JOB | Head of Classics, Nower Hill High School

‘An outstanding school’
Roll:    2020 (1620 + 400 in an A level 6th Form)

TLR 2b (£4,792 per annum) – Outer London pay scale

September 2022 start.  Full time.

We are seeking a talented, passionate teacher of Classics to lead the Classics Department from September 2022. You will be an experienced practitioner with excellent pedagogical knowledge, superb communication skills, and a firm commitment to widening access to classical subjects for students of all backgrounds and abilities. The ability to teach Classics and Latin at all key stages is essential; the ability to teach Ancient Greek (or willingness to learn) would be an advantage. This is an exciting opportunity for a current or future middle leader to lead a large department of specialists.

The Classics Department at Nower Hill is a very special place to teach. It comprises five specialist Classics teachers and offers all classical subjects, which is rare in the state sector. All Year 7 students study our homemade Classics course as well as Oracy, within which we teach speaking skills such as storytelling via the story of the Trojan War. Our Year 8s can opt to study Latin as one of their two languages. Latin is a popular option; nearly half the current year group have chosen to study it. We use the Cambridge Latin Course all the way through into GCSE alongside teaching the other elements of the Eduqas syllabus. Classical Civilisation and Ancient History are both offered at GCSE. Students may continue with Latin and Classical Civilisation at A-Level. We are very proud to be able to offer Ancient Greek as an extracurricular option from Year 7 onwards. We currently have our first group of AS students, making us one of only a very few state schools in the country offering Ancient Greek in the sixth form.

The Head of Classics is also responsible for overseeing a wide range of extracurricular activities. In addition to Greek, there is a thriving Classics Club, which is run by Year 12 and Year 13 students and we regularly organise study days and trips to destinations both at home and abroad. Our biannual trip to Italy or Greece is the highlight of many students’ school experience and anticipated with great excitement!

As a department, we constantly strive to improve our practice and benefit from a strong whole-school culture of professional development and a dynamic, ‘can-do’ attitude. You will be privileged to lead a team of experienced, supportive colleagues with deep and extensive subject knowledge, who constantly seek to learn from each other and plan collaboratively as much as possible. In addition, we host two PGCE trainee teachers each year, who are usually mentored by the Head of Classics.

Nower Hill is a warm, friendly place to work and enjoys an excellent reputation in the local community. Places are heavily oversubscribed. Used to high standards and expectations, our students are enthusiastic, hardworking and a pleasure to teach.
