Saxa Loquuntur (‘The Stones Are Talking’)

‘In our lives we are constantly surrounded by inscriptions – by writing in the public sphere.  Whether or not we decide to take up these offers to communicate with others through lettered objects, at the very least we are aware of their existence:  the presence of an interface through which worlds present and past are trying to interact with us.  Based on the collection of St Albans Cathedral, this study day will offer an opportunity to embark on an intellectual journey that will explore the voices, concerns, and desires of past generations through Latin (and English) inscriptions, in hands-on, practical, and in theoretical terms, bringing back to life the voices of those who inhabited this world before us.’
