SUMMARY:Bristol Classics Hub: GCSE and A Level Classical Civilisation Study Day
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 20th March 2017\, the Bristol Classics Hub will be hosting a Classical Civilisation Study Day at the University of Bristol for GCSE and A Level students. There will be four sessions during the day on the following topics: \n\nSex and Gender in the Ancient World\nAugustus and The Aeneid\nGreek Tragedy\nHomer’s Odyssey\n\nEach session will be divided into two halves: for the first 30 minutes\, an academic from the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Bristol will deliver an engaging\, accessible lecture on the topic. In the second half\, current undergraduate and postgraduate Classics students will facilitate interactive sessions which will enable more in-depth discussion of questions raised in the lectures. The sessions will be accessible even to those who have not studied a particular topic before. \nThe study day will run from 10am until 3pm and there is no cost to attend. There will be refreshments during the two breaks but lunch will not be provided. Students will be able to eat their own packed lunch in the conference rooms. \nDuring the second session of the day\, Alex Orgee from OCR Classics will be delivering some training for teachers. This will focus on the changes to Classics and Ancient History examination specifications and will be particularly useful for those schools transitioning from AQA to OCR Classical Civilisation. University of Bristol tutors will also be present throughout the day to answer any questions you may have about the university application process or about EPQ support. You might also like to take the chance to network with other professionals engaged in Classics outreach and teaching. \nFor further details about this event\, please visit our website http://www.bristol.ac.uk/classics/hub/events/. If you have any questions or would like to book student places for the study day\, please contact Hannah Walsh: h.walsh@bristol.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to the Presocratics
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 20th March at 4.30 pm\, Dr Tom Mackenzie will be speaking on: \n‘The First Philosophers? An Introduction to the Presocratics’ \nHistories of Western philosophy tend to start with the archaic Greek thinkers known as the Presocratics. Yet their theories (as far as we can reconstruct them from the few surviving fragments of their work) concern very different topics from what we would expect of philosophers today. In this talk\, Dr Mackenzie will provide an overview of some of the key figures within this group (Thales\, Anaximander\, Xenophanes\, Heraclitus\, Parmenides\, Zeno\, Empedocles\, Democritus)\, address some of the problems in trying to reconstruct their thought\, and explore some respects in which the label of ‘Philosophy’ both is and is not fitting for their work. \nDr Mackenzie is A G Leventis Research Fellow at University College\, London\, and the Presocratics are one of his specialisms. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 17th March. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance\, and that all adults attending should bring a form of photo ID.

SUMMARY:''The Poetry of Pop: Was ancient drama the rock music of its era?”
DESCRIPTION:St Gabriel’s Classics Department presents:\n \n‘The Poetry of Pop: Was ancient drama the rock music of its era?’\n \nIt is with great excitement and anticipation that the Classics Department announces its latest talk. Speaking on the subject of lyricism modern and ancient we have the bass and keyboard players of ‘The Cure’ (think ‘Lovecats’\, ‘Friday I’m in Love’ or ‘Boys don’t cry’) talking on how modern music finds its lyrical and musical inspiration. ‘The Cure’ are arguably one of the ‘super-bands’ of the 80’s up to the present day\, so this is an incredible opportunity to hear about the creative process in action. For the ancient perspective\, we have Dr. Henry Stead\, author of ‘A Cockney Catullus’ and translator of Greek and Roman tragedy. He has also made a major contribution to the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama and is the founder and director of London Poetry Systems.\n \nThis event is being promoted to encourage the notion that the ancient and modern worlds are not as far apart as people sometimes think. It will be taking place on Wednesday 22nd March in the Sports Hall at 7.30p.m. We envisage the talk lasting until around 9.00. Refreshments will be provided.\n \nThe talk is free\, but we are asking for donations to support the teaching and promotion of Classics: all money raised will go to Classics for All which supports the teaching of Classics. It is open to anyone with an interest in Classics\, music\, drama\, poetry or any other field of learning: few things are more inspiring than watching experts in their field.\n \nIf you would like to attend this talk\, please fill in the form below as soon as possible. We anticipate great demand for this event\, so to avoid disappointment please do return your slips as quickly as possible.\n \nYours\,\n \nMr. Ives\, Head of Classics\n \nI would like               tickets for ”The Poetry of Pop: Was ancient drama the rock music of its era?’ on Wednesday\, March 22nd 2017.\n \nName:…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

SUMMARY:An Introduction to the Presocratics (re-scheduled)
DESCRIPTION:Re-scheduled from last term: \nOn Wednesday 26th April at 4.30 pm\, Dr Tom Mackenzie will be speaking on: \n\n\n‘The First Philosophers? \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday 24th April. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance\, and that all adults attending should bring a form of photo ID.

SUMMARY:Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day (II) on A-level Classical Civilisation
DESCRIPTION:**Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day (II) on A-level Classical Civilisation (Senate House\, Malet Street\, London WC1E 7HU\, 10 am – 4pm\, Wednesday 24th May)** \nIn addition to the Manchester INSET day on 18th February\, the Classical Association Teaching Board is pleased to announce a further\, London-based\, INSET day aimed in support of teachers of Classical Civilisation. \nWorkshops and talks will be offered by academics with expertise in areas of the specifications and by experienced schoolteachers; OCR will be contributing to the event. We welcome offers of workshops and talks on the subject of the specifications (Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey; Virgil’s Aeneid; Greek theatre; Imperial image; Invention of the Barbarian; Greek art\, Greek religion\, Love and Relationships; Late Republican Politics; Athenian Democracy). \nContributions will be made by Professor Hans van Wees (University of London) and  Dr Kathryn Tempest (University of Roehampton). Our plenary lecturer will be Professor Edith Hall\, who will speak specifically on the subject of Inventing the Barbarian. \nIf you would like to offer a talk or host a workshop\, or if you have any other queries or questions\, please contact the organiser\, Peter Liddel (peter.liddel@manchester.ac.uk) \nTo register for the event\, please do so by Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/classical-civilisation-a-level-inset-tickets-30351358731?utm_term=eventurl_text \nSubscribers to this list will already be aware of the background to this pair of INSET days: \nAQA’s decision to discontinue Classical Civilisation at A-level means that OCR is now the sole examination board offering the subject. \nOCR has produced revised specifications for the qualification\, which will be taught from September 2017 which are available here:\nhttp://www.ocr.org.uk/Images/315133-specification-accredited-a-level-classical-civilisation-h408.pdf \nTeachers in schools and colleges across the UK have made it clear to the CATB that there is a need for training in the form of subject-specific talks and workshops on the specifications. The CATB has stepped up to the mark to offer an INSET day for teachers of Classical Civilisation at A-level. \nThe event is supported by the Classical Association Teaching Board and the Institute of Classical Studies. \nPeter Liddel\nChair\, CATB\nSenior Lecturer in Ancient History\, University of Manchester \nDr Rosie Wyles\nLecturer in Classical History and Literature\, University of Kent

SUMMARY:'From diabetes to haemorrhoids' - ancient Greek medical language & practice\, a talk by Peter Jones
DESCRIPTION:Classics Lecture\, 6-7 p.m.\, Monday 19th June 2017\nSt Benedict’s School\, 54 Eaton Rise\, Ealing\, London W5 2ES \n‘From diabetes to haemorrhoids’ – ancient Greek medical language & practice\nDr Peter Jones MBE\nMuch of the terminology of modern medicine derives from ancient Greek\, often via the Latin into which Roman doctors converted it\, e.g. Greek στόμαχος→Latin stomachus\, Greek καρκίνος ‘crab’→Latin cancer. This rich inheritance is fortunately not matched by any modern adherence to ancient medical practice\, though Greeks are credited with the invention of ‘rational’ medicine\, to some of whose basic principles we still adhere. \nThis talk will explore the language and practice of ancient medicine\, with many eye-opening and sometimes eye-watering examples. All Greek will be transliterated\, and (along with Latin) translated where necessary\, including that well-known Latin word git\, with its many health-giving properties. \nWe have been very lucky this year to persuade Dr Peter V. Jones MBE to deliver our annual Classics Week lecture. Dr Jones is a distinguished writer\, journalist\, and broadcaster\, who is a former senior lecturer in Classics at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. His columns for the Daily Telegraph were published as Learn Latin\, Learn Ancient Greek\, and Classics in Translation. His book Ancient & Modern was based on his columns for The Spectator. As well as many academic works\, he has written Vote for Caesar (about how ancient civilisations solved the problems of today)\, Eureka! Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Ancient Greeks but Were Afraid to Ask\, and Veni\, Vidi\, Vici: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Romans but Were Afraid to Ask. His latest book is Quid Pro Quo: What the Romans Really Gave the English Language. \nThe lecture will commence in the School Library at 6.00 p.m. and will be followed at 7.00 p.m. by refreshments. All are welcome. There is no charge for this event\, but to enable us to gauge numbers please e-mail Mr Hullis (shullis@stbenedicts.org.uk) by Wednesday 14th June to let him know that you would like to attend.

SUMMARY:Summer School in Homer\, UCL
DESCRIPTION:An in-depth Summer School is being run by UCL in July. From their website… \n  \nMonday 17th July to Friday 21st July 2017 \n \nThe Summer School offers five days of intensive teaching of Homeric language and literature. There will be four language classes each day as well as lectures\, between 10.30 and 16.30. The course is not residential. \nTeaching will be generally in groups of 15-20 people which\, as far as possible\, comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, but they should find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. Some classes concentrate chiefly on reading texts\, while others offer a mixture of grammar and translation practice. Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Classics in the London area and beyond. \n\nLanguage courses\n\nBeginners Greek: Frank Beetham\, Beginning Greek with Homer (An elementary course based on Odyssey 5)\, pp. 1-50.\nIntermediate Greek: Frank Beetham\, Beginning Greek with Homer (An elementary course based on Odyssey 5)\, pp. 41-110.\nAdvanced Greek 1: Iliad 24 \nClick here for Introduction to Linear B \n \n\nLiterature courses\n\nHomer from Translation – Homer’s Legacy.\nThemes: the gods and goddesses\, women\, heroism\, aristeia\, kleos\, the Homeric question\, Penelope\, Helen\, and Achilles and Hector. Reception of all the above themes in other modes of representation such as novelisations\, cinema\, modern poetry etc.\nTexts: Odyssey 4-12 and 18-22 and Iliad 6\, 18\, 22 and 24. \nThe Summer School in Homer caters for school and university students\, and for anyone else who wishes to learn Homeric Greek\, or to revive their knowledge of it. Potential participants will include: students with no prior knowledge of the language; pre-GCSE/GCSE and A-Level students; university students; mature applicants who wish to expand their knowledge of the Homeric epics. Our principal concern is to provide a thorough programme of language learning in a lively university environment. \nCalligraphy Workshop (Tuesday 18 – Friday 21 July 2017) \nWrite Homer like the Humanists – a Practical Course with Patricia Lovett MBE (professional scribe and illuminator) £20 supplement to cover tools and materials costs \nThe Humanists rediscovered the classics\, including Homer\, and developed what they considered to be an ‘antique’ writing style to suit the ancient texts. In fact the script was based on Carolingian Minuscule of the ninth century\, but with Renaissance twists. Learn how to write this script\, then write out a short section from Homer in Alexander Pope’s translation on calfskin vellum. \nAll tools and materials supplied\, along with exemplar worksheets to take home. Beginners welcome. \nThe plan: \nDay 1 \nIntroduction to Calligraphy\, nib angle\, stroke sequence\, letter-forms and writing minuscule letters \nDay 2 \nMajuscule letters – shape\, Square Capitals\, Renaissance Capitals \nDay 3 \nWriting with a small nib\, selection of text\, writing the text\, layout and design\, vellum and vellum preparation \nDay 4 \nWriting the text on vellum\, small exhibition at the end of the day \nProgramme\, Cost and Application form \n\nThe programme for the Summer School in Homer can be found here. Please note: this programme is still subject to change.\nThe cost of the Summer School is £110 and you can pay here. This includes all tuition\, but not accommodation or travel expenses.\n\nEnquiries: please email the Summer School.
