JOB | Teacher of Classics, Sheffield Girls’

Teacher of Classics

Location: Sheffield Girls’, 10 Rutland Park, Sheffield, S10 2PE
Required from: ASAP
Hours: Part-time
Salary: Competitive plus benefits
Contract: Maternity cover

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Classics teacher with a passion for their subject to join our high performing staff team and teach well motivated students.

This is a temporary position to cover a maternity leave and we are looking for someone to start as soon as possible. This position is a part-time role, equating to approximately 50% and will be until the end of the academic year or until November 2022.

The Classics are popular at Sheffield Girls’ and we offer both Latin and Classical Civilisation at A Level, achieving excellent results. We seek to appoint someone who will be committed to maintaining and promoting the role of Classics in the school.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach Latin to GCSE and some elements of the Classical Civilisation course at A Level. There is also the opportunity to teach Ancient Greek GCSE for an individual who may offer the necessary skills and experience.

The post is suitable for newly qualified and experienced teachers.

The Department

The Classics department, which is part of a lively and vigorous languages faculty, is very successful and well-established. The department works hard to encourage confident use of ancient languages and foster an enjoyment of ancient literature and culture.

Latin is offered at both GCSE (Eduqas) and A Level (OCR), and Classical Civilisation (OCR) is also a popular option. We offer Homer’s Odyssey, Virgil’s Aeneid, Imperial Image and Greek Religion as the different components for Classical Civilisation. Ancient Greek is offered as an extra-curricular GCSE (OCR). We run a Classics Club for Year 6, in which we introduce Latin and Ancient Greek language, alongside the history and mythology, with the help of our Classics Prefects.

We take advantage of opportunities for theatre visits, lectures and competitions, and run inter-house Latin reading competitions, often enjoying a great deal of success at regional Latin reading competitions. Further support is offered for EPQs and Oxbridge preparation. Each year, our students go on to study classical subjects at top universities.
