SUMMARY:‘Luxury on the Bay of Naples: The View from Pliny's HQ at Misenum’\, a Talk by Andrew Wallace-Hadrill
DESCRIPTION:Dear all\,\n\n \n\nIt is with great pleasure that we invite you to the first Bristol Classical Association event for the academic year\, which will take place on 10th October 2023 at 7pm.\n\n \n\nTuesday 10th October\, 7pm – Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill (University of Cambridge)\n\n \n\n \n\n‘Luxury on the Bay of Naples: The View from Pliny’s HQ at Misenum’\n\n \n\nFamously\, the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 was observed by the Younger Pliny from the residence of his uncle who commanded the Roman fleet at Misenum. It was in fact a brilliant vantage point for observing the whole Bay of Naples: the luxury resort of Baiae\, the great commercial port of Puteoli\, Naples itself\, and of course Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Elder Pliny’s 36-book Natural History has much to tell us about life on the Bay\, as well as the volcanic phenomena that were to lead to his death. Hand in hand with this Pliny\, we can explore the wonders of nature\, and the foibles of mankind.\n\n \n\nAndrew Wallace-Hadrill is Honorary Professor of Roman Studies and Director of Research for the Faculty of Classics\, University of Cambridge. His research interests span a range of topics\, from Herculaneum\, Pompeii\, and Roman urbanism\, to public and private space\, and Roman cultural identity.\n\n \n\nAs in previous years\, the talk will take place in the Peace Memorial Hall at Badminton School\, Westbury Rd\, Bristol BS9 3BA. To register\, please complete the following online form (1 per person attending). If you have difficulty using the online form\, or would like to contact a member of our team\, please email Barbara Bell at bmbellmini@aol.com\n\n \n\nThe form to register can be found by following this link: https://forms.gle/mg88S93WgcCwPA2k6\n\n \n\nThere are no tickets\, and talks are free for Bristol Classical Association members\, students\, and school pupils. There will be a cost of £5 at the door for visitors. Refreshments will be available from 6.30pm.\n\n \n\nWe are looking forward to seeing you there.\n\n \n\nImage: Pliny the Younger and his Mother at Misenum\, 79 AD (1785)\, Angelica Kauffmann\, oil on canvas\, Princeton University Art Museum\, NJ\, USA.

DESCRIPTION:This on-line beginners’ course in Classical Greek Accentuation is delivered to you by London’s City Lit\, Europe’s largest centre for adult education.\n \n\n \nDates: 26/09/23 – 31/10/23\n \nTime: 14:00 – 15:30\n \nLocation: Online\n \nTutor: Andrew David (Biography below)\n \nCourse content\n \n\nWhether you are a student of Greek or a teacher of Greek\, if you have always wanted to apply the correct accentuation on Classical Greek texts\, but have never quite learnt how to do so – then this is your opportunity to gain a working knowledge of this essential skill for the teaching and learning of Classical Greek.\n\n \n\nTo book a place on this course visit https://www.citylit.ac.uk/ and search for course RG039.\n\n \n\n\n\n \nAbout Andrew David\n \n\nI studied Classics and trained as an English Language and Classics teacher\, at Pembroke College Oxford\, Exeter University\, International House\, and Harrow College of Further Education. I have over thirty years’ experience as an English Language teacher and ESOL Programme Manager in Further Education; and over twenty years’ experience designing and delivering museum tours for English Language students\, at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. At the British Museum I also offer workshops for children on Ancient Greek and Egyptian Life\, and I have taught on the Museum’s Iraq Emergency Programme\, delivering English Language training for Iraqi Archaeologists. My first Classics teaching was private tuition in 1983\, and I have over twenty years’ of Classics teaching experience\, in Primary\, Secondary and Adult Education. Since 2012 I have been a  Tutor of Classics at City Lit\, where I currently teach Latin and Greek courses on-line\, and face-to-face at the British Museum: recent specialist courses include ‘Learning Latin through Latin’ (by the Direct Method)\, and Greek Accentuation. Publishing work includes leading on the forthcoming audio facility for the course-book ‘Reading Latin’ (Cambridge University Press 2016) widely used on Adult Education and University Classics courses. In all my courses I try to include speaking and listening work\, thus following the students’ stated preference for hearing how we think Latin and Greek were spoken in Classical times.

SUMMARY:LATIN CAMP 2023 (Mon 24th July to Sat 5th AUGUST)
DESCRIPTION:From David Stephenson…\n\n \n\nDear Colleagues\,\n\n \n\nI am delighted to announce that we have now opened for applications to join us this summer – please visit www.latincamp.co.uk for full details and simple online application. 2023 dates are Monday 24th July to Saturday 5th August\, once again at Harrogate Ladies’ College after a hugely successful second Camp there in 2022. The website has full details on all our different courses suitable for school students and how we feel each age group will benefit. It also contains details on such things as our costs\, our tutors (who come almost entirely from teaching backgrounds and usually at highly regarded UK schools)\, the facilities and accommodation\, our typical programme of events\, our policy on U18 students and hopefully a feel for “Camp life” generally.\n\n \n\nThe usual minimum age is post-Y10 but we will consider post-Y9 students if they have studied Latin for at least three years or wish to join a beginners’ group. I attach the 2022 daily routine and programme of lectures\, grammar clinics\, trips and events which will give you an immediate idea of what we are about. I also attach my own report on the 2022 Summer School and our fliers for this coming summer. (Hard copies of these will reach schools shortly.) I would be grateful if you pass all this on to anyone at all who might be interested.\n\n \n\nWe also have various bespoke courses for teachers so if you know someone new to Latin teaching (this could equally be an NQT or an experienced teacher of another subject)\, please do pass this onto them. (We can usually secure at least partial funding for places on these courses.)\n\n \n\nAt our core is the intensive preparation and reading of Latin texts. This happens formally in small teaching sets of very similar ability and experience but far more unquantifiable learning happens in all the “in-between” moments\, be they in groups between lessons sat out in the sun\, or at night in the boarding houses. That said\, Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff\, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz\, the site visits\, the staff play\, the costume party. It’s about discovering\, identifying with and joining a wider community of classicists\, making contacts and friends for life.\n\n \n\nPlease do not hesitate to email me (d.stephenson@warwickschool.org) if you have any questions or indeed suggestions – I would love to hear from you.\n\n \n\nYours sincerely\,\n\n \n\nDavid Stephenson\nDirector\nJACT Latin Summer School

SUMMARY:UCL Summer School in Ancient Philosophy 2023
DESCRIPTION:University College London (Some courses are available in an online format) Monday 10 July to Fri 14 July 2023 \nFURTHER INFORMATION AND TO BOOK\nWhat are the origins of the world? How can we achieve happiness? What is the best form of government? Is democracy good? These are only some of the questions which ancient philosophers tried to answer more than 2\,500 years ago. Their bold and unprecedented enterprise prompted an intellectual revolution\, the relevance of which has not since faded. The Summer School in Ancient Philosophy aims to follow the steps of the ancient philosophers in their enquiries on the world and human life\, and explore their continuing importance today. The Summer School offers a five-day programme covering the major themes and thinkers of Ancient Philosophy. \nThere will be four classes each day\, between 10:30 am and 3.30pm. Courses will be held in person unless otherwise specified. For more details about the modules’ format\, please see below or get in touch with us. Students will have access to a variety of online material before and throughout the course. The fee is £140. The course is not residential. Bursaries may be available for certain categories of students and will be granted after the end of the Summer School. \nStudents will be assigned to teaching groups of normally not more than 15-20 people. Groups will comprise students with similar levels of knowledge of the subject. Classes will consist of lectures\, close reading of texts\, and debates and will touch on a variety of themes\, including ethics\, metaphysics\, and theories of knowledge. Texts will be studied in translation\, though some classes will be offered in the original language. The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding. Students are expected to actively participate in classes\, and they will be invited to discuss and critically engage with texts along with other students and teachers. Our tutors include some of the most talented and passionate teachers of ancient philosophy in the London area and beyond.

SUMMARY:Sanskrit Study Group with the Education Renaissance Trust at Lucca\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever been curious about studying Sanskrit\, the ancient Indo-European language that predates Latin and Greek and is the classical language of India?  This summer the Education Renaissance Trust will be offering classics teachers this opportunity at their annual July conference in Lucca\, Italy.  The study group will be led by Warwick and Elena Jessup\, who have spearheaded the teaching of Sanskrit at St James Schools in London.  St James has been teaching Sanskrit as an intrinsic part of its curriculum since its inception in 1975.  Through the years\, the Sanskrit faculty at St James have developed a systematic course and textbooks which have enabled them to teach this subject in a Western context. \n\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n\n\n\nThe event will be held at the beautiful Villa Bocella (see https://www.education-renaissance-trust.org.uk/teachers.html and the enclosed flyer for more information.)  There will be time to experience\, enjoy and explore the Sanskrit language\, as well as relaxation and reflection time\, socialising with other teachers\, and delicious food cooked by chef Allegra McEvedy.  No prior experience is required\, and all study materials are provided. \n\n\n\nYou may ask\, “Why teach Sanskrit?”  Sanskrit gives students an excellent classical training that enhances their linguistic abilities.  It also offers students philosophic insight into Eastern thought\, which is increasingly important in today’s global community.  Students who have Sanskrit GCSE on their CVs always stand out from the crowd. Please be aware that here are only limited places available\, so it will be first come first served.  The deadline to enrol is Apr. 30\, 2023.  If you would like to enrol or discuss this further\, feel free to contact Elena Jessup at e.jessup@stjamesprep.org.uk

SUMMARY:‘Towards a more Inclusive Classics III – Material Culture’\, 28-30 June 2023
DESCRIPTION:An Inclusive Classics Initiative hybrid workshop organised by Dr Alexia Petsalis-Diomidis (University of St Andrews) and Dr Tulsi Parikh (British School at Athens)\, hosted by the Institute of Classical Studies and supported by CUCD EDI Committee.\n\n \n\nThe third ‘Towards a more Inclusive Classics’ workshop is focused on the theme of Material Culture. It addresses the issue of barriers to accessing classical material culture and explores approaches that foreground marginalised perspectives. It offers a forum for integrated discussions between those working at different stages and in different sectors related to classical material culture. Speakers will include students\, academics\, schoolteachers\, archaeologists\, and those working in museums and in outreach. The format of the workshop is hybrid\, consisting of two online half days and one in-person day (29 June) in the ICS / British Museum. Online presentations will be in the form of pre-submitted materials (e.g. a short written paper\, recorded talk\, PowerPoint\, handout) followed by live short talks (c.10 mins) and discussion. These will take place on 28 and 30 June; abstracts of c.150 words are invited for the following panels:\n\n \n\n(1) The ‘INCLUSIVE EXCAVATION PRACTICES’ panel is devoted to the ways in which we can build more diverse and inclusive archaeological practices\, beginning with the work done in the field. Suggested topics include antiracist archaeology\, disability in archaeology\, and collaboration with the public.\n\n \n\n(2) The ‘DECOLONISING THE MUSEUM’ panel combines discussion of decolonising the museum with personal experiences in museums\, foregrounding marginalised voices. A discussion on repatriation will be included here.\n\n \n\n(3) The ‘QUEERING ARCHAEOLOGY’ panel challenges heteronormative and cisnormative ways of studying the past and experiencing material culture.\n\n \n\n(4) The ‘PUBLIC ART AND ARCHAEOLOGY’ panel considers how we can use classical objects in innovative ways to bring together different\, often marginalised\, parts of the community\, cutting across different sectors.\n\n \n\n(5) We are also seeking expressions of interest from teachers for participation in a roundtable on ‘CLASSICAL MATERIAL CULTURE TEACHING IN SCHOOLS’.\n\n \n\nPlease send abstracts and expressions of interest for the roundtable to Tulsi and Alexia\n\n \n\n(inclusiveclassics@gmail.com) by 20 January 2023. We aim to respond by 28 February. We particularly welcome abstracts from early career scholars\, and those currently underrepresented in the field\, including Black\, Asian and those from other minority ethnic communities\, LGBTQ+\, neurodiverse and academics with disabilities. If you would like to be added to the Inclusive Classics email list do get in touch. We hope to advertise student bursaries towards attending the in-person event nearer the time.
