SUMMARY:An Introduction to the Presocratics (re-scheduled)
DESCRIPTION:Re-scheduled from last term: \nOn Wednesday 26th April at 4.30 pm\, Dr Tom Mackenzie will be speaking on: \n\n\n‘The First Philosophers? An Introduction to the Presocratics’ \nHistories of Western philosophy tend to start with the archaic Greek thinkers known as the Presocratics. Yet their theories (as far as we can reconstruct them from the few surviving fragments of their work) concern very different topics from what we would expect of philosophers today. In this talk\, Dr Mackenzie will provide an overview of some of the key figures within this group (Thales\, Anaximander\, Xenophanes\, Heraclitus\, Parmenides\, Zeno\, Empedocles\, Democritus)\, address some of the problems in trying to reconstruct their thought\, and explore some respects in which the label of ‘Philosophy’ both is and is not fitting for their work. \nDr Mackenzie is A G Leventis Research Fellow at University College\, London\, and the Presocratics are one of his specialisms. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with their names as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday 24th April. Please note that we are now required to compile a list of names of those attending in advance\, and that all adults attending should bring a form of photo ID.

SUMMARY:Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day (II) on A-level Classical Civilisation
DESCRIPTION:**Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day (II) on A-level Classical Civilisation (Senate House\, Malet Street\, London WC1E 7HU\, 10 am – 4pm\, Wednesday 24th May)** \nIn addition to the Manchester INSET day on 18th February\, the Classical Association Teaching Board is pleased to announce a further\, London-based\, INSET day aimed in support of teachers of Classical Civilisation. \nWorkshops and talks will be offered by academics with expertise in areas of the specifications and by experienced schoolteachers; OCR will be contributing to the event. We welcome offers of workshops and talks on the subject of the specifications (Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey; Virgil’s Aeneid; Greek theatre; Imperial image; Invention of the Barbarian; Greek art\, Greek religion\, Love and Relationships; Late Republican Politics; Athenian Democracy). \nContributions will be made by Professor Hans van Wees (University of London) and  Dr Kathryn Tempest (University of Roehampton). Our plenary lecturer will be Professor Edith Hall\, who will speak specifically on the subject of Inventing the Barbarian. \nIf you would like to offer a talk or host a workshop\, or if you have any other queries or questions\, please contact the organiser\, Peter Liddel (peter.liddel@manchester.ac.uk) \nTo register for the event\, please do so by Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/classical-civilisation-a-level-inset-tickets-30351358731?utm_term=eventurl_text \nSubscribers to this list will already be aware of the background to this pair of INSET days: \nAQA’s decision to discontinue Classical Civilisation at A-level means that OCR is now the sole examination board offering the subject. \nOCR has produced revised specifications for the qualification\, which will be taught from September 2017 which are available here:\nhttp://www.ocr.org.uk/Images/315133-specification-accredited-a-level-classical-civilisation-h408.pdf \nTeachers in schools and colleges across the UK have made it clear to the CATB that there is a need for training in the form of subject-specific talks and workshops on the specifications. The CATB has stepped up to the mark to offer an INSET day for teachers of Classical Civilisation at A-level. \nThe event is supported by the Classical Association Teaching Board and the Institute of Classical Studies. \nPeter Liddel\nChair\, CATB\nSenior Lecturer in Ancient History\, University of Manchester \nDr Rosie Wyles\nLecturer in Classical History and Literature\, University of Kent

SUMMARY:'From diabetes to haemorrhoids' - ancient Greek medical language & practice\, a talk by Peter Jones
DESCRIPTION:Classics Lecture\, 6-7 p.m.\, Monday 19th June 2017\nSt Benedict’s School\, 54 Eaton Rise\, Ealing\, London W5 2ES \n‘From diabetes to haemorrhoids’ – ancient Greek medical language & practice\nDr Peter Jones MBE\nMuch of the terminology of modern medicine derives from ancient Greek\, often via the Latin into which Roman doctors converted it\, e.g. Greek στόμαχος→Latin stomachus\, Greek καρκίνος ‘crab’→Latin cancer. This rich inheritance is fortunately not matched by any modern adherence to ancient medical practice\, though Greeks are credited with the invention of ‘rational’ medicine\, to some of whose basic principles we still adhere. \nThis talk will explore the language and practice of ancient medicine\, with many eye-opening and sometimes eye-watering examples. All Greek will be transliterated\, and (along with Latin) translated where necessary\, including that well-known Latin word git\, with its many health-giving properties. \nWe have been very lucky this year to persuade Dr Peter V. Jones MBE to deliver our annual Classics Week lecture. Dr Jones is a distinguished writer\, journalist\, and broadcaster\, who is a former senior lecturer in Classics at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. His columns for the Daily Telegraph were published as Learn Latin\, Learn Ancient Greek\, and Classics in Translation. His book Ancient & Modern was based on his columns for The Spectator. As well as many academic works\, he has written Vote for Caesar (about how ancient civilisations solved the problems of today)\, Eureka! Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Ancient Greeks but Were Afraid to Ask\, and Veni\, Vidi\, Vici: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Romans but Were Afraid to Ask. His latest book is Quid Pro Quo: What the Romans Really Gave the English Language. \nThe lecture will commence in the School Library at 6.00 p.m. and will be followed at 7.00 p.m. by refreshments. All are welcome. There is no charge for this event\, but to enable us to gauge numbers please e-mail Mr Hullis (shullis@stbenedicts.org.uk) by Wednesday 14th June to let him know that you would like to attend.

Almost 200 students attended\, including 65 pupils from over 50 schools\, from as far afield as Germany\, Spain\, Portugal and Japan. Classes were offered in Greek and Latin at all levels\, as well as beginners’ Biblical Hebrew\, Syriac and Coptic. \nAs a break from language learning\, students were entertained by lectures from members of the Classics Department on topics ranging from ancient Greek philosophy to neo-Latin\, and they were able to practise their linguistic skills in workshops on Greek and Latin epigraphy. \nI found the afternoon lectures excellent and attended all of them… overall the quality of teaching of teaching was very high. \nI have really enjoyed the summer school… I think the teaching was fantastic… it will help me a lot with my GCSE. I would like to thank KCL for having this wonderful summer school. \nI would recommend the intensive course to any student who has a passion for Latin – even if you just want to learn about this interesting language for fun or take it to a higher level and gain a qualification. It is a great way to spend a few days and you will leave the course wishing it was still ongoing and available on a more regular basis!  I look forward to the next course. \nI had a fantastic experience at the London Summer School in the Classics at KCL. My teacher was an excellent teacher\, witty and extremely knowledgeable… I will definitely do it again next year… In a number\, ten out of ten.\n \nThe Summer School is very grateful for financial support from the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies\, the Classical Association and the Gilbert Murray Trust. \nLondon Summer School in Classics\, UCL\, 4-13 July\, 2017\nUniversity College London will be organising the 2017 London Summer School in Classics (4-13 July\, 2017). It will include sample lectures and seminars\, workshops\, and excavation. Topics will reflect the breadth of the Cambridge Archaeology degree\, which also offers tracks in Egyptology\, Assyriology\, and Biological Anthropology. There will also be guidance on admissions and interviews\, and chance for students to explore the city of Cambridge for themselves. \nAs a subject which uniquely spans the Arts and the Sciences\, Archaeology is suitable for students with a broad range of A level subjects.  Participants are not required to be doing Archaeology A level\, and the content of the summer school will presume no previous knowledge. \nFor students from the state maintained sector\, there is no charge for the food\, accommodation or activities. A charge of £200 will be made to students from the independent sector and from outside the UK (unless they attend on a full scholarship). Travel bursaries are available for students who come from a household with an income of £25\,000 or below. \nApplications have now opened\, and can be made via the booking link. Applicants will also have to arrange for two teachers or equivalent (e.g. a museum curator; not a parent) to each send an academic reference commenting on their academic ability and intellectual enthusiasm for Archaeology\, Egyptology\, Assyriology and/or Biological Anthropology to outreach@arch.cam.ac.uk. Successful applicants will be notified of their place no later than 1st June. \nTo be eligible to apply\, applicants must: \n\nbe in year 12 or equivalent\nhave achieved at least 5 A/A*s at GCSE or equivalent\, and be on track for achieving the grades to make a competitive application to Cambridge\n\nIn addition\, priority will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria\, though this is not a prerequisite to applying: \n\nfrom the state maintained sector\, particularly where they attend schools or colleges with a low overall A-level\, Higher/Advanced Higher (or equivalent) point score and/or schools or colleges with low progression to higher education\nthe first generation in their family to attend university\neligible for free school meals and/or pupil premium\nwho are (or have been) looked after\, accommodated or in care who will only need to meet the study year and academic requirements.\n\nPlease note that we will not accept applications to the summer schools from students who have already applied to university. \nComments from the participants of the 2016 St John’s College Archaeology Summer School \n‘I enjoyed having the chance to learn more about archaeology and meet other people with similar passions and aspirations’ \n‘For me\, I enjoyed the entire summer school. I hadn’t had much of a chance to explore many of the periods we did and it provided me with a new\, broader perception of what interests me. The ancient languages that we explored were particularly fascinating’ \n‘I loved the wide range of topics covered – expanding my knowledge. I also really enjoyed the fact that we took part in other activities that were non-academic as it gave me a feel of uni life’ \n‘I enjoyed everything. I liked the dig as I had never done that before and it was an amazing experience. I liked the languages as well and all the activities and lectures offered. Everybody was really lovely and it was an amazing and memorable experience’ \n‘I honestly enjoyed everything\, the lectures were excellent and the atmosphere was superb’ \n‘I liked learning about different topics within archaeology and talking to staff members about different careers they had and how they arrived at Cambridge in their career’ \n

SUMMARY:Summer School in Homer\, UCL
DESCRIPTION:An in-depth Summer School is being run by UCL in July. From their website… \n  \nMonday 17th July to Friday 21st July 2017 \n \nThe Summer School offers five days of intensive teaching of Homeric language and literature. There will be four language classes each day as well as lectures\, between 10.30 and 16.30. The course is not residential. \nTeaching will be generally in groups of 15-20 people which\, as far as possible\, comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, but they should find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. Some classes concentrate chiefly on reading texts\, while others offer a mixture of grammar and translation practice. Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Classics in the London area and beyond. \n\nLanguage courses\n\nBeginners Greek: Frank Beetham\, Beginning Greek with Homer (An elementary course based on Odyssey 5)\, pp. 1-50.\nIntermediate Greek: Frank Beetham\, Beginning Greek with Homer (An elementary course based on Odyssey 5)\, pp. 41-110.\nAdvanced Greek 1: Iliad 24 \nClick here for Introduction to Linear B \n \n\nLiterature courses\n\nHomer from Translation – Homer’s Legacy.\nThemes: the gods and goddesses\, women\, heroism\, aristeia\, kleos\, the Homeric question\, Penelope\, Helen\, and Achilles and Hector. Reception of all the above themes in other modes of representation such as novelisations\, cinema\, modern poetry etc.\nTexts: Odyssey 4-12 and 18-22 and Iliad 6\, 18\, 22 and 24. \nThe Summer School in Homer caters for school and university students\, and for anyone else who wishes to learn Homeric Greek\, or to revive their knowledge of it. Potential participants will include: students with no prior knowledge of the language; pre-GCSE/GCSE and A-Level students; university students; mature applicants who wish to expand their knowledge of the Homeric epics. Our principal concern is to provide a thorough programme of language learning in a lively university environment. \nCalligraphy Workshop (Tuesday 18 – Friday 21 July 2017) \nWrite Homer like the Humanists – a Practical Course with Patricia Lovett MBE (professional scribe and illuminator) £20 supplement to cover tools and materials costs \nThe Humanists rediscovered the classics\, including Homer\, and developed what they considered to be an ‘antique’ writing style to suit the ancient texts. In fact the script was based on Carolingian Minuscule of the ninth century\, but with Renaissance twists. Learn how to write this script\, then write out a short section from Homer in Alexander Pope’s translation on calfskin vellum. \nAll tools and materials supplied\, along with exemplar worksheets to take home. Beginners welcome. \nThe plan: \nDay 1 \nIntroduction to Calligraphy\, nib angle\, stroke sequence\, letter-forms and writing minuscule letters \nDay 2 \nMajuscule letters – shape\, Square Capitals\, Renaissance Capitals \nDay 3 \nWriting with a small nib\, selection of text\, writing the text\, layout and design\, vellum and vellum preparation \nDay 4 \nWriting the text on vellum\, small exhibition at the end of the day \nProgramme\, Cost and Application form \n\nThe programme for the Summer School in Homer can be found here. Please note: this programme is still subject to change.\nThe cost of the Summer School is £110 and you can pay here. This includes all tuition\, but not accommodation or travel expenses.\n\nEnquiries: please email the Summer School. All completed application forms should be returned\, to be received no later than Monday 10th July 2017\, to: \n \nThe Director\, Dr Antony Makrinos\nThe Summer School in Homer\nc/o Department of Greek and Latin\nUniversity College London\nGower Street\nLondon\nWC1E 6BT \n\nEmail homersummerschool@ucl.ac.uk\nWatch an interview with Dr Antony Makrinos on the Summer School in Homer.\n\nBursaries \nWe are pleased to offer 4 bursaries of £100 (courtesy of the Classical Association) and 5 bursaries of £50 (courtesy of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies). For more information please contact Dr Antony Makrinos at a.makrinos@ucl.ac.uk by Monday 10 July 2017 at the latest. \nUseful information \n\nHow to find us\n\nUniversity College London’s Bloomsbury campus is located close to Euston station. A map of the campus and information on individual venues can be found here. \n\nWe are well served by public transport. Information on local bus and tube services can be found here.\nAccommodation\n\nThe Summer School is non-residential. However\, students who require somewhere to stay can (subject to availability) arrange accommodation in a University of London Hall of Residence. SUMMARY:Sutton Trust Summer School in Classics and Ancient History
DESCRIPTION:Following on from the huge success of last year’s programme\, from Monday 7th – Friday 11th August 2017 The University of Warwick will once again be hosting the Sutton Trust Summer School in Classics and Ancient History. \nThe Sutton Trust Summer Schools are free\, subject-specific residential courses for Year 12/Lower Sixth (or S5 in Scotland or equivalent) students from UK state-maintained schools. The summer schools are designed to provide academically-able students from non-privileged backgrounds with the opportunity to experience life at a leading university. \nThe summer school programme on offer in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at The University of Warwick promises an innovative and stimulating insight into the value of studying Classics and/or Ancient History at university.  We aim to inspire and develop a passion for the study of the Ancient World and its continuing relevance to the modern day. \nAs well as the opportunity to experience the ancient languages at the appropriate level (beginners included)\, participants will be exposed to ancient history\, philosophy\, literature\, art and architecture\, sexuality and gender studies\, mythology\, religion\, and ancient medicine\, thus illustrating the breadth of the discipline and its multi-faceted appeal.  Students will also discover the influence of the Classical Civilisations on even on the most modern visual media. Moreover\, the course will provide the opportunity to handle coins and artefacts from our departmental collections. \nIn this way\, we plan to offer an exciting introduction to Classics at university level for those who have a fundamental interest in the subject but have not had the opportunity to study it before; as well as push those who have studied Classics to go beyond the traditional school syllabus. \nNo previous knowledge/formal study of the ancient world required.  Students do NOT need to have studied Latin or Ancient Greek.\n \nThe programme is completely free of charge. The Sutton Trust and the university will meet all costs incurred by students\, including travel to and from the summer schools\, food and accommodation\, and all trips and activities. \nFor further information on the summer school\, including instructions on how to apply\, see the Warwick Summer School website: \nhttp://warwick.ac.uk/wstss  – or contact outreach@warwick.ac.uk (024 7657 3555). \nFor the report and photographs of last year’s summer school\, please feel free to visit the following webpage: \nhttp://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/classics/research/outreach/suttontrustsummerschool/ \nApplications for the 2017 programme will close at 17.00 on Thursday\, 2nd March 2017.  All teacher verifications must subsequently be submitted by 17.00 on Thursday\, 9th March 2017. \nThe University will write to you directly by Friday\, 5th May to confirm the outcome of your application.

SUMMARY:The Greek Project - Greek Study Tour Holidays with Intellectual Bite
DESCRIPTION:Now here’s something to tempt you… \nAdventures in Greek Language – On the Beach\, Halkidiki peninsula\, 4 – 10 Sept 2017 \nHere’s an opportunity to get out your basic or rusty Greek and transform it into a genuinely conversational vehicle. And in a fabulously quiet Halkidiki environment\, with a hotel to die for\, not to say stunning views to nearby Mount Athos and out to sea. Our intensive language course is aimed at accelerating your spoken\, reading and writing skills and for which our course tutor\, Ellie\, is quite simply the perfect guide. In each four hour morning session she’ll be putting different aspects of situational Greek into their wider social and cultural contexts supported by video\, newspaper\, magazines\, film\, poetry and song – in short language-learning as fun. But with the hotel on the seashore and with lovely food besides\, this will be a language course you’ll quickly relax into and from which you’ll savour every moment. \nAdventures in Greek comes to you auspices of the Greek Project\, an exciting new study-tour initiative coming out of the jaws of a horrible economic crisis. Each of our study tours are geared towards people who want some intellectual stimulation as part of their wider enjoyment of going on holiday. If you’d like to find out more about ‘Adventures in Greek’ and our other study-tours go to the Greek Project http://www.greekproject.co.uk or simply contact us at info@greekproject.co.uk
