She has published extensively on the neuroscience of consciousness and her most recent book discusses the impact of technology on the brain. \nAs an academic\, she can count Senior Research Fellow at Lincoln College\, Oxford University and Professor of Synaptic Pharmacology\, Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh between 2005 and 2013\, director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain from 1998 to 2010\, and in September 2013\, she co-founded the biotech company Neuro-bio Ltd\, where she is Chief Executive Officer. In 1994\, she was the first woman to be invited to give the Royal Institution Christmas Lecture\, adding her name to a list that includes the likes of Michael Farraday\, David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins. \nSo why\, I can hear you asking\, has the Department of Classics invited her to St Gabriel’s? Delphi through the ages.\nProfessor Michael Scott \nDelphi was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the centre of the world; a spectacularly beautiful religious site perched precariously on the slopes of Mt Parnassus. A visit to Delphi still takes the breath away. The site of the famous oracle\, the city attracted visitors from all over the ancient world. As well as visiting to hear the wisdom of the oracle\, people flocked to the sanctuary to show off their riches and to boast about their victories in battle. \nMichael Scott is an Associate Professor in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick\, author of several books on ancient Greek and Roman society (including one on Delphi)\, and has written and presented a range of documentaries for National Geographic\, History Channel\, ITV and the BBC. He has most recently been seen on television presenting Sicily: Wonder of the Mediterranean and Italy’s Invisible Cities (with Alexander Armstrong). On the pretext of curbing an imminent barbarian threat to the Roman Republic\, he subjugated the Celtic peoples who occupied the territory of what is now France. Caesar laid Gallic civilisation to waste\, but within half a century of the conquest the Romans had begun to remake Gaul in their own image. Mr Omrani’s talk looks not only at what drew the Romans to invade\, but how they changed Gaul over 500 years of occupation\, and laid the foundations for the modern European civilisation to come. \nMr Omrani has taught classics at Eton and Westminster\, and is the author of several books. He read Classics and English at Lincoln College\, Oxford\, before going on to write and research on the history of Afghanistan\, the Silk Road and Central Asia\, as well as Roman history and the development of Greek thought. We are delighted to announce that Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill will be speaking about Pompeii and Herculaneum. \nAndrew is Director of Research and Professor of Roman Studies in the Faculty of Classics at the University of Cambridge. Since 2001 he has led the Herculaneum Conservation Project for the Packard Humanities Institute. Andrew was awarded an OBE in 2002 for services to Anglo-Italian cultural relations\, and elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2010. Author of several books on Roman social and cultural history\, he has taken a particular interest in the Bay of Naples.
