The courses are primarily aimed at postgraduate students in diverse disciplines who need to acquire a knowledge of either of the languages for further study and research\, and at teachers whose schools would like to reintroduce Latin and Greek into their curriculum. DESCRIPTION:Summer School in Ancient Languages\nLatin\, Greek\, and Hieroglyphs\nDepartment of History and Classics \nSwansea University  \n19 July – 1 August 2015 \n \nThe first Summer School in Ancient Languages will take place at Swansea University in July 2015. Please note that the online application will available by the end of October 2014. If you have queries before that time\, please contact the Summer School Director\, Dr Evelien Bracke (e.bracke@swansea.ac.uk).There will be intensive courses on Beginners\, Intermediate\, and Advanced Latin and Greek\, as well as Beginners Hieroglyphs\, which correspond to one semester of the language at university. Courses are open to all ages 13+. 13-16 year olds are welcome when accompanied by an adult who takes full responsibility for the child. \nThe courses will be taught on the campus of Swansea University which won the WhichUni gold award for Best University in 2014: we have the Egypt Centre on site\, Swansea beach is but a minute’s walk away\, a short bus trip will get participants to the city centre with museums (Swansea Museum\, Waterfront Museum\, Dylan Thomas Centre etc.) and the Marina\, and the beautiful Gower peninsula can be reached by bus from the city centre for those interested in exploring its history and nature. With the many historical sites (not just Roman)\, the National Botanic Gardens\, National Trust and CADW properties all at less than 40 minutes away\, we’re ideally located for a language-intensive course with plenty of scope for exploring South Wales. \nClassics and Ancient History came third in the National Student Survey 2014\, which demonstrates our strong commitment to student experience. DESCRIPTION:Wolfson College\, Barton Road\, Cambridge CB3 9BB\, United Kingdom | Tel: 01223 762356 | Email: skc1000@cam.ac.uk \nA Holiday History Camp for Secondary and Sixth-Form Students: 19-20 August 2015 \n\nIf you are thinking of applying to university to study humanities in the future\, and want something to add to your personal statement\nWhether you are interested in classics and the ancient world\, or just want to enrich your CV\nIf you already have Greek language in GCSE or A levels\, or you don’t know any Greek at all\nWhether you’d like to learn and use the Greek alphabet\, or work entirely in English\n\nCome and join us for a two-day adventure in the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge. We will introduce you to the expeditions and conquests of Alexander the Great through the text of Arrian (2nd century CE). We will make electronic maps of his journey using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software\, while also discussing key issues such as heroism\, politics\, empire and conquest. At the end of the two days you will\nreceive a certificate of participation. You will also be able to: \n\nImprove your knowledge of geography and history\nImprove your ability to discuss and debate historical issues\nReceive training in using mapping software\nDevelop research\, IT and other skills\nExperience working collaboratively in a team\nExperience something of what it is like to study at the University of Cambridge\, to be in the same environment and use the same equipment and software that researchers use for mapping and recording historical and archaelogical information\n\nThe Camp will last for two days (19-20 August 2015)\, from 9:30 to 3:30 each day\, with a one-hour lunch break\, a visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum\, a tour of Cambridge and other activities. \nIt is run by Civilizations in Contact\, registered charity No. 1148995\, affiliated with the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies\, University of Cambridge. It will be led by a postdoctoral researcher with a Cambridge PhD and a PhD student in the Faculty of Education\, as well as several adult helpers. The project follows on from a successful project on this topic run during the Easter holidays (http://www.research.ames.cam.ac.uk/research-groups/chinastudies-\nrg/public-policy-engagement/historycamp). \nThe charge of £50 per day for the two days (£100 per person) includes teaching\, materials\, the museum visit and the tour. A small number of bursaries are available on receipt of a letter from the school confirming the need. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be offering introductory Latin and Ancient Greek language classes and activities this summer at the East Oxford Community Classics Centre. The purpose of the summer school is to provide lively introductions to Latin and Ancient Greek across three days for a range of ages in a friendly and stimulating environment. \nThe format for each day will be as follows (it is expected that students will choose one class for the duration of the school): \n9 – 10.30 – Latin (ages 7 – 10); Latin (ages 11 – 14); Greek (ages 7 – 10); Greek (ages 11 – 14) \n10.30 – 11.15 – refreshments and activities \n11.15 – 12.45 – Latin (ages 7 – 10); Latin (ages 11 – 14); Greek (ages 7 – 10); Greek (ages 11 – 14) \nThe classes will be run by experienced teachers and will include activities as well as language learning.
