Supporting Classics Teaching at Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 in Birmingham and the West Midlands

9 June 2018 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

A Classics for All event…

Supporting Classics Teaching at Key Stages 3, 4, and 5

A free information session for headteachers, academy executives, heads of department, and any teachers from state schools in the region.

10am-2pm on Saturday 9th June at the University of Birmingham

This is an exciting time for Classics in schools, with the teaching of Ancient History, Classical Civilisation, and Latin in resurgence across the state sector. Join us in June to explore how the Birmingham and West Midlands Schools Classics Hub can support the development of Classics teaching in your school.

We will cover:

  • Ways to develop existing Classics provision;
  • How to get new courses up and running;
  • How to develop new provision: from after-school clubs to timetabled lessons;
  • How ancient languages can be introduced as part of English, MFL, or literacy lessons;
  • How Classics can be embedded across the curriculum, through History, English, Drama, RE, Science, PSHE, etc.;
  • How to access Classics for All funding and training opportunities;
  • How to access post-training support.

The hub works in partnership with Classics for All (CfA), a national charity whose funds are available to state schools to introduce or enhance Classics provision. CfA can support access to teacher training and the cost of cover, as well as CPD training and mentoring. With CfA support, non-specialists can quickly get additional subjects such as Latin up and running, whether as after-school enrichment clubs or on timetable across key stages 3, 4, and 5.

In addition to funds, schools can access support from the hub in terms of teacher mentoring and ongoing subject support, as well as student enrichment. The hub’s links to the University of Birmingham mean hub member schools have access to a wealth of Classics activities for students. These include guest lectures from prominent Classicists, subject knowledge enhancement lectures and workshops, exam preparation conferences, and extra-curricular enrichment, such as archaeology handling sessions.

If you would like any further information, or to register for the event, please email the Hub Co-ordinator, Polly Stoker:
