A Holiday History Camp for Secondary and Sixth-Form Students: 19-20 August 2015
- If you are thinking of applying to university to study humanities in the future, and want something to add to your personal statement
- Whether you are interested in classics and the ancient world, or just want to enrich your CV
- If you already have Greek language in GCSE or A levels, or you don’t know any Greek at all
- Whether you’d like to learn and use the Greek alphabet, or work entirely in English
Come and join us for a two-day adventure in the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge. We will introduce you to the expeditions and conquests of Alexander the Great through the text of Arrian (2nd century CE). We will make electronic maps of his journey using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, while also discussing key issues such as heroism, politics, empire and conquest. At the end of the two days you will
receive a certificate of participation. You will also be able to:
- Improve your knowledge of geography and history
- Improve your ability to discuss and debate historical issues
- Receive training in using mapping software
- Develop research, IT and other skills
- Experience working collaboratively in a team
- Experience something of what it is like to study at the University of Cambridge, to be in the same environment and use the same equipment and software that researchers use for mapping and recording historical and archaelogical information
The Camp will last for two days (19-20 August 2015), from 9:30 to 3:30 each day, with a one-hour lunch break, a visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum, a tour of Cambridge and other activities.
It is run by Civilizations in Contact, registered charity No. 1148995, affiliated with the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge. It will be led by a postdoctoral researcher with a Cambridge PhD and a PhD student in the Faculty of Education, as well as several adult helpers. The project follows on from a successful project on this topic run during the Easter holidays (http://www.research.ames.cam.ac.uk/research-groups/chinastudies-
rg/public-policy-engagement/historycamp).
The charge of £50 per day for the two days (£100 per person) includes teaching, materials, the museum visit and the tour. A small number of bursaries are available on receipt of a letter from the school confirming the need. We can arrange accommodation at one of the Cambridge colleges (including meals) at an additional cost (£67.50 per person, per night, including bed and breakfast, dinner and a packed lunch).
