Wednesday 12th May 2021, 7pm – Dr Genevieve Liveley (Bristol)
‘Homer’s AI’.
In this talk, Professor Liveley asks: What is the legacy of Homer’s intelligent machines? Beginning with Homer’s descriptions of relatively simple automata in the Iliad and Odyssey, this talk goes on to consider the more sophisticated models of artificial mind and machine cognition that these ancient poems describe, including various distinctions that Homer draws between artificial and human minds. After tracing this ancient narrative history of artificial intelligence, Dr Liveley examines its impact on contemporary debate about the nature of AI.
