Dr Hannah Cornwell (Birmingham) will speak on:
‘The fight for the Republic: Rome’s violent words and deeds in civil war’
This lecture will look at the verbal and physical attacks that Romans made against fellow Romans during the civil wars of the late Republic, as part of the political strategies and rhetoric used to gain control of the state. It will explore just how far language and identity could be push during civil unrest, and how this could be affected by the medium of communication and questions of audience.
