‘What did ancient Greek music sound like?’, a talk by Professor Armand D’Angour

10 May 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

FREE
On Wednesday 10 May, at 5.30pm, Professor Armand D’Angour will be giving a free online talk on ancient Greek music as the guest speaker for the Summer Term LSF Classics Lecture. ABSTRACT: What did ancient Greek music sound like? Music was ubiquitous in ancient Greece, in celebrations and ceremonies and for drama and entertainment. Surviving ancient Greek poems preserve the lyrics and the rhythms of songs, which were accompanied by instruments such as the lyre and aulos (double-pipes). The Greeks even devised a notation system in the 5th century BC, and a few dozen notated scores survive that give us a better understanding of how music sounded 2500 years ago. This talk will describe how recent research has led to new insights about the sounds of ancient music. The talk will be held on Teams. The link will be sent on the day of the talk via email.
