SUMMARY:Why Greek is still a living language and Latin isn't: a talk by Dr Rupert Thompson
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 16th November at 4.30 pm\, Dr Rupert Thompson will be speaking on: \n‘Why Greek is still a living language and Latin isn’t’ \nLatin is universally held to be a ‘dead language’\, but Greek has since antiquity been the language of the Hellenic people and remains the official language of Greece and Cyprus to the present day. And what accounts for the different fates of Latin and Greek? \nRupert Thompson is Lecturer in Classics (Philology and Linguistics) and Fellow of Selwyn College\, Cambridge. He has a particular interest in historical and comparative linguistics. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with expected numbers as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 13th November.

SUMMARY:The Ancient Guide to Modern Life: Natalie Haynes at STREAM South London Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:THE ANCIENT GUIDE TO MODERN LIFE           \nWITH NATALIE HAYNES \nAT STREAM SOUTH LONDON BOOK FESTIVAL \n12 NOON – 1.00 PM    SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2015 \nThe multi-talented Natalie Haynes\, writer (non-fiction: The Ancient Guide to Modern Life\, fiction: Amber Fury\, children’s book: The Great Escape)\, critic and broadcaster\, classicist and former stand-up comic\, with The Ancient Guide to Modern Life. \nWhether political\, cultural or social\, there are endless parallels between the ancient and modern worlds. Whether it’s the murder of Caesar or the political assassination of Thatcher; the narrative arc of the hit HBO series The Wire or that of Oedipus; the popular enthusiasm for the Emperor Titus or President Obama – over and over again we can be seen to be living very much like people did 2\,000 or more years ago. Our lives are infinitely richer if we take the time to look at what the Greeks and Romans have given us in politics and law\, religion and philosophy and education\, and to learn how people really lived in Athens\, Rome\, Sparta and Alexandria. \nNatalie Haynes takes us through a lively and humorous re-examination of the ancient world and its relevance to modern life. \nSTREAM2015\, Streatham & Clapham High School\, 42 Abbotswood Rd\, London SW16 1AW. \nFor further information visit www.STREAM2015.co.uk

SUMMARY:Ovid's Metamorphoses\, a production by Pants on Fire
DESCRIPTION:Pants on Fire’s award-winning\, sell-out actor-musician extravaganza presents ancient myths as you’ve never see them before! A swell party fusing magical stagecraft and breathtaking imagery which relocates Ovid’s epic tales of fantastical transformation to the dark and delicious times of WWII. \nCupid – an evacuee with a catapult\, Narcissus – an iconic Hollywood heartthrob drooling over his own cinematic image and The Chorus- Andrews-like sisters finding close harmony amid cosmic chaos. \nAn exploration of man’s inextricable link with nature and the universe. At a time when the earth is beginning another metamorphosis and humankind finds itself on the brink of change\, these prescient ancient myths strike a poignant chord.

SUMMARY:Dr Fiachra Mac Góráin to speak on Aeneid 6
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 14th October at 4.30 pm\, Dr Fiachra Mac Góráin will be speaking on: \n‘Time and memory in Aeneid 6’ \nBook 6 is often regarded as the keystone of the Aeneid. During his descent to the Underworld Aeneas processes traumatic memories from the past in order to face both his and the Romans’ future. The most obvious memories in play are on the level of human experience\, those of Aeneas\, Dido\, Deiphobus\, etc.\, but equally important to the book is Roman memory of historical experience and the sometimes problematic course of empire\, and the memory of the literary past\, from Homer to Catullus. \nDr Mac Góráin is Lecturer in Classics at University College\, London. He specialises in Augustan poetry\, and Virgil in particular. He is currently writing a book\, to be entitled ‘Virgil’s Dionysus’. \nAeneid 6 is a current A-level set text; the talk will also be of interest to pupils who wish to improve their background knowledge of Virgil. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Singing Hall. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with expected numbers as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday 12th October. \n

The project follows on from a successful project on this topic run during the Easter holidays (http://www.research.ames.cam.ac.uk/research-groups/chinastudies-\nrg/public-policy-engagement/historycamp). \nThe charge of £50 per day for the two days (£100 per person) includes teaching\, materials\, the museum visit and the tour. A small number of bursaries are available on receipt of a letter from the school confirming the need. We can arrange accommodation at one of the Cambridge colleges (including meals) at an additional cost (£67.50 per person\, per night\, including bed and breakfast\, dinner and a packed lunch). \nPlease send an email to register or to request more information to:\nDr Sally K Church\, Director\nskc1000@cam.ac.uk
