A Moot Trial of Alexander the Great: War Hero or War Criminal?

26 October 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

£5 – £10

Wednesday 26 October | 18:00-19:15pm | Online via YouTube

In 330 BCE, Alexander the Great’s Macedonian Army captured the city of Persepolis and burned it to the ground in a final act of revenge against Persia.

Over 2,000 years later, Alexander stands on trial for war crimes at the UK Supreme Court. He is charged with four counts of violation of the laws and customs of war. Was Alexander as ‘great’ as history has led us to believe? Read the indictment here.

His trial will be presided over by Lord Leggatt (Justice of the Supreme Court) with Philippe Sands QC counsel for the prosecution, and Patrick Gibbs QC counsel for the defence.

The prosecution will argue that Alexander was a war criminal, who committed atrocities at Persepolis as a deliberate political act. The defence will argue that the burning of Persepolis was not politically motivated. War hero or war criminal? The jury will decide.

Watch the proceedings unfold online and discover the man behind the myth…
