One consequence is that we find humour generated in this poem from some quite technical aspects of poetry. How can the way in which the fifteen books start or end be a source of amusement or poetic impact? To discover this is to appreciate the essence of Rome’s most influential (and funniest) poem\, Ovid’s Book of Change.\n\n \n\nAbout the speaker: Llewelyn Morgan is University Lecturer in Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford and Tutorial Fellow in Classics at Brasenose College. He has a special interest in Roman literature\, and has published on Virgil\, Ovid\, Horace\, satire\, historiography and metrical form. He also has interests in literature in the reign of the emperor Domitian\, in Central Asia both in antiquity and more recently\, and in Latin literature of the nineteenth century.\n\n \n\nVenue: As in previous years\, the talk will take place in the Peace Memorial Hall at Badminton School\, Westbury Rd\, Bristol BS9 3BA (https://maps.app.goo.gl/icdzFHE6RecbRBgW8).\n\n \n\nTickets: There is no charge for registering via Eventbrite\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. This discussion will face forwards to the course’s development and reflect on ways to best support departments in using de Romanis and how to develop the course further.

DESCRIPTION:Key Stage 3 History CPD – ‘Why was ‘rex’ such a dirty word in Ancient Rome?’\n\n \n\nWednesday 28th February 2024\, 4–5pm\, Online\n\n \n\nDelivered by Gem Adams\, and organised by Classics for All (contact anna@classicsforall.org.uk if you have any questions)\n\n \n\nGem Adams is a Head of Classics at a state school in Leeds and is also a former Head of History. Gem has created a Key Stage 3 History scheme of work centred on Ancient Rome. The scheme\, titled “Why was ‘rex’ such a dirty word in Ancient Rome?” explores Roman attitudes to monarchy using source evidence and the scholarship of Mary Beard.\n\n \n\nIn this CPD session\, Gem will discuss the unit\, including introducing students to substantive concepts such as monarchy\, tyranny\, political authority\, and legitimacy. She will explore how we can enhance students’ confidence in reading and engaging with academic scholars\, while also developing their disciplinary knowledge of history. This will involve examining causation\, consequences\, significance\, source interpretation\, and evidential issues.\n\n \n\nGem will support history teachers in developing their own knowledge of Ancient Rome by exploring the core and hinterland knowledge required for this unit. DESCRIPTION:WARWICK\nANCIENT DRAMA FESTIVAL\n  \n\nAeschylus The Persians\n25-26 JANUARY 2024\n  \n\nGenerously funded by the British Academy\n \n\nWe are pleased to announce that the Warwick Ancient Drama Festival will return in January 2024. After Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex in 2020\, Euripides’ Bacchae in 2022\, and Aristophanes’ Assemblywomen in 2023\, this year will see Aeschylus’ Warwick debut. The Department of Classics and Ancient History would like to invite students and teachers to enjoy a performance of *The Persians*\, the earliest surviving Greek tragedy and the only one to draw its plot from historical events\, together with assorted talks and lectures from scholars of Greek drama.\n\n \n\nThe festival will take place on the 25th and the 26th January 2024\, with the 26th January specifically dedicated to schools. The play itself\, presented in the newly-renovated theatre of the Warwick Arts Centre\, will be directed and produced by the Classics students at Warwick – follow them at https://www.instagram.com/warwickclassicsplay/?hl=en.\n\n \n\nThere will be three performances: one on Thursday 25th January\, at 7.00pm\, and two on Friday 26th January (3.30pm\, 7.00pm). The performance on Thursday 25th January will be preceded (at 6.00pm) by a public lecture given by Dr Emmanuela Bakola\, titled ‘Watching Aeschylus’ Persians in performance’. Tickets for individual bookings for the Thursday and the Friday evening performances are priced at £6\, and are available for booking  https://www.warwickartscentre.co.uk/whats-on/3yj-aeschylus-the-persians/\n\n \n\nSupporting the matinee performance on Friday 26th (3.30pm)\, the Department is offering a series of lectures\, discussions\, and seminars specifically for school students\, and designed to link in with Greek\, Classical Civilisation\, Ancient History\, Drama\, and English syllabuses at GCSE and A-Level. However\, no previous knowledge of the play or subject area will be expected.\n\n \n\nAll participants will be able to attend two introductory 20-minute lectures in the morning (11.00):\n\n \n\n 	Dr Emmanuela Bakola\, ’Introduction to Greek theatre and festivals’\n \n 	Dr Paul Grigsby\, ‘The historical context of Aeschylus’ Persians’\n\n \n\nThese will be followed by a selection of talks running simultaneously\, and repeated in two sessions (12.15-13.00 and 14.00-14.45):\n\n \n\n 	Dr Xavier Buxton\, ‘Fear and the feminine in Aeschylus’ Persians’\n \n 	Professor David Fearn\, ‘How do we talk about the imagery of Aeschylus?’ (seminar)\n \n 	Dr Emmanuela Bakola ‘Watching Aeschylus’ Persians in performance’\n\n \n\nThe matinee performance is at 15.30. This will be followed (at around 17.30) by a Q&A with the director and producer of the play.\n\n \n\nIn addition\, Professor Margaret Miller (author of the seminal Athens and Persia in the Fifth Century B.C.: A Study in Cultural Receptivity) will offer a 30-min videorecorded talk on the Greek imagination of the Persians with evidence from iconography and material culture\, which teachers and pupils can watch in their own time.\n\n \n\nThe Schools Day\, including the performance\, is FREE\, but attendees are asked to organise their own transportation and lunch. If you wish to book your pupils for this day\, please email me (xavier.buxton@warwick.ac.uk)\, declaring\n\n \n\n 	the number of participants\, including teachers\n \n 	which of the afternoon talks you wish your pupils to attend.\n\n \n\n*Please do not over-estimate student numbers.* It has been frustrating\, in previous years\, to see empty seats at this over-subscribed event.\n\n \n\nThe Schools Day will become fully booked very quickly. We will operate a waiting list for those schools who apply after the booking limit has been reached. If the the matinee performance is full\, or not convenient\, schools may instead book for the evening performances on Thursday 25th (7.00 pm)\, or Friday 26th (7.00pm). Tickets for both these performances (normally £6) will have 50% discount for school groups\, and booking will commence on the 25th October. DESCRIPTION:Saturday 20th January 2024 Room G22/26 \, South Block\, Senate House\, Malet Street\, London \n\n\n\n11:00 a.m.  Welcome (Alice Bolland\, South Hampstead High School) \n\n\n\n\n\n11:15 a.m.  GCSE Latin \n\n\n\nDr Jean-Michel Hulls (Dulwich College) \n\n\n\n‘Learning about the Roman (under)world with Aeneas’\n\n\n\nThe GCSE prescription of Aeneid 6 is (unavoidably) selective\, leaving out more of Virgil’s complex underworld narrative than it includes. By looking at the text in the round\, we can see that the experience was equally tricky for Virgil’s contemporary audience\, and for Aeneas himself. Unpicking some of the hero’s confusion can help us understand the history\, philosophy and literature behind Book 6. \n\n\n\n\n\n2:15 p.m.  A-level Classical Civilisation (“The World of the Hero”) \n\n\n\nDr Niki Karapanagioti (Oxford High School GDST) \n\n\n\n‘Women in Homer and Virgil: Symbols of a hero’s achievements or co-heroes?’\n\n\n\nThe talk is going to focus on mortal women in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and in Virgil’s Aeneid. It will discuss the mortal women’s appearance in the narrative as victims of men’s pursuit of glory\, fame and honour. But it is also going to try and identify places in all three epics where women are presented in a more positive light\, taking on traits associated with the role of a hero. \n\n\n\n\n\n3:00 p.m.   A-level Latin \n\n\n\nDr Luke Houghton (Queen’s College London / UCL\, Royal Holloway) \n\n\n\n‘Character\, rhetoric\, and description in Aeneid 12’\n\n\n\nHow do you end a story with a predetermined outcome? How can you create tension and hold readers’ attention and interest when significant elements in your plotline have already been infallibly foretold earlier in the narrative? Through close reading of the text of Aeneid 12\, this talk illustrates some of the ways in which Virgil attempts to ensure that his readers remain invested in his characters and their fate even as the overarching course of Roman destiny works itself out over the final book of the poem. \n\n\n\nAttendees are welcome to attend any or all of the talks. Lunch will not be provided\, but light refreshments (tea\, coffee\, biscuits) will be available.
