Forte Academy: ‘Women Latinists’: A Course in Florence

17 July 2022

Dates & Times: Sunday 17 – Sunday 31 July 2022 Location: Florence, Italy Overview Join us for two weeks under the Tuscan sun to explore women’s writing in Latin on this unique learning experience that brings language to life in the real spaces where women learnt and wrote Latin. With a strong focus on primary sources from classical antiquity up to the early modern period, you will have the chance to hone your Latin reading skills, discover new authors and discuss a range of themes on a journey through 1,500 years of writing. Our salon-style mornings will be complemented by a range of afternoon activities including special site visits and creative writing on the Arno. Who is this course suitable for? Anyone with an intermediate-advanced background in Latin, looking for more practice reading authentic texts. No experience with post-classical Latin required. This course will be of great value to taught and research students plus teachers who have had limited experience reading texts by women. Cultural Programme In the evenings, students are free to immerse themselves in the Italian dolce vita alongside their studies and join optional events on our Cultural Programme, gaining access to authentic Florentine nightlife, reading groups, spoken language events, creative writing sessions, art exhibitions and rooftop bars. Our Approach Our courses in Italy are always intellectual and practical: Included in the course fee are two creative, hands-on workshops to immerse ourselves in the world and experiences of Women Latinists over history. At Forte Academy, our seminars are highly interactive with a strong emphasis on primary sources and intellectual tool-building, so that you gain the skills to understand and research the past with “fresh eyes”. Our philosophy is to ‘Challenge the Canon‘, with occasional creative activism encouraged! Lead tutors: Skye Shirley and Florence Forte What’s Included?*
