JOB | Teacher of Classics, Reading Blue Coat

An Independent Day School for Boys with a Co-Educational Sixth Form

To start in September 2021

Founded in 1646, Reading Blue Coat is a leading independent day school of 785 pupils; 705 boys aged 11 – 18 and a further 80 girls in the co-educational sixth form. The School is located on a beautiful 46 acre campus in the village of Sonning, just outside Reading.

The School employs over 170 staff, of whom 50% are academic staff. The School provides a stimulating, friendly and supportive atmosphere in which each pupil can realise his or her full intellectual, physical and creative potential.

An enthusiastic and inspiring teacher with outstanding subject knowledge is required from September 2021 to teach Latin and Classical Civilisation to A level. Greek is welcome, but not essential.

The Classics Department provides a stimulating and interesting curriculum, introducing pupils to Latin and the ancient world and supporting them in their endeavours throughout the school.  The number of pupils studying the subjects have increased significantly over the last two years. Broadening the pupils’ interest and engagement with the Classical world is paramount to the department’s philosophy.  To this end, a number of field trips, co-curricular activities and clubs are on offer to facilitate this.

Applicants should have a good Honours degree relevant to the teaching aspects of the role, and will preferably have qualified teacher status, although the School will accept applicants who are on an accredited programme working towards Qualified Teacher Status.

We also welcome applications from people seeking a new career in teaching Classics and Latin, with support provided by the School for you to pursue a PGCE with Buckingham University through part time study. We have some excellent role models as “career changers” on our academic staff!

You will be expected to contribute to the co-curricular offerings of the department and the wider life of the School, to which your energy, warmth and pastoral instincts will lend themselves.

Reading Blue Coat School has been recognised by the Daily Telegraph as one of ten independent schools offering the best value in the UK.

Rented single room accommodation during the first year of employment may be available on campus if required.
