatives of schools that have recently initiated Latin classes. \nA registration fee (£4 unwaged; £8 waged) will be levied to cover costs. \nWe gratefully acknowledge the support of Manchester Classics for All\, the University of Manchester and the Classical Association Teaching Board. \nFor more details please contact: peter.liddel@manchester.ac.uk or jessica.coatesworth@manchester.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Supporting Classics in Primary Schools\, Free Event for Teachers
DESCRIPTION:Supporting Classics in Primary Schools \nFree Event for Teachers \nWednesday 10th October\, 5pm-6.30pm \nVenue: The University of Birmingham\, Edgbaston\, B15 2TT \nNow that Latin can be taught as part of the KS2 primary languages curriculum\, an increasing number of schools across the country are using Classics to enrich their busy primary curriculum. \nThe Birmingham and West Midlands Schools Classics Hub welcome teachers\, senior leaders\, and headteachers from the region’s state primary schools to our free information session this October. \nJoin us to find out how schools can access full funding for training and resources to quickly enable non-specialists to teach an ancient language\, as well as ancient history and culture. \nAmong other benefits\, schools find that Latin supports the teaching of literacy for pupils of all abilities\, scaffolds language development for pupils performing below age-related expectations\, and improves attainment in other languages at KS2. \nFor more information and/or to book a place\, please email Polly Stoker: p.stoker@bham.ac.uk by 16th July.
