Latin and Greek CPD Day 2021

Saturday 18th September

The Classical Association Teaching Board would like to invite teachers to an online CPD day. Date and time: Saturday 18th September, 10am – 2.30pm Participants will be given links to some pre-recorded materials and then will be invited to join some or all of the live panels (see below) where the contributors will be available to answer questions on their respective topics. The event will focus primarily on Latin, with pre-recorded videos plus live panels on Latin A-level, GCSE Latin and a small number on teaching Greek. The day will be led by practising teachers and academics and will be relevant for both experienced secondary teachers and those new to teaching Classics. Panel 1: 10.00 – 11.00

Introduction + A level Literature Panel The pre-recorded videos for this panel will focus on the following:
  • Latin verse set text for examination in 2023 and 2024: Rebecca Armstrong, St Hilda’s, Oxford on Catullus
  • Latin prose set text for examination in 2023 and 2024: Chris Burnand, Abingdon School on Cicero, pro Cluentio
  • Ancient Greek prose for examination in 2023 and 2024: Rowena Hewes, Westminster School on Plato, Symposium
  • Ancient Greek prose for examination in 2023 and 2024: Edmund Lewis, Winchester College on Thucydides, Histories 6
This panel will be chaired by Aisha Khan-Evans, King’s College London.

Panel 2: 11.15- 12.15

GCSE Literature The pre-recorded videos for this panel will focus on the following:
  • OCR Latin verse for examination in summer 2022: Alex Karski, King’s College School on Virgil, Aeneid 2
  • OCR Latin verse for examination in summer 2023 and 2024: Graham Lodge, Chelmsford County High School on Echo et Narcissus and amor
  • Eduqas GCSE Latin i) A beginners’ guide to Eduqas (video) and ii) Superstition and Magic (video + panel): Latin Literature and Sources Theme B for examination in 2022 and 2023: Henry Cullen, St Albans High School
This panel will be chaired by Stuart Macaulay, Rooks Heath School, who will also share some resources he uses for teaching literature at GCSE.

Panel 3: 13.00-14.00

Latin and Greek Language The pre-recorded videos for this panel will focus on:
  • Teaching GCSE Latin Language Teaching GCSE Latin (and Greek) Language (primarily focused on the OCR specification): John Taylor, University of Manchester
  • Teaching A level Latin Language: Katharine Radice, Stephen Perse Foundation
  • *Teaching Greek Language for the new Intermediate Certificate in Classical Greek (ICCG): Claire le Hur, Colfe’s School
*Please note there will be no pre-recorded video for this element but Claire will give a brief introduction to the new qualification on the day and will be happy to answer questions This panel will be chaired by Chris Burnand, Abingdon School.

Open forum: 14.00 – 14.30

This will be an opportunity to discuss the day and ask any further questions. Links to the videos will be sent a week before the event and the Zoom link for the day will be sent out on 17th September, after registration has closed.
