JOB | Head of Classics, Winchester College

Head of Classics

Winchester College seeks to appoint a well-qualified Head of Classics to provide inspirational and visionary leadership and management of this lively and thriving department. The successful candidate will teach throughout the school.

Winchester College is a boys’ boarding school of 700 pupils. It was founded in 1382, and is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious schools. Its Classical tradition is long-standing: no school, for example, has produced more Regius Professors of Greek.  The school’s examination results are excellent and our rigorous curriculum is complemented by a very wide range of sport, music, art, drama and other co-curricular activities.  Through our non-examined general cultural studies programme (known as Div) we offer an approach to education which develops an intelligent and critical awareness of the world, strong communication skills and a confident ability to think independently and with originality. The successful applicant may be asked to teach Div.

The Department of Classics consists of twelve teachers. All boys take GCSE Latin, and each year between 14 and 20 continue their studies into the sixth form. Greek is an optional subject throughout the school: there are between 20 and 30 in each year group in the Lower School (years 9-11), and up to a dozen regularly pursue the subject into the sixth form.

The department’s examination results are admirable. Every year a number of boys go on to study classical subjects at university, and our Oxbridge record is enviable. From September 2020, the department will be delivering the OCR A-level course in Latin and Greek to boys starting in the Lower Sixth.

This post will appeal to excellent teachers who will relish the challenge of working with able and articulate pupils in a historic site of unparalleled architectural beauty in the heart of Winchester.

Many of our full-time teachers act as tutors in one of the boarding houses, thereby making a significant contribution to the pastoral care of our pupils. In addition to this, it is hoped that the successful applicant will contribute in some capacity to our sports and co-curricular programme.

Further information about the school can be found at www.winchestercollege.org.

This position includes a generous benefits package including appropriate housing.
