JOB | Teacher of Latin, The Grammar School at Leeds

The Grammar School at Leeds is seeking an inspirational and talented Teacher of Latin to join the school from September 2022.

The Classics department’s primary focus is to make the Ancient World both as accessible and exciting as possible to all ages and abilities. Classical subjects are embedded in the modern world and students are often amazed to see how language, literature, art and history all owe a great debt to the Romans and Greeks.

The Classics department is headed by Mr. Martin Gibson and he is currently supported by a team of three other teachers (some of whom are part-time or who teach in other departments). One of the department’s strengths is its collaborative and supportive atmosphere; members of the department are ready to share their ideas and pupils know that colleagues are on hand to provide helpful advice.

In recent years, the department has been building up its profile; trips abroad (to Greece, Italy and Sicily) and within England (Royal Armouries, Hadrian’s Wall), successes in regional (Leeds University’s Reading Competition) and national (Vocab Express) competitions and initiatives such as “Parents Latin Classes” have occurred. Examination results are consistently excellent and many of our current sixth form students will be going on to study a component of the classical world at university.

You will have strong and relevant qualifications, a teaching qualification, the ability to teach Latin at A Level and be committed to playing a full departmental role. The ability to teach Spanish or classical civilisation would be a distinct advantage.  You will also have effective classroom management skills and be able to teach, inspire and engage pupils across the senior school age range (11-18 years).

Closing date: 08:00 on 21 February 2022
