SUMMARY:The Ancient Guide to Modern Life: Natalie Haynes at STREAM South London Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:THE ANCIENT GUIDE TO MODERN LIFE           \nWITH NATALIE HAYNES \nAT STREAM SOUTH LONDON BOOK FESTIVAL \n12 NOON – 1.00 PM    SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2015 \nThe multi-talented Natalie Haynes\, writer (non-fiction: The Ancient Guide to Modern Life\, fiction: Amber Fury\, children’s book: The Great Escape)\, critic and broadcaster\, classicist and former stand-up comic\, with The Ancient Guide to Modern Life. \nWhether political\, cultural or social\, there are endless parallels between the ancient and modern worlds. Whether it’s the murder of Caesar or the political assassination of Thatcher; the narrative arc of the hit HBO series The Wire or that of Oedipus; the popular enthusiasm for the Emperor Titus or President Obama – over and over again we can be seen to be living very much like people did 2\,000 or more years ago. Our lives are infinitely richer if we take the time to look at what the Greeks and Romans have given us in politics and law\, religion and philosophy and education\, and to learn how people really lived in Athens\, Rome\, Sparta and Alexandria. \nNatalie Haynes takes us through a lively and humorous re-examination of the ancient world and its relevance to modern life. \nSTREAM2015\, Streatham & Clapham High School\, 42 Abbotswood Rd\, London SW16 1AW. \nFor further information visit www.STREAM2015.co.uk

SUMMARY:Why Greek is still a living language and Latin isn't: a talk by Dr Rupert Thompson
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 16th November at 4.30 pm\, Dr Rupert Thompson will be speaking on: \n‘Why Greek is still a living language and Latin isn’t’ \nLatin is universally held to be a ‘dead language’\, but Greek has since antiquity been the language of the Hellenic people and remains the official language of Greece and Cyprus to the present day. What is meant by a ‘dead language’? How do languages ‘die’? And what accounts for the different fates of Latin and Greek? \nRupert Thompson is Lecturer in Classics (Philology and Linguistics) and Fellow of Selwyn College\, Cambridge. He has a particular interest in historical and comparative linguistics. \nThe talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge. \nThe address of the school is St Paul’s Girls’ School\, Brook Green\, London\, W6 7BS; main telephone 020 7603 2288. The nearest tube is Hammersmith. \nAll are welcome\, but if you or your pupils would like to attend\, please email Gregory Wilsdon at gregory.wilsdon@spgs.org with expected numbers as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday 13th November.

SUMMARY:Electra: A Production at St Mary's College\, Crosby
DESCRIPTION:News of a forthcoming production… \nWe are setting the play in the slums of New Orleans with a live Jazz band accompanying the Choral Odes and we have been strongly influenced by the horror genre in our approach. \nThe play will be performed at St Mary’s College in Crosby on the 20th November and in the Stanley Theatre at the University of Liverpool on the 23rd November. Please email electra@stmarys.lpool.sch.uk for details. \nI am very confident that bringing students to this play would have a positive effect in the classroom regarding the key themes and the situation on stage. We even have a severed head!

SUMMARY:Perspectives on Greek History: A Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day on the history of ancient Greece and its teaching
DESCRIPTION:Perspectives on Greek History: \nA Classical Association Teaching Board INSET day on the history of ancient Greece and its teaching \nUniversity of Leeds\, 10am-4pm\, Saturday\, 21st November 2015. \n  \nThe teaching of classical Greek history is rewarding – for both teacher and student — at every level of engagement: it gives its practitioners the opportunity to explore\, within a single historical era\, the workings of exciting subjects like identity\, warfare\, democracy\, and social memory. But it entails also profound challenges: how do we teach the ‘history’ of a period for which the chronology is flimsy and the sources are deeply moralistic\, often fragmentary\, and sometimes intertwined with political and mythographical perspectives? In this INSET day\, lectures and workshops will assess the relationship between Greek literature\, historiography\, political philosophy and history. We will discuss the image of Greek history in modern media; we will\, in association with the Leeds Museum\, explore the perspectives that material evidence can introduce to the study of Greek history. There will also be a forum for discussion of the future of ancient history and the prospects for the new OCR specifications. \nThe event is designed to support those who already teach or would like to teach Greek history topics in the classroom (at any level: Key Stage 2\, GCSE\, A-Level\, Continuing Education)\, and we anticipate that it will offer something to established\, new and prospective teachers of Ancient History and Classical Civilisation. \nRegistration for the event is free\, and includes coffee and lunch. All those who sign up for the event will be required to confirm their attendance at the start of November. Owing to the generosity of Leeds University and the support of the Classical Association Teaching Board\, we are able to offer a small number of (limited) travel bursaries. \nTo register for the even\, please do so electronically: https://greek-history-inset.eventbrite.co.uk/ \nIf you wish to apply for a travel bursary\, please email Dr. Peter Liddel at Peter.Liddel@manchester.ac.uk\, who will supply an application form. The deadline for bursary applications is Thursday October 1st\, and preference will be give to applicants who have no access to institutional support (e.g. from their school or other employer). \n  \nPlenary sessions: \nDr Emma Stafford (University of Leeds): ‘The curse of 300? Popular culture and teaching the Spartans’ \nDr Natalie Burns (Leeds Museum): The Greek antiquities in the Leeds Museum: A Guided Tour \nDr Peter Liddel (University of Manchester): ‘Greek Inscriptions: resources and insights in the classroom and beyond’. \n  \nWorkshops (when booking\, please specify\, in order of preference\, which you would be interested in attending): \nNina Wallace (Queen Mary’s College\, Basingstoke): ‘Making Thucydides accessible for all AS/A-Level students’ \nAlexander Orgee (OCR): ‘Changes to the Ancient History specifications’ \nDr Roger Brock (University of Leeds): ‘Looking afresh at Herodotus’ Persian Wars’ \nDavid Hodgkinson (St Helen and St Katharine\, Abingdon): ‘Socrates in Context’
