DESCRIPTION:Northampton High School are fortunate to be hosting Dr. Philomen Probert from Oxford’s Classics Faculty on Thursday 27th September at 4:30pm as part of our programme of events celebrating European Day of Languages. Her talk\, part of the Outreach programme\, is entitled “Language Learning Across Language\, Culture and Time”\, and promises to be of interest to anyone who is learning a foreign language. \n“When we learn languages we often find some things harder than others. For example\, the distinction between masculine and feminine nouns in French is difficult for English speakers\, but basic French word order is a bit easier. The use of the English word ‘the’ is very difficult for Russian speakers\, but a bit easier for French speakers. (English spelling is difficult for everybody…) For these reasons\, different techniques are used for teaching different languages and to different groups of people. Yet tools and techniques for language teaching have also influenced one another across languages and cultures. By exploring historical language teaching and learning techniques in western Europe\, this talk aims to enrich the intrinsic interest of language teaching and learning itself.” \nFree event\, with refreshments from 4pm: all welcome. DESCRIPTION:From Classics for All… \nFollowing the success of the free training course in Latin and Greek that we ran for teachers in October 2017 at Harrow School\, we are proposing to run the course again this summer and would like to gauge initial interest. \nHarrow School has kindly offered us the use of their facilities between Tuesday 28th – Thursday 30th August 2018 and therefore we propose to run a 2 – 2.5 day course during this time period. \nGroups\nDepending on interest levels\, we plan to offer separate groups for those interested in the following: \n\nBeginners Latin (Cambridge Latin Course Book 1)\nIntermediate Latin (up to GCSE level)\nBeginners Greek (John Taylor Greek to GCSE Book 1)\nIntermediate Greek (for those with some existing knowledge of Greek\, focusing more on GCSE level language content)\n\nThe training course is open to all teachers in state secondary schools in England or Wales. Whether you are interested in introducing Latin or Ancient Greek into your school for the first time\, or whether you would like to consolidate your own linguistic understanding to support what you currently teach\, we hope that this free training opportunity will prove invaluable. \nThe information above provides a rough guide to the content that we propose to cover in each group but this is extremely flexible. We are keen to ensure that these courses are as beneficial as possible to those who attend and therefore we will tailor the exact structure and content of each class in response to need. \nThe sessions will be led by a subject specialist from Harrow School and by experienced trainers from Classics for All. Group sizes will be kept small to allow for maximum progress. \nCosts\nThe course is free to attend and lunch will also be provided free of charge. DESCRIPTION:JACT Greek Summer School \nSunday 29 July – Saturday 11 August \nApplications are now open for the JACT Greek Summer School\, which welcomes more than 300 students annually for a fortnight of intensive Greek tuition. Beginners are especially welcome\, and no prior knowledge of Greek or Latin is required. For more details\, and to apply\, please visit www.greeksummerschool.org. \n  \nTeachers’ course \nThe summer school is offering a dedicated beginners’ course for teachers (active or aspiring) who wish to start learning Ancient Greek.  Students will cover a large amount of Greek within a scholarly and academically intensive environment\, providing a firm linguistic basis for teachers who plan eventually to teach Greek within their own schools. The course also represents an ideal CPD opportunity for those wishing to acquire new expertise. \n\n32 hours of Greek tuition (with significant amounts of independent study in between sessions);\ncoverage of the whole of John Taylor’s Greek to GCSE: Part One;\nintegrated discussion about how Greek can be delivered to pupils in a school setting (e.g. resources\, priorities\, activities\, how to explore links with Latin);\ndaily lectures and seminars on a range of Classical topics\, covering literature\, history\, philosophy\, art and linguistics\nthe chance to meet the course tutors – 45 school-/university-level Greek teachers;\n\nTeachers who already have some experience of Greek are also welcome to attend – they will join Intermediate/Advanced tutor groups. \nThe course fee is £725: this includes all tuition and full-board accommodation (mature students are usually housed together). DESCRIPTION:University College London\nMonday 23 July to Friday 27 July 2018\nNew for 2018\, the Summer School is collaborating with the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus and offering the opportunity to study Homer in Nicosia\, Cyprus\, from Sunday 28th July to Thursday 2nd August 2018. The course will comprise of three days of classes (between 10.30 a.m. and 4 p.m.) and two days of archaeological visits\, as well as lectures and screenings in the evenings. Travel and accommodation should be independently arranged. \nThe Summer School offers five days of intensive teaching in Homer. There are five language and literature classes each day (between 10.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.) as well as lectures and other events after the classes. The fee is £120. The course is not residential. Bursaries and travel grants may be available for certain categories of students. \nStudents will be assigned to teaching groups of normally not more than 15-20 people. As far as possible\, groups comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, and they will find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. This taster session presents an accessible\, modern and relevant approach to Latin and Classics. \n  \n  \nFREE EXPLORATORY SESSION AND TRAINING \nClassics for All and Notting Hill and Ealing High School (NHEHS) are pleased to invite you to a free\, half-day exploratory session and training on Key Stage 3\, 4 and 5 Latin and Classics at NHEHS on Wednesday 27th June 2018. \nClassics for All is a charity\, which works with state schools across the UK to widen access to Classical subjects. NHEHS is a leader in education for girls and enjoys a reputation for academic excellence at both the junior and senior levels. \nClassics for All offer free support and training to schools who would like to explore the possibility of offering Classics to their pupils. \nWhy might Classics be relevant to your pupils? \nLatin and Classics are engaging support tools for English literacy\, and the study of Modern Foreign Languages.  Ancient History and Classical Civilisation are widely respected A Level options\, and with training (offered free by CfA) can be taught by non-specialist teachers. This exploratory session will use case studies and empirical evidence to demonstrate how the subjects are: \n\nsupported by modern materials that promote accessibility to students of all abilities\nan excellent support for English grammar and literacy for students of all abilities\, promoting increased and enriched vocabulary\, and deeper understanding of English grammar\nan appealing path to increased cultural access for all\, including EAL students\naccessible as a KS3 language option\, or complementary to other MFL learning\nideally suited to cross-curricular aims for History\, Maths\, Art\, PSHE and Science\n\n  \nWhat will these sessions and training cover? \nThe initial exploratory session will: \n\nexplore in detail the benefits of including Latin and Classics in the curriculum\npresent the courses and materials available for the teaching of Latin and Classics\ndiscuss the best pathway for your school to introduce the subject\n\nThe session will also introduce Primary teachers to Latin and Classics at KS2.  If you know of any Primary School Headteachers or Language Coordinators who would be interested in attending\, please pass this information on to them. \nSubsequent sessions will train staff to be classroom-ready for the teaching of their chosen Latin and Classics course. \nThe Logistics\nInitial exploratory session: Hosted at Notting Hill and Ealing High School\, Wednesday 27th June\, 5 – 6:30pm.  Refreshments will be provided. \nSubsequent free training sessions: By arrangement with each participating school. \nThe trainers:\nCharlie Andrew is a Classics graduate teaching Latin and Classics across Key Stages 2\, 3 and 4. These fresh new films (in the original language\, with subtitles)\, produced for online broadcast\, aim to reach new audiences internationally\, and to inspire a love of Greek language and drama in the twenty-first century. \nThis unique public event will feature a showing of three of Barefaced Greek’s films (Aristophanes’ Lysistrata\, ‘The watchman’ from Aeschylus’ Agamemnon\, and ‘Athena and Poseidon’ from Euripides’ Trojan Women) introduced by the company. Join us in June to explore how the Birmingham and West Midlands Schools Classics Hub can support the development of Classics teaching in your school. \nWe will cover: \n\nWays to develop existing Classics provision;\nHow to get new courses up and running;\nHow to develop new provision: from after-school clubs to timetabled lessons;\nHow ancient languages can be introduced as part of English\, MFL\, or literacy lessons;\nHow Classics can be embedded across the curriculum\, through History\, English\, Drama\, RE\, Science\, PSHE\, etc.;\nHow to access Classics for All funding and training opportunities;\nHow to access post-training support.\n\nThe hub works in partnership with Classics for All (CfA)\, a national charity whose funds are available to state schools to introduce or enhance Classics provision.
