We are delighted to announce “Rome and Hollywood”, a talk by Professor Stephen Harrison
on Friday 31st January 6-7pm
at the East Oxford Community Classics Centre
This talk considers why Hollywood cinema was interested in Roman themes; one answer is the violence and spectacle associated with the Roman Empire. It looks in particular at Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film Spartacus, showing how it was influenced by contemporary features such as the Cold War and Civil Rights Movement, and how it in turn influenced Ridley Scott’s 2000 film Gladiator.
The talk will last for about 30 minutes and will be followed by questions and drinks.
