SUMMARY:LATIN CAMP 2023 (Mon 24th July to Sat 5th AUGUST)
DESCRIPTION:From David Stephenson…\n\n \n\nDear Colleagues\,\n\n \n\nI am delighted to announce that we have now opened for applications to join us this summer – please visit www.latincamp.co.uk for full details and simple online application. 2023 dates are Monday 24th July to Saturday 5th August\, once again at Harrogate Ladies’ College after a hugely successful second Camp there in 2022. The website has full details on all our different courses suitable for school students and how we feel each age group will benefit. It also contains details on such things as our costs\, our tutors (who come almost entirely from teaching backgrounds and usually at highly regarded UK schools)\, the facilities and accommodation\, our typical programme of events\, our policy on U18 students and hopefully a feel for “Camp life” generally.\n\n \n\nThe usual minimum age is post-Y10 but we will consider post-Y9 students if they have studied Latin for at least three years or wish to join a beginners’ group. I attach the 2022 daily routine and programme of lectures\, grammar clinics\, trips and events which will give you an immediate idea of what we are about. I also attach my own report on the 2022 Summer School and our fliers for this coming summer. (Hard copies of these will reach schools shortly.) I would be grateful if you pass all this on to anyone at all who might be interested.\n\n \n\nWe also have various bespoke courses for teachers so if you know someone new to Latin teaching (this could equally be an NQT or an experienced teacher of another subject)\, please do pass this onto them. (We can usually secure at least partial funding for places on these courses.)\n\n \n\nAt our core is the intensive preparation and reading of Latin texts. This happens formally in small teaching sets of very similar ability and experience but far more unquantifiable learning happens in all the “in-between” moments\, be they in groups between lessons sat out in the sun\, or at night in the boarding houses. That said\, Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff\, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz\, the site visits\, the staff play\, the costume party. It’s about discovering\, identifying with and joining a wider community of classicists\, making contacts and friends for life.\n\n \n\nPlease do not hesitate to email me (d.stephenson@warwickschool.org) if you have any questions or indeed suggestions – I would love to hear from you.\n\n \n\nYours sincerely\,\n\n \n\nDavid Stephenson\nDirector\nJACT Latin Summer School

SUMMARY:Summer School in Homer 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Summer School in Homer will be held onsite and online with hybrid teaching in London\, UK from Monday 31 July to Friday 4 August 2023 and in Chios\, Greece from Monday 28 August to Friday 1 September 2023.\n\n \n\nThe Summer School offers five days of intensive teaching of Homeric language and literature. There will be four language or literature classes each day as well as lectures\, talks and roundtables\, between 10.30 and 16.30. The course is not residential.\n\n \n\nTeaching will be generally in groups of 15-20 people which\, as far as possible\, comprise students of roughly the same level of experience (beginners\, intermediate or advanced). The style of teaching is friendly\, but demanding: a lot of work is expected from students during the School\, but they should find the whole experience both stimulating and valuable. Some classes concentrate chiefly on reading texts\, while others offer a mixture of grammar and translation practice. Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Classics in the London area and beyond.\n\n \nFURTHER DETAILS AND TO BOOK
