The RGS Guildford Classics Department is one of the largest and most successful Classics departments in the country.  Eight members of staff teach Latin and Greek from beginners through to A Level and Oxbridge preparation. Last year the Department began teaching Ancient History in the Sixth Form. Throughout the School, the number of boys studying Classical subjects is strong and the grades achieved in public examinations at all levels are very high.  No less importantly, students enjoy the opportunity to study ancient languages with a focus on the rich cultural, social and historical context using a diverse range of resources.  The Classics library and electronic resources available to the boys offer a wide range of texts to supplement the students’ study and allow them to pursue their interests independently.

All boys in the First to Third Forms (Years 7 to 9) study Latin using the Cambridge Latin Course.  Greek is an optional subject in the Third Form (Year 9) using Greek to GCSE (Taylor) as a course book; Latin and Greek become GCSE options in the Fourth Form (Year 10).  The success rate in public examinations is excellent with the vast majority of GCSE candidates achieving an 8 or 9.  At A Level, numbers are strong and Latin, Greek and Ancient History are studied.  The results at A Level have been equally impressive, with the vast majority of students achieving an A or A* grade.  The Department has an excellent record at university level with a number of boys each year going on to study Classical subjects at university.

The Classics Department organises trips to visit sites of classical interest both nationally and internationally.  As well as running trips to Bath, Fishbourne, Bignor and the British Museum, the Department runs Junior Classics trips to Rome and the Bay of Naples and Senior trips to Greece and Sicily and in the past we have also visited Tunisia and Turkey. The boys also enjoy regular opportunities to watch productions of Greek plays and to attend conferences and talks put on by the local classical association; in addition, the School has its own thriving Junior and Senior Classics Societies.

The Classics Department is housed in a new teaching block and has four Classics classrooms, each with an interactive whiteboard. The Department has a Classics office for staff to work in, where each member of staff has their own desk and storage space.
