AD14-2014: Celebrating the bimillenium of Augustus

AD14-2014: Celebrating the bimillenium of Augustus
Thursday 19 June 2014 at Solihull School
An invitation to all Classics teachers and their pupils to a day of workshops and talks celebrating the bimillenium of the death of the Emperor Augustus.
The day will be held at Solihull School and is open to all pupils studying Classics (Latin, Ancient Greek, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History) in Years 10 and 12. The day will begin at 10am with a talk introducing Augustus, the man and the emperor, given by Dr Elena Theodorakopoulos of the University of Birmingham.
This talk will be followed by a carousel of three 1 hour activities, including writing obituaries of Augustus, discussing the Prima Porta statue and designing our own, and an examination of Augustus and Augustan literature. These sessions will be run by Solihull School staff and Dr Theodorakopoulos, with undergraduates from The University of Birmingham assisting. Pupils will take part in two of the sessions before lunch, which will be provided in our Refectory, and the third session will be held after lunch.
The day will end with a talk on Augustus and the Res Gestae given by Dr Penny Goodman of the University of Leeds. The day will finish at 4pm.
This day should be an extremely interesting and stimulating experience for all pupils, and will enrich their understanding and appreciation of Augustus and the hugely important role he played in the Roman Empire.
If you would like to find out more about the day, and to come and take part in it, please email me at .
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Joanna Johnson
