Part Time (approx 0.5) Classics Post: Maternity cover
FOR SEPTEMBER 2012

The Classics Department

The Classics Department is very strong and consists of three full-time members of staff and two part-timers.
All girls begin Latin in Year 8. Latin is part of the core curriculum and, although a few drop it after three years, the vast majority continue with a four-year course to GCSE level. The Cambridge Latin Course is used with some modifications to systematise the grammatical content. Girls may choose to start Greek in Year 10, taking a two-year course to GCSE level. Each year between twelve and fifteen girls opt for the subject. Athenaze is used as the course book.

In the Sixth Form there are courses in Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation (OCR) to A2 level. These courses attract large numbers and there are normally two sets for Latin in the Lower and Upper Sixth years, and one set for Classical Civilisation, and one for Greek. Each year girls go
on to study Classics, Ancient History, Classical Civilisation etc. at university, with a very good success rate at Oxbridge entrance.

The Department is very well provided with books and other audio-visual resources And has four dedicated rooms. Each year trips are made to Bath, Cirencester, St. Albans and London. Trips abroad to Italy and Greece are regularly undertaken.
