DESCRIPTION:“Today has taught me that Greek theatre is still just as important in today’s society.” “Well done to all involved -­ the students said they haven’t laughed so much in ages!”\nTestimonial from students attending the Ancient Drama Day \nThe students and staff at the University of Warwick Department of Classics would like to invite teachers and students to our annual ancient drama day for schools on Monday 25th January 2016.  \nThe day will focus around a special schools’ performance of Aristophanes Lysistrata\, produced and directed by the Classics students at Warwick (translated into English by Clive Letchford\, Teaching Fellow in the department)\, to be performed in the main theatre of Warwick University’s prestigious Arts Centre. \nSupporting the performance\, we are organising a series of lectures and seminars specifically for school students to link in with Latin\, Greek\, Classical Civilisation\, Ancient History\, Drama and English syllabuses at GCSE and AS/A2 (no previous knowledge of the subject area or play will be expected). These include: \n  \n–   An introduction to the world of ancient theatre\n–   An examination of the main themes of the Lysistrata\n–   An investigation into the experience of ancient drama\n–   Close analysis of several ancient comedies and their relationship to tragedy\n–   An investigation into the issues of sex and gender raised by the play\n–   An investigation into the political and historical circumstances surrounding the production of the play\n–   A workshop on the problems and opportunities of producing ancient drama in the modern era \nThe day will begin at 11am and finish at 5pm. Detailed timings will be announced in due course. DESCRIPTION:On 18th January 2016\, 3.30 – 7pm\, the East Oxford Community Classics Centre is holding a Festival of Ancient Cities on Monday 18th January. This event is a celebration of the great classical cities\, and areas of the school will be themed on different ancient sites! All visitors will be given a passport which they can get stamped for visiting the different regions\, and will also be able to follow our artefact treasure trails across the school. \nAll ages are most welcome to attend – there will be activities and events suitable for every age range. \nFrom 3.30 – 5.45pm there will be activities\, stalls and exhibitions\, a walk-through lost cities exhibition in the Library and the opportunity to see our artefact mural trails. DESCRIPTION:Perspectives on Greek History: \nA Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day on the history of ancient Greece and its teaching \nUniversity of Leeds\, 10am-4pm\, Saturday\, 21st November 2015. \n  \nThe teaching of classical Greek history is rewarding – for both teacher and student — at every level of engagement: it gives its practitioners the opportunity to explore\, within a single historical era\, the workings of exciting subjects like identity\, warfare\, democracy\, and social memory. But it entails also profound challenges: how do we teach the ‘history’ of a period for which the chronology is flimsy and the sources are deeply moralistic\, often fragmentary\, and sometimes intertwined with political and mythographical perspectives? In this INSET day\, lectures and workshops will assess the relationship between Greek literature\, historiography\, political philosophy and history. We will discuss the image of Greek history in modern media; we will\, in association with the Leeds Museum\, explore the perspectives that material evidence can introduce to the study of Greek history. There will also be a forum for discussion of the future of ancient history and the prospects for the new OCR specifications. \nThe event is designed to support those who already teach or would like to teach Greek history topics in the classroom (at any level: Key Stage 2\, GCSE\, A-Level\, Continuing Education)\, and we anticipate that it will offer something to established\, new and prospective teachers of Ancient History and Classical Civilisation. \nRegistration for the event is free\, and includes coffee and lunch. All those who sign up for the event will be required to confirm their attendance at the start of November. DESCRIPTION:News of a forthcoming production… \nWe are setting the play in the slums of New Orleans with a live Jazz band accompanying the Choral Odes and we have been strongly influenced by the horror genre in our approach. \nThe play will be performed at St Mary’s College in Crosby on the 20th November and in the Stanley Theatre at the University of Liverpool on the 23rd November. DESCRIPTION:On Monday 16th November at 4.30 pm\, Dr Rupert Thompson will be speaking on: \n‘Why Greek is still a living language and Latin isn’t’ \nLatin is universally held to be a ‘dead language’\, but Greek has since antiquity been the language of the Hellenic people and remains the official language of Greece and Cyprus to the present day. What is meant by a ‘dead language’? How do languages ‘die’? And what accounts for the different fates of Latin and Greek? \nRupert Thompson is Lecturer in Classics (Philology and Linguistics) and Fellow of Selwyn College\, Cambridge. He has a particular interest in historical and comparative linguistics. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 14th October at 4.30 pm\, Dr Fiachra Mac Góráin will be speaking on: \n‘Time and memory in Aeneid 6’ \nBook 6 is often regarded as the keystone of the Aeneid. During his descent to the Underworld Aeneas processes traumatic memories from the past in order to face both his and the Romans’ future. The most obvious memories in play are on the level of human experience\, those of Aeneas\, Dido\, Deiphobus\, etc.\, but equally important to the book is Roman memory of historical experience and the sometimes problematic course of empire\, and the memory of the literary past\, from Homer to Catullus. \nDr Mac Góráin is Lecturer in Classics at University College\, London. He specialises in Augustan poetry\, and Virgil in particular. He is currently writing a book\, to be entitled ‘Virgil’s Dionysus’. \nAeneid 6 is a current A-level set text; the talk will also be of interest to pupils who wish to improve their background knowledge of Virgil. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Singing Hall. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. DESCRIPTION:The Birmingham and Midlands Classical Association would like to invite you to this year’s Autumn Lecture on Thursday 1 October at 5.30pm in the Arts Building\, on the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston Campus. \nProfessor Catharine Edwards (Birkbeck) will be speaking on ‘Representing Roman imperial women: family resemblance among the Julio-Claudians‘ and it promises to be a very interesting and informative evening.  \nBooking is not required\, but schools and individuals do need to be members of the BMCA.
