The cost of the day will be £10 per pupil attending. \nWe hope many of you will be able to come this year for what looks to be an excellent day. If you wish to come\, please reply with the number of pupils you are bringing to Mrs Jeannie Cohen at jeannie.cohen@fhs-nw1.org.uk. SUMMARY:Ancient and Modern Science Competition for Primary and Secondary Schools
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be announcing a science competition for primary and secondary schools to celebrate our forthcoming Ancient and Modern Science festival (http://eoccc.org.uk/the-iris-festival-of-ancient-and-modern-science)! \nOn February 7th 2017\, we are delighted to be holding the Iris Festival of Ancient and Modern Science at Cheney School! The Festival will feature many different areas of science\, with speakers such as Professor Robert Winston and Professor Anthony Grayling\, and a very wide range of activities\, stalls\, performances\, exhibitions and displays. \nTo encourage the widest possible engagement with this event\, we are launching an exciting competition for primary and secondary schools. There are two different categories: \n1. Individual display: individual school students are invited to design a poster of any size which explores a particular aspect of science. We are especially interested in posters which connect ancient and modern themes or ideas. All posters submitted with be displayed at the festival itself\, and five winners will be selected for prizes (entries will be split according to age)\, which will be announced at the festival. \n2. Activity and/or information stall: primary and secondary school groups are invited to design an activity and/or information stall to run at the festival. It can be on any aspect of science. We are looking especially for stalls which connect ancient and modern themes of ideas. You will need to submit your stall idea to us\, and then we will select the ten best ideas to take part in the festival itself. All ten selected will receive a group prize and a visit from our speakers\, who will each have a tour of the festival in action. \nThe deadline for activity stall pitches from schools is December 14th\, 2016. Please email ideas to info@irisproject.org.uk You will be contacted by January 3rd if your idea is successful\, and we will provide you table space at the festival. We expect that a member of your school staff will assist with running the stall\, with up to six student representatives (these can swap in and out throughout the festival). \nThe deadline for posters is January 7th\, 2017. Posters should be submitted either electronically to info@irisproject.org.uk or by post to Cheney School\, Cheney Lane\, Oxford OX3 8PL. Please include your name\, school\, age and an email address that we can reach you on. \nhttp://tinyurl.com/j2pdp34 \n

SUMMARY:Talk on Latin and English poetry in the 17th century
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 27th February at 4.30 pm\, Dr Victoria Moul will be speaking on: \n‘Latin and English poetry in the 17th century’ \nDr Moul will talk about the bilingualism of literary culture in this period – the extent to which poetry was being written as well as read in both Latin and English throughout the 17th century\, and the importance of an appreciation of Latin literary culture for any full understanding of English poetry throughout this period. She will look in particular at why and how people chose to write in Latin or English\, and the ways in which translation and imitation from one language to another shaped poetry in both. \nDr Moul is Senior Lecturer in Latin Language and Literature at King’s College\, London. She has a particular interest in early modern English reception of classical literature. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 24th February. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance.

SUMMARY:Studying Ancient Egypt & Mesopotamia at University
DESCRIPTION:Studying Ancient Egypt & Mesopotamia at University\nSaturday\, 4 March\n09:30-17:00\nRoyal Asiatic Society and British Museum\, London\n \nEgypt and Mesopotamia (modern Iraq; ancient Sumer\, Assyria and Babylon) bequeathed to posterity some of the most fascinating remains from all of the ancient world. Today it is possible to learn the languages\, study the artefacts\, and reconstruct the most varied aspects of these ancient civilisations in astonishing detail. \nBut since these subjects are not offered at A level\, few sixth-formers are aware that they exist as University subjects; indeed\, many A-level students might never have had the opportunity to learn about these cultures. \nThe purpose of this one-day conference is to give sixth-formers an opportunity to explore what it is like to study Egypt and Mesopotamia at British Universities: to see what makes the subject area so intellectually and culturally exciting\, learn about the various degree courses\, and understand what admissions tutors are looking for. \nThe programme will include talks about careers\, information on admissions\, and the opportunity to meet current students and academic staff from many of the institutions in the UK that teach these subjects\, including: Cambridge\, Oxford\, Liverpool\, Swansea\, Durham\, Cardiff\, Birmingham\, Reading and SOAS. There will also be gallery tours at the British Museum (led by current staff and students) and sample lectures. \nTeachers are welcome to bring groups\, but individual students are equally welcome. This is\, in essence\, a nation-wide Open Day for the subject area at large. \n*Attendance is free. \nAttendance is free\, but booking is essential as spaces are limited. You can book your space via the following link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/studying-ancient-egypt-mesopotamia-at-university-tickets-30585618408 \nThe event is organised by the Division of Archaeology\, University of Cambridge\, in partnership with the Royal Asiatic Society and the British Museum. Further details of the day\, including the provisional programme can be found at: http://www.arch.cam.ac.uk/prospective-students/undergraduates/OpenDaysAndOutreachEvents/EgyptandMesopotamiaConference2017 \n \nTravel bursaries \n*Applications for travel bursaries are NOW OPEN. \nThanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor and the Thriplow Charitable Trust\, we are able to offer c. 15 travel bursaries of up to c. 50 pounds each\, to enable sixth formers at state schools to attend the Conference. \nThe bursaries are administered by the Division of Archaeology\, University of Cambridge. To apply\, 1) write to Dr Martin Worthington (mjw65@cam.ac.uk) by 12 February\, stating where you will be travelling from\, by which means of transport\, and the estimated cost; also include (in the text of the email or as a PDF attachment) a 250-word statement on your interest in the subject area (it may include illustrations\, but need not); 2) ask a teacher or equivalent (e.g. a museum curator; not a parent) to send a reference which comments on your academic ability and enthusiasm to the same email address\, by the same deadline. \nBursaries will normally be payable on the day itself\, in person. If this creates problems\, please let us know when you apply. \nAddress any queries to: Dr Martin Worthington (mjw65@cam.ac.uk) or Laure Bonner (lmb97@cam.ac.uk)

SUMMARY:Bristol Classics Hub: GCSE and A Level Classical Civilisation Study Day
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 20th March 2017\, the Bristol Classics Hub will be hosting a Classical Civilisation Study Day at the University of Bristol for GCSE and A Level students. There will be four sessions during the day on the following topics: \n\nSex and Gender in the Ancient World\nAugustus and The Aeneid\nGreek Tragedy\nHomer’s Odyssey\n\nEach session will be divided into two halves: for the first 30 minutes\, an academic from the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Bristol will deliver an engaging\, accessible lecture on the topic. In the second half\, current undergraduate and postgraduate Classics students will facilitate interactive sessions which will enable more in-depth discussion of questions raised in the lectures. The sessions will be accessible even to those who have not studied a particular topic before. \nThe study day will run from 10am until 3pm and there is no cost to attend. There will be refreshments during the two breaks but lunch will not be provided. Students will be able to eat their own packed lunch in the conference rooms. \nDuring the second session of the day\, Alex Orgee from OCR Classics will be delivering some training for teachers. This will focus on the changes to Classics and Ancient History examination specifications and will be particularly useful for those schools transitioning from AQA to OCR Classical Civilisation. University of Bristol tutors will also be present throughout the day to answer any questions you may have about the university application process or about EPQ support. You might also like to take the chance to network with other professionals engaged in Classics outreach and teaching. \nFor further details about this event\, please visit our website http://www.bristol.ac.uk/classics/hub/events/. If you have any questions or would like to book student places for the study day\, please contact Hannah Walsh: h.walsh@bristol.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to the Presocratics
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 20th March at 4.30 pm\, Dr Tom Mackenzie will be speaking on: \n‘The First Philosophers? An Introduction to the Presocratics’ \nHistories of Western philosophy tend to start with the archaic Greek thinkers known as the Presocratics. Yet their theories (as far as we can reconstruct them from the few surviving fragments of their work) concern very different topics from what we would expect of philosophers today. In this talk\, Dr Mackenzie will provide an overview of some of the key figures within this group (Thales\, Anaximander\, Xenophanes\, Heraclitus\, Parmenides\, Zeno\, Empedocles\, Democritus)\, address some of the problems in trying to reconstruct their thought\, and explore some respects in which the label of ‘Philosophy’ both is and is not fitting for their work. \nDr Mackenzie is A G Leventis Research Fellow at University College\, London\, and the Presocratics are one of his specialisms. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 17th March. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance\, and that all adults attending should bring a form of photo ID.
