Marriage and Divorce in Ancient Rome: a talk by Professor Susan Treggiari

On Wednesday 27th January at 4.30 pm, Professor Susan Treggiari will be speaking on:
Marriage and Divorce in Ancient Rome
Marriage ‘for the sake of creating children’ was different from that of the Christian West in recent times. The talk will present selected texts (in translation) from jurists, literary sources and tombstones in order to suggest a picture of relationships between husbands and wives, especially among the upper classes during the period from 100 BC to AD 200. No knowledge of Latin or Roman history is pre-supposed.
Professor Treggiari is Honorary Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford and Professor Emeritus of Stanford University. Among her books published are Roman Marriage: Iusti Coniuges from the time of Cicero to the time of Ulpian and Roman Social History.
The talk is hosted by the St Paul’s Girls’ School Classics Society. Tea and cake will be served from 4.00 in the Dining Hall and the talk will be held in the Old Library. The event will finish between 5.30 and 6.00. There is no charge.
