SUMMARY:Queens of Syria Screening: free for sixth form students and their teachers
DESCRIPTION:Queens of Syria Screening: free for sixth form students and their teachers \nOn Thursday 18th October at 7pm\, Godolphin and Latymer School will be hosting an event to tell the story of ‘Queens of Syria’\, the project in which a number of Syrian refugee women put on their own version of Euripides’ Trojan Women. The evening will start with a screening of the award-winning 70 minute documentary about the project\, and this will be followed by a question and answer panel consisting of one of the actors\, the executive producers\, and an academic classicist. You can see a three minute trailer of the documentary here: https://vimeo.com/86996865 \nAlthough this event is a fundraiser which is ticketed for members of the public (£15)\, we are making it free to all sixth form school pupils and accompanying teachers. If you would be interested in bringing a group to this event (or of sending pupils unaccompanied\, which is fine)\, please email James Renshaw: jrenshaw@godolphinandlatymer.com. We do need a list of students’ names in advance. Please do encourage your students to come\, it should be a wonderful opportunity for students of any classical subject at A Level.

SUMMARY:Bacchae at Woodford County High School
DESCRIPTION:A student (Years 9-12) production of Bacchae will be performed at Woodford County High School (High Road\, Woodford Green\, IG8 9LA (North-east London)) in our Greek Theatre. It is happening on October 17th at 17:30 and ending around 18:30 with refreshments provided post-performance. We are using the Almeida Theatre’s version of the play (the one with Ben Whishaw as Dionysus)\, which has been well edited by a drama teacher from the Globe Theatre\, who is also directing the production. It will be very suitable as consolidation for those currently studying the play for the OCR Classical Civilisation A Level\, as well as those who are unfamiliar with Greek tragedy. \nIf you are interested in coming\, email the number of students and teachers you will be bringing to the following address: mcclellandj@woodford.redbridge.sch.uk \n \n

SUMMARY:Initiating Latin at KS 3 (and earlier)
DESCRIPTION:Initiating Latin at KS 3 (and earlier) \nA Classical Association Teaching Board & Manchester Classics for All INSET/CPD \nUniversity of Manchester\, Saturday\, 13th October\, 2018\, 10am-4.30pm \nRegistration and Furthermore Details \nIn recent years\, organisations including Classics for All and the Iris project have enjoyed inspiring success in promoting the learning of Latin at primary and secondary schools where provision of classical languages had been non-existent or endangered. Building on the work of the Manchester Classics for All Project and previous CATB INSET events\, this training day aims to promote the teaching of Latin (and Greek and Classics broadly) at an early stage of the school curriculum\, not only for its own intrinsic interest and importance\, but also for the transferable skills and possibilities that it makes available to young people. The event will appeal to several groups: \n• Schoolteachers of any subjects (humanities and sciences) who are interested in starting up Latin classes in their institutions;\n\n• Schoolteachers who have a desire to learn Latin with a view to introducing it to their schools; no previous knowledge of Latin is required!\n\n• Schoolteachers with experience of the classical teaching(in particular those who specialise in its history and culture) who are hoping to introduce Latin;\n\n• Those teaching – or planning to initiate— pre-GCSE qualifications (OCR ELC; WJEC Level 1 certificate) or extra-curricular classes; at KS3 or earlier\n\n• Anyone who supports the teaching of Latin in schools in any form.\n\nWe anticipate that our event will include lectures on workshops on the following themes: \n• purpose and vision: the value and importance of Latin for underpinning and enhancing other subjects from literacy to science\, and for building young people’s communication skills and hence their self-confidence and aspirations;\n• content and practicalities;\n• Latin teaching at KS 3 and earlier; \n• OCR’s Entry Level Certificate and WJEC Level 1; \n• introductory Latin-learning sessions;\n• methods of teaching Latin and classical pedagogy;\n• regular and special (enrichment) sessions\, during and after school\, on and off timetable lunchtime clubs; after-school events.\n\nSpeakers include: Steve Hunt (Cambridge University); John Taylor (University of Manchester) and other pioneering teachers of languages at KS 3. We hope that the major exam boards and publishers of classical textbooks will be represented at the event; there will be contributions from representatives of schools that have recently initiated Latin classes. \nA registration fee (£4 unwaged; £8 waged) will be levied to cover costs. \nWe gratefully acknowledge the support of Manchester Classics for All\, the University of Manchester and the Classical Association Teaching Board. \nFor more details please contact: peter.liddel@manchester.ac.uk or jessica.coatesworth@manchester.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Supporting Classics in Primary Schools\, Free Event for Teachers
DESCRIPTION:Supporting Classics in Primary Schools \nFree Event for Teachers \nWednesday 10th October\, 5pm-6.30pm \nVenue: The University of Birmingham\, Edgbaston\, B15 2TT \nNow that Latin can be taught as part of the KS2 primary languages curriculum\, an increasing number of schools across the country are using Classics to enrich their busy primary curriculum. \nThe Birmingham and West Midlands Schools Classics Hub welcome teachers\, senior leaders\, and headteachers from the region’s state primary schools to our free information session this October. \nJoin us to find out how schools can access full funding for training and resources to quickly enable non-specialists to teach an ancient language\, as well as ancient history and culture. \nAmong other benefits\, schools find that Latin supports the teaching of literacy for pupils of all abilities\, scaffolds language development for pupils performing below age-related expectations\, and improves attainment in other languages at KS2. \nFor more information and/or to book a place\, please email Polly Stoker: p.stoker@bham.ac.uk by 16th July.

SUMMARY:Oxford Outreach Lecture "Language Learning Across Language\, Culture and Time" Thursday 27th September 4:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Northampton High School are fortunate to be hosting Dr. Philomen Probert from Oxford’s Classics Faculty on Thursday 27th September at 4:30pm as part of our programme of events celebrating European Day of Languages. Her talk\, part of the Outreach programme\, is entitled “Language Learning Across Language\, Culture and Time”\, and promises to be of interest to anyone who is learning a foreign language. \n“When we learn languages we often find some things harder than others. For example\, the distinction between masculine and feminine nouns in French is difficult for English speakers\, but basic French word order is a bit easier. The use of the English word ‘the’ is very difficult for Russian speakers\, but a bit easier for French speakers. (English spelling is difficult for everybody…) For these reasons\, different techniques are used for teaching different languages and to different groups of people. Yet tools and techniques for language teaching have also influenced one another across languages and cultures. By exploring historical language teaching and learning techniques in western Europe\, this talk aims to enrich the intrinsic interest of language teaching and learning itself.” \nFree event\, with refreshments from 4pm: all welcome. Please circulate to interested parties. Contact 01604 765765 or email admin@nhs.gdst.net to reserve places; email k.mason@nhs.gdst.net for more information.

SUMMARY:Free training course in Latin and Greek (Classics for All)
DESCRIPTION:From Classics for All… \nFollowing the success of the free training course in Latin and Greek that we ran for teachers in October 2017 at Harrow School\, we are proposing to run the course again this summer and would like to gauge initial interest. \nHarrow School has kindly offered us the use of their facilities between Tuesday 28th – Thursday 30th August 2018 and therefore we propose to run a 2 – 2.5 day course during this time period. \nGroups\nDepending on interest levels\, we plan to offer separate groups for those interested in the following: \n\nBeginners Latin (Cambridge Latin Course Book 1)\nIntermediate Latin (up to GCSE level)\nBeginners Greek (John Taylor Greek to GCSE Book 1)\nIntermediate Greek (for those with some existing knowledge of Greek\, focusing more on GCSE level language content)\n\nThe training course is open to all teachers in state secondary schools in England or Wales. Whether you are interested in introducing Latin or Ancient Greek into your school for the first time\, or whether you would like to consolidate your own linguistic understanding to support what you currently teach\, we hope that this free training opportunity will prove invaluable. \nThe information above provides a rough guide to the content that we propose to cover in each group but this is extremely flexible. We are keen to ensure that these courses are as beneficial as possible to those who attend and therefore we will tailor the exact structure and content of each class in response to need. \nThe sessions will be led by a subject specialist from Harrow School and by experienced trainers from Classics for All. Group sizes will be kept small to allow for maximum progress. \nCosts\nThe course is free to attend and lunch will also be provided free of charge. For those travelling from further afield and/or for those whose schools are unable cover the costs\, Classics for All may be able to offer some discretionary funding towards accommodation and travel expenses. \nWhat next?\nIn order to help us gauge initial levels of interest\, please complete this short online form by 25th May if you are interested in coming on the course. By completing this form\, you are NOT committing to anything at this stage – we’re just trying to ascertain how many people might be interested in attending and at what level.

SUMMARY:UCL Summer School in Homer

The course will comprise of three days of classes (between 10.30 a.m. and 4 p.m.) and two days of archaeological visits\, as well as lectures and screenings in the evenings. Travel and accommodation should be independently arranged. \nThe Summer School offers five days of intensive teaching in Homer. There are five language and literature classes each day (between 10.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.) as well as lectures and other events after the classes. The fee is £120. The course is not residential. As far as possible\, groups comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, and they will find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. Some classes concentrate chiefly on reading texts\, while others offer a mixture of grammar and translation or commentary practice. Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Homer in the London area and beyond. \nThe Summer School in Homer will cater for a wide range of interests. It is expected that a substantial number of students from both schools and universities will apply\, but also mature students who wish to learn Homeric Greek or learn more about the Homeric world. Our principal concern is to provide a thorough programme of language and literature learning in a lively university environment. \nCultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus\nSunday 28 July to Thursday 2 August 2018\nNew for 2018\, the Summer School is offering the exciting opportunity to study Homer at the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus. SUMMARY:Classical Mythology and Creative writing at KS2 and KS3: FREE CPD for teachers
DESCRIPTION:From Classics for All… \nClassical Mythology and Creative writing at KS2 and KS3\nFREE CPD for teachers\, Thursday 5th July at UCL – exact time to be confirmed \n\nAward-winning children’s author\, Philip Womack\, will use some of his classically inspired young people’s fiction to explore  the value of mythology as a springboard for creative writing. \nIf you would like to register your interest for this event click here. Look out for further details of this event in emails from me.  It promises to be an engaging and lively afternoon. \n“Ever since I can remember\, I have loved the classics\, starting with the Usborne story of Bellerophon and Pegasus\, and continuing on into the Iliad and beyond. Classical myth is the basis for so much of what is around us: so many writers of all kinds continue to work with myth. Only recently we have had Colm Toibin’s The House of Names (about Orestes)\, and Madeleine Miller’s The Song of Achilles. \nIn this session I will discuss my passion for Classics and classical myth\, introducing you to three works which are based on the myths of Bacchus\, the Minotaur\, and of the Trojan War\, sometimes in unusual and surprising ways. We will engage with creative writing exercises which you can deploy with your students at Key Stages 2 and 3\, and we will discuss ways that you can use myth (and language)  in the classroom and across the curriculum. We will look at the wealth of options available for your next steps\, from useful and entertaining interpretations to the source materials themselves. This will be an exciting and stimulating event which will help to raise the profile and enjoyment of classics in your schools.”
