SUMMARY:Ancient Astronomy Day at the East Oxford Community Classics Centre
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 20th January\, we are delighted to announce that the East Oxford Community Classics Centre will be running an Ancient Astronomy Day!\nThe day will involve a series of workshops and lectures run throughout the day by the British Sundial Society on Greek and Roman sundials\, as well as Professor Mike Edmunds from the University of Cardiff who will be speaking to groups about the Antikythera Mechanism. As well as these sessions\, there will be information and activity stalls during lunch time and after school. \n\nAs part of this exciting day event\, we will be offering two community events: \nCommunity workshop on Roman sundials\nrun by the British Sundial Society team\n3.30 – 4.30pm \nCommunity lecture on the Antikythera Mechanism\nby Professor Mike Edmunds\n6-7pm\nfollowed by questions and drinks\nIf you would like to attend either of these events\, please book by emailing info@irisproject.org.uk\n\nVisit www.eoccc.org.uk for details of our events\, projects and courses.

DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 21 January at 4.30 pm\, Dr Stephen Heyworth will be speaking on: \n‘The Metamorphoses as an Epic of Change’ \nDr Heyworth is Bowra Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Wadham College\, Oxford. He will be focusing his talk on Book 3 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses\, the AS level verse set text this year. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. DESCRIPTION:“Today has taught me that Greek theatre is still just as important in today’s society.” “Well done to all involved -­ the students said they haven’t laughed so much in ages!” Testimonial from students attending the Ancient Drama Day 2014 \nThe students and staff at the University of Warwick Department of Classics would like to invite teachers and students to our annual ancient drama day for schools on Tuesday 27th January 2015.  \nThe day will focus around a special schools’ performance of Aristophanes Thesmophoriazusae\, produced and directed by the Classics students at Warwick (translated into English by Clive Letchford\, Teaching Fellow in the department)\, to be performed in the main theatre of Warwick University’s prestigious Arts Centre. This event will be part of Warwick University’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. \nSupporting the performance\, we are organising a series of lectures and seminars specifically for school students to link in with Latin\, Greek\, Classical Civilisation\, Ancient History\, Drama and English syllabuses at GCSE and AS/A2 (no previous knowledge of the subject area or play will be expected). These include: \n–     An introduction to the world of ancient theatre \n–     An examination of the main themes of the Thesmophoriazusae \n–     A comparison of the different forms of ancient comedy \n–     Close analysis of several ancient comedies and their relationship to tragedy \n–     An investigation into the links between ancient drama and modern drama \n–     A study of the place of women within ancient Greek culture \n–     A workshop on the problems and opportunities of producing ancient drama in \nthe modern era \nThe day will begin at 11am and finish at 5pm. Detailed timings will be announced in due course. DESCRIPTION:The Classics Department at Francis Holland School will be continuing its annual tradition of holding a day devoted to the AS level Latin set texts on Friday 30th January 2015. \nIngo Gildenhard from Cambridge University and Fiachra MacGóráin from University College\, London\, who did such splendid job last year\, will be coming again this year to enthuse and inform this years’ AS Latinists on Ovid Metamorphoses III and Cicero de Imperio.  Each of them will give two  lectures on different aspects of the texts and contexts. \nThe conference will be from 10am till 3pm.  Generous refreshments will be provided for morning coffee and in between lectures\, but not lunch\, which should be taken off -premises.  There is a charge of £10 per person to cover costs.
