Euripides’ Medea is one of the most fascinating figures in world theatre. This illustrated talk will show how much of her impact stems from the ambiguity about her identity: she is foreign yet speaks elaborate Greek, adheres to traditional Greek religion yet uses supernatural weapons, claims to be sane yet commits an enraged murder, appears to be an all-too-human abandoned wife but disappears on the theatrical machine. We can never be sure exactly who she is.​
