CA: Online CPD Day for Ancient History Teachers

Keynote lecture lined up from Tristan Hughes, host of the award-winning podcast, The Ancients.

The programme is as follows: 10-10:15: Welcome 10:15-10:45: Workshop 1 GCSE: ‘Oracy in the Period Studies’, Sarah Rix-Drummond, Reading School A Level: ‘Attic inscriptions and the dynamics of Athenian Imperialism’, Prof. Peter Liddel, University of Manchester Approaches to AH: ‘Ancient History in the KS3 History Curriculum’, Gem Adams, Allerton Grange School & Classics For All 10:45-11:15: Workshop 2 GCSE/A Level: ‘Essay Writing at GCSE and A Level’, Rob Taylor, St Paul’s School A Level: ‘Teaching A Level Ancient History in a fully comprehensive setting’, Emma Beetham, York College Approaches to AH: ‘Teaching Life in the Roman World at KS3′, Dr Jane Ainsworth, Leicester Classics Hub Manager, Classics For All 11:15-11:30: Break 11:30-12:15: Tristan Hughes: ‘history podcasting in the present digital age’ Host of the award winning podcast The Ancients and author of a book on Alexander the Great’s successors, Tristan will be joining us to discuss the myriad ways to create and share history content with people in today’s age across all different kinds of media; from social media, to YouTube, to podcasting, to documentaries, and how these fields are so closely intertwined. 12:15-13:00: Lunch 13:00-13:30: Workshop 3 GCSE: ‘Sources in the GCSE classroom’, Dr Abigail Graham, ICS A Level: ‘Sources to diversify the A Level Greek Period Study’, James Renshaw, Godolphin & Latymer School Approaches to AH: ‘Fascism: Ancient & Modern’, Anthony Smart, York St John University 13:30-14:00: Workshop 4 GCSE: ‘GCSE Ancient History in mixed ability settings’, Tara Atkinson, Nower Hill High School A Level: ‘Bums on seats: A session looking at some tried and tested strategies for maintaining strong student recruitment’, Peter Wright, Blackpool Sixth Form College Approaches to AH: ‘Ancient History in the AQA specifications’, Winstanley College 14:00-14:15: Break 14:15-15:15: OPTIONAL: GCSE and A Level Ancient History Exam Reform, The Classical Association & OCR Alex Orgee, OCR’s Subject Advisor for Classics, and the Classical Association’s Subject Advisory Team for Ancient History will discuss the future redevelopment of these specifications.
