SUMMARY:Warwick Ancient Drama Festival 2024: Aeschylus' The Persians
DESCRIPTION:WARWICK\nANCIENT DRAMA FESTIVAL\n \n\nAeschylus The Persians\n25-26 JANUARY 2024\n \n\nGenerously funded by the British Academy\n \n\nWe are pleased to announce that the Warwick Ancient Drama Festival will return in January 2024. After Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex in 2020\, Euripides’ Bacchae in 2022\, and Aristophanes’ Assemblywomen in 2023\, this year will see Aeschylus’ Warwick debut. The Department of Classics and Ancient History would like to invite students and teachers to enjoy a performance of *The Persians*\, the earliest surviving Greek tragedy and the only one to draw its plot from historical events\, together with assorted talks and lectures from scholars of Greek drama.\n\n \n\nThe festival will take place on the 25th and the 26th January 2024\, with the 26th January specifically dedicated to schools. The play itself\, presented in the newly-renovated theatre of the Warwick Arts Centre\, will be directed and produced by the Classics students at Warwick – follow them at https://www.instagram.com/warwickclassicsplay/?hl=en.\n\n \n\nThere will be three performances: one on Thursday 25th January\, at 7.00pm\, and two on Friday 26th January (3.30pm\, 7.00pm). The performance on Thursday 25th January will be preceded (at 6.00pm) by a public lecture given by Dr Emmanuela Bakola\, titled ‘Watching Aeschylus’ Persians in performance’. Tickets for individual bookings for the Thursday and the Friday evening performances are priced at £6\, and are available for booking  https://www.warwickartscentre.co.uk/whats-on/3yj-aeschylus-the-persians/\n\n \n\nSupporting the matinee performance on Friday 26th (3.30pm)\, the Department is offering a series of lectures\, discussions\, and seminars specifically for school students\, and designed to link in with Greek\, Classical Civilisation\, Ancient History\, Drama\, and English syllabuses at GCSE and A-Level. However\, no previous knowledge of the play or subject area will be expected.\n\n \n\nAll participants will be able to attend two introductory 20-minute lectures in the morning (11.00):\n\n \n\n Dr Emmanuela Bakola\, ’Introduction to Greek theatre and festivals’\n \n Dr Paul Grigsby\, ‘The historical context of Aeschylus’ Persians’\n\n \n\nThese will be followed by a selection of talks running simultaneously\, and repeated in two sessions (12.15-13.00 and 14.00-14.45):\n\n \n\n Dr Xavier Buxton\, ‘Fear and the feminine in Aeschylus’ Persians’\n \n Professor David Fearn\, ‘How do we talk about the imagery of Aeschylus?’ (seminar)\n \n Dr Emmanuela Bakola ‘Watching Aeschylus’ Persians in performance’\n\n \n\nThe matinee performance is at 15.30. This will be followed (at around 17.30) by a Q&A with the director and producer of the play.\n\n \n\nIn addition\, Professor Margaret Miller (author of the seminal Athens and Persia in the Fifth Century B.C.: A Study in Cultural Receptivity) will offer a 30-min videorecorded talk on the Greek imagination of the Persians with evidence from iconography and material culture\, which teachers and pupils can watch in their own time.\n\n \n\nThe Schools Day\, including the performance\, is FREE\, but attendees are asked to organise their own transportation and lunch. If you wish to book your pupils for this day\, please email me (xavier.buxton@warwick.ac.uk)\, declaring\n\n \n\n the number of participants\, including teachers\n \n which of the afternoon talks you wish your pupils to attend.\n\n \n\n*Please do not over-estimate student numbers.* It has been frustrating\, in previous years\, to see empty seats at this over-subscribed event.\n\n \n\nThe Schools Day will become fully booked very quickly. We will operate a waiting list for those schools who apply after the booking limit has been reached. If the the matinee performance is full\, or not convenient\, schools may instead book for the evening performances on Thursday 25th (7.00 pm)\, or Friday 26th (7.00pm). Tickets for both these performances (normally £6) will have 50% discount for school groups\, and booking will commence on the 25th October. To make a school group booking for an evening performance\, please email groupbookings@warwick.ac.uk at the Warwick Arts Centre\, cc’ing me (xavier.buxton@warwick.ac.uk). I can also provide access and parking information\, and answer other enquiries.

SUMMARY:Virgil Society Schools Day
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 20th January 2024 Room G22/26 \, South Block\, Senate House\, Malet Street\, London \n\n\n\n11:00 a.m.  Welcome (Alice Bolland\, South Hampstead High School) \n\n\n\n\n\n11:15 a.m.  GCSE Latin \n\n\n\nDr Jean-Michel Hulls (Dulwich College) \n\n\n\n‘Learning about the Roman (under)world with Aeneas’\n\n\n\nThe GCSE prescription of Aeneid 6 is (unavoidably) selective\, leaving out more of Virgil’s complex underworld narrative than it includes. By looking at the text in the round\, we can see that the experience was equally tricky for Virgil’s contemporary audience\, and for Aeneas himself. Unpicking some of the hero’s confusion can help us understand the history\, philosophy and literature behind Book 6. \n\n\n\n\n\n2:15 p.m.  A-level Classical Civilisation (“The World of the Hero”) \n\n\n\nDr Niki Karapanagioti (Oxford High School GDST) \n\n\n\n‘Women in Homer and Virgil: Symbols of a hero’s achievements or co-heroes?’\n\n\n\nThe talk is going to focus on mortal women in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and in Virgil’s Aeneid. It will discuss the mortal women’s appearance in the narrative as victims of men’s pursuit of glory\, fame and honour. But it is also going to try and identify places in all three epics where women are presented in a more positive light\, taking on traits associated with the role of a hero. \n\n\n\n\n\n3:00 p.m.   A-level Latin \n\n\n\nDr Luke Houghton (Queen’s College London / UCL\, Royal Holloway) \n\n\n\n‘Character\, rhetoric\, and description in Aeneid 12’\n\n\n\nHow do you end a story with a predetermined outcome? How can you create tension and hold readers’ attention and interest when significant elements in your plotline have already been infallibly foretold earlier in the narrative? Through close reading of the text of Aeneid 12\, this talk illustrates some of the ways in which Virgil attempts to ensure that his readers remain invested in his characters and their fate even as the overarching course of Roman destiny works itself out over the final book of the poem. \n\n\n\nAttendees are welcome to attend any or all of the talks. Lunch will not be provided\, but light refreshments (tea\, coffee\, biscuits) will be available. The event is free to attend\, but we would be grateful if you could let us know if you and/or your students intend to join us\, so that we have a rough idea of numbers\, by emailing Alice Bolland (alicebolland296@gmail.com) or Luke Houghton (lbthoughton@hotmail.com) before 31st December 2023.

SUMMARY:The Song of Arms and a Man\, UCL
DESCRIPTION:George Sharpley’s adaptation of this classic poem will be read by Ben Cartlidge\, Matthew Hargreaves\, Emma Kirkby and Maria Roddis.\n\n \n\nThe Song of Arms and a Man presents Aeneas’ struggle to fulfil his destiny as founder of Rome – from his escape from the burning ruins of Troy to his asylum and heart-breaking affair with the Carthaginian queen Dido and his reluctant war with the inhabitants of his fated homeland of Italy.\n\n \n\nSelections of Virgil’s epic verse are read in the original Latin interspersed with an English narration which tells the whole story of the poem. With English surtitles all comers have a unique opportunity to enjoy the magic of these Latin voices. The Latin Qvarter’s innovative and acclaimed presentation of a seldom heard masterpiece echoes the ancient culture of public performance of poetry\, and includes music by the aulos specialist\, Callum Armstrong.\n\n \nTO BOOK!\n \n\nGroup bookings : email latin@lingua.co.uk\n\n \n\nMore information from www.latinqvarter.co.uk

SUMMARY:Medea. The Oxford Greek Play 2023
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Oxford Greek play is Medea\, performed 8-10 November.\n\n \n\n“What drives a mother to kill her own children? How can a victimised woman turn into a passionate and scheming avenger? These questions have gripped audiences of Euripides’ Medea for over 2000 years and will be returning to the stage once again. Performed with a new English translation alongside the original ancient-Greek\, the 2023 Oxford Greek Play aims to breathe new life into the past and reveal its timeless significance.\n\n \n\nA stranger in a foreign land\, deserted by her husband Jason\, Medea initially finds herself in a desperate situation. Her intelligence and wrath is feared by King Creon of Corinth\, who casts her into exile. But she is fatally granted one more day to stay. A proud but treacherous woman\, an expert rhetorician driven by ungovernable passion\, Medea enacts a deadly vengeance that shocks any who witness it. Euripides’ Medea is a classic drama that questions more than it answers\, never failing to both fascinate and astound.”\n\n \nFURTHER INFORMATION AND TO BOOK

SUMMARY:Ancient Worlds\, New Horizons: Broadening the Study of the Past
DESCRIPTION:Ancient Worlds\, New Horizons: Broadening the Study of the PastUCL\, Wednesday 25 October 2023\n\n \n\n2:30 Welcome and introduction (Gesine Manuwald/Stephen Colvin)\n\n3:00 Phiroze Vasunia ‘Rethinking the Classical’\n\n \n\n3:30 Discussion\n\n3:45 Mairéad McAuley ‘Collaborative Pedagogy: building staff-student EDI partnerships’\n\n \n\n4:15 Discussion\n\n4:30 Tea\n\n5:00 Mark Weeden: keynote lecture\n‘War in heaven\, war on earth – mythology as a means of dealing with disaster’\n\n \n\nComparisons are frequently made between the mythology of the violent succession of kingship in heaven as known from Greek epic poetry of the 7th century BCE and similar stories that were circulating in the areas of northern Syria and central Turkey during the 2nd millennium BCE. But what did these stories mean to people in these areas\, how did they use them? Documents in the Hittite and Hurrian languages that are preserved from the time may be able to help us to understand this\, and new discoveries are continuing to throw more light on the matter every year.\n\n \n\n6:00 Close; refreshments.\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nThe expansion of cuneiform languages at UCL\, and the conclusion of a research project Comparative Classics: Greece\, Rome\, and India\, have been a catalyst to rethink the study of the ancient Mediterranean world and its neighbours\, and how best to structure degree programmes for a new and wider constituency. We are launching a new umbrella BA programme Classics and the Ancient World in 2024\, with three flexible pathways. The thinking behind this was\n\n– To reimagine the study of the ancient world and its reception for a new social and intellectual environment;\n– To protect smaller degree programmes;\n– To promote both intellectual diversity and interdisciplinarity in an academic environment which disfavours organisational fragmentation.\n\nOur colloquium will reflect on the challenges and rhetoric of studying the ancient world\, and on how we might reimagine the discipline for a new generation of students. We shall start with a brief overview of how the UCL BA and pathways will work\, and finish with an inaugural lecture by Mark Weeden.\n\nThe event is open to all\, and you are welcome to join us in person or via Zoom for all or some of this event. SUMMARY:‘Luxury on the Bay of Naples: The View from Pliny's HQ at Misenum’\, a Talk by Andrew Wallace-Hadrill
DESCRIPTION:Dear all\,\n\n \n\nIt is with great pleasure that we invite you to the first Bristol Classical Association event for the academic year\, which will take place on 10th October 2023 at 7pm.\n\n \n\nTuesday 10th October\, 7pm – Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill (University of Cambridge)\n\n \n\n \n\n‘Luxury on the Bay of Naples: The View from Pliny’s HQ at Misenum’\n\n \n\nFamously\, the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 was observed by the Younger Pliny from the residence of his uncle who commanded the Roman fleet at Misenum. It was in fact a brilliant vantage point for observing the whole Bay of Naples: the luxury resort of Baiae\, the great commercial port of Puteoli\, Naples itself\, and of course Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Elder Pliny’s 36-book Natural History has much to tell us about life on the Bay\, as well as the volcanic phenomena that were to lead to his death. Hand in hand with this Pliny\, we can explore the wonders of nature\, and the foibles of mankind.\n\n \n\nAndrew Wallace-Hadrill is Honorary Professor of Roman Studies and Director of Research for the Faculty of Classics\, University of Cambridge. His research interests span a range of topics\, from Herculaneum\, Pompeii\, and Roman urbanism\, to public and private space\, and Roman cultural identity.\n\n \n\nAs in previous years\, the talk will take place in the Peace Memorial Hall at Badminton School\, Westbury Rd\, Bristol BS9 3BA. To register\, please complete the following online form (1 per person attending). If you have difficulty using the online form\, or would like to contact a member of our team\, please email Barbara Bell at bmbellmini@aol.com\n\n \n\nThe form to register can be found by following this link: https://forms.gle/mg88S93WgcCwPA2k6\n\n \n\nThere are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. There will be a cost of £5 at the door for visitors. Refreshments will be available from 6.30pm.\n\n \n\nWe are looking forward to seeing you there.\n\n \n\nImage: Pliny the Younger and his Mother at Misenum\, 79 AD (1785)\, Angelica Kauffmann\, oil on canvas\, Princeton University Art Museum\, NJ\, USA.

I have over thirty years’ experience as an English Language teacher and ESOL Programme Manager in Further Education; and over twenty years’ experience designing and delivering museum tours for English Language students\, at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. At the British Museum I also offer workshops for children on Ancient Greek and Egyptian Life\, and I have taught on the Museum’s Iraq Emergency Programme\, delivering English Language training for Iraqi Archaeologists. My first Classics teaching was private tuition in 1983\, and I have over twenty years’ of Classics teaching experience\, in Primary\, Secondary and Adult Education. Since 2012 I have been a  Tutor of Classics at City Lit\, where I currently teach Latin and Greek courses on-line\, and face-to-face at the British Museum: recent specialist courses include ‘Learning Latin through Latin’ (by the Direct Method)\, and Greek Accentuation. Publishing work includes leading on the forthcoming audio facility for the course-book ‘Reading Latin’ (Cambridge University Press 2016) widely used on Adult Education and University Classics courses. In all my courses I try to include speaking and listening work\, thus following the students’ stated preference for hearing how we think Latin and Greek were spoken in Classical times.

SUMMARY:Summer School in Homer 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Summer School in Homer will be held onsite and online with hybrid teaching in London\, UK from Monday 31 July to Friday 4 August 2023 and in Chios\, Greece from Monday 28 August to Friday 1 September 2023.\n\n\n\nThe Summer School offers five days of intensive teaching of Homeric language and literature. There will be four language or literature classes each day as well as lectures\, talks and roundtables\, between 10.30 and 16.30. The course is not residential.\n\n\n\nTeaching will be generally in groups of 15-20 people which\, as far as possible\, comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, but they should find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. Some classes concentrate chiefly on reading texts\, while others offer a mixture of grammar and translation practice. Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Classics in the London area and beyond.\n\n\nFURTHER DETAILS AND TO BOOK
